I hope you like buggy driving and doing tricks on hoverboards, because There just isn't anything else to do in There..
You can spend real money buying a virtual shirt, though! |

Last I checked There was locked to a ridiculously low resolution, like 800x600 or something. YIKES!
And to build anything you have to sign up to become a developer and use an offline SDK. Good luck! _____________________

I made an interesting discovery concerning There.
Most of last weekend, my cable connection was malfunctioning (thanks Comcast! ). My only internet option was my slow, crappy AOL account, which even on a good day can squeak by at 28k. Since SL at glacial speeds is unplayable (yeah, I tried), I fired up my There beta account. If I'm not wrong, There is basically a streamed Macromedia Flash game. I was actually able to drive my buggy around the rather cartoonish island. There was a bit of lag, but There is playable on dial up.This is by NO means an endorsement of There. SL is still far superior. BTW, I blew a pile of therebucks on a new shirt! Now, my There av owns a buggy and an extra shirt! Wheeeeee! |

Maybe I should check this thing out. :-/ I wish SL had some sort of SDK so I could write scripted objects in the language of my choice, with no limits on codebase size or data storage. Even if it were only a few objects per account, it would be fantastic. _____________________

There is a flash game. No, really.
There is 0 distributed computing, and you need to teleport from place to place, but... The movements of the avatars are quite lifelike and fluid. We MUST get some of that into SL. Also, the graphics suck Janet Reno's whang. Really, that's how bad they are. The terrain is mush and the sky is a blue backdrop, but... Some of the regions are HUGE. If we could get a gigantic sim in SL (I mean a server with a massive hard drive) that has no build capabilities but would be made only to hold parties and hang out, that would be cool. The economy is corrupt and inflated, the exchange rate is rediculous, the avatars are 100% NOT customizable and look like as much mush as the ground, the interface looks like Windows XP which automaticly makes it stink, the people are stupid, not creative, underage, and I came across a few racisists who immediatly suspected me of being a gay jew because my name was Darwin and they made the connection with that bad word evolution. There is one of the century's worst, yet I predict that it will immediatly ding with the masses because it's easy to use. _____________________

On a semi-related note, Robin Williams does a hilarious bit on Richard Nixon talking to Henry Kissinger, in which he asks, "Henry, are you a Jewish homosexual?" You have to hear it in context - funny stuff - this thread just made me remember... It's found on the Robin Williams Live 2002 CD (and DVD, I think). =SV _____________________

I started playing There and SL at the same time about six months ago. Yesterday I logged back into There for the first time in a couple of months and very quickly got frustrated with all the things that drove me away in the first place, principally the insane cost of uploading or buying your own clothes. However much people have complained about the tax system in SL, we should all be grateful that the Lindens have never allowed us to buy Linden dollars with real currency.
But, like lots of people I do like the more natural way the avatars move, and the fact that you can actually see them breathe, which I'd love to see in SL. _____________________

I tried to convert two There players. Both of them got so far as to try the trail in SL for a day or two and went running back to There immediately. The first because he found a girlfriend in There, the second because she wasn't as interested in the "creative" side of SL -- building, etc. She just wanted to have a good time and it *is* easier to do that in There to a degree, if you can put up with the bigots (man Darwin, I didn't encounter anything like that when I played), fifteen year olds, and the high price of fun, not to mention the customer service can't hold a candle to the Lindens.
So I lost both my potential converts. Maybe next time I try to convert someone, Darwin, you can come and help me preach? . Zana |

Darwin, I have to tell you that I finally - after three months of waiting - got in there just last night and it sucked totally. I must have been annoying the hell out of everyone with my whining, but I think I scared up some new visits to SL.
The first thing I really hated was that just to change my frikkin eye colour from turd brown to blue was better than $2000. Then I tried to take off the stupid clothes in a suitably quiet region only to find that they'd sewn me into my underwear! I kept asking how to fly and why it was so expensive and their virtual nazi mobsters started flying out of the woodwork, so I wouldn't disturb the welcome party for my new class. There is someone named Virtual_Vikki who HAS to be their version of a Linden. She basically told me I could have a lot more fun if I got my mom to lend me her credit card...I want to do some tag team recruiting; I think by talking together about SL we can reel them in. I'm David_Cartier in there, too so drop me a line! I may be able to stand it for a few referrals... We need to schedule a group recruiting drive; poor suckers will never know what hit them!

Two words about There:
Chat Bubbles. Goodness, who in the hell thought of this idea? TSO and There both use this as the chat method. Look away from the screen for 20 seconds and you miss the whole conversation - and there's NO way to bring up a log of what was said. It's a chatting nightmare, and aside from driving a buggy or hoverboard, what else is there to do in There but chat? The mush graphics look cartoonish indeed, but they are supposed to. It makes the animation and other movements fluid, and it does a very good job of that. Unfortunately there is nothing interesting to see - just miles and miles of landscape dotted with a few bland, default houses here and there. Serious disappointment. And shirts alone are something like $8,000 in-game. Um, excuse me? No worries, you can always BUY more in-game money with your RL credit card. I'm rolling my eyes, here. -J _____________________

P.S. I'm all set to do a recruit drive. Anyone want to meet me in There Saturday morning, say 9am PDT?
