When was the last time you saw a griefer?

I mean, I know I'm always busy coding and don't get out much, but I can't remember the last time I saw one. It was probably last year. Here's a thought: As the world grows larger, griefing will become irrelevant - the proportion of asshats to normal people drastically decreases.

From: Eggy Lippmann <snip> As the world grows larger, griefing will become irrelevant - the proportion of asshats to normal people drastically decreases. hmmm... yes and no in SL, ratio of asshats to normal people = 1:50 in RL, ratio of asshats to normal people = 500000:1 i think that might explain the ratio of time i spend in SL compared to the time i spend in RL

well, never, as far as I know. I am still trying to figure out what a griefer is. I see them mentioned and referred to constantly, particularly here in the forums... but its all a bit conspiratorial, in my opinion. A group-think version of the boogey man for grown-ups, perhaps.

Somebody bothered me the other day in a sandbox, even after I asked him to go away.

I think it's been a while since there was a really bad griefer... Things have been pretty good a while. The last bad griefer I remember was Grimmy Moonflower, but that was some time ago.

Well, last one was a newbie with a rocket launcher harassing other newbies in Morris... months ago ?
There also was this naked guy in Goguen yesterday, but he was really just desperately looking for decent men's clothes in SL (and we know how hard it is to find'em).

This last week, I saw no less than 5 grievers to our sims. And the Lindens intervened in 2 or 3 of the situations.

I have had to ban 2 ppl in the last 2 days from our 8 sims for bombing. I also have passed thier names to a few other ppl i know. Maybe they should add a dialog - "Are you realy sure you want to screw up somebodies day with this" to all explosive devices.

I have to ask, do any of you handle griefers by yourselves? If you pay no attention to them, they sooner or later do go away as the attention that they want isn't given.

Depends on your definition. I would say Grimmy when he invaded Jarod's Tech Talk back in early 2004. He didn't stay long after I started chatting him up ha ha he just thought he knew how to make people feel all crawly inside ha ha amateur.
I take that back, we had a persistent smoke bomber in slate that belonged to one of those soldier groups. It was just after the aquaduct was damaged in Teal by that greifer who hardly ever logged in but wouldn't sell anybody his land. People who are never (I mean never) inworld but ignore IMs and retain empty (I mean empty) land for years, get some perverse pleasure from holding something away from people who want to make constructive use of it.
If you look back through the postings, the same people complain about griefers over and over again. They seem to attract them as though they have "Easy Target" in their title or something. But you can't foist responsibility on a victim. It would be unfair to blame their lifestyles for making them trouble magnets. Maybe it seems kinder to simple say that our reaction is critical. People can only grief me if I freak out and get defensive.
We had smoke bombs going off in Slate a few days ago. I had just identified the owner when a fellow resident informed me that several people had already reported the griefer and the Lindens had promised to deal with them but it would help if I reported them too. Instead, I IMd the two-day-old and told him that he was being reported by people and that he would be wise to use his bombs in Jessie or Rausch which are reserved for such things. Then I asked if he needed help finding and gettings to one of those sims.
He quickly informed me that he was, in fact, in Rausch and had bought and rezzed a bomber which began shooting smoke bombs across The Grid All Hail The Central Grid and that controlling it was beyond his current knowledge. He'd immediately contacted Live Help and a Linden was already there "deactivating" the thing. He apologized and offered to come clean up. It turned out to be the childish knee jerk reporters who griefed him by ARing without even trying to investigate.

I abuse reported a guy at one of the Relay For Life events who was flying around shooting everybody and everything in sight with some sort of pushgun. It amazed me that someone felt the need to try to disrupt something like that.

Hehe - say I started a thread like this:
"LSL Works Perfectly!"
And go on to say.... I don't code much, but the last time I saw a flaw in LSL was last year....
Kinda the same thing. Griefers feed off attention - and as such, tend to gravitate where crowds of people are. If you don't hang around crowds much, its not surprising that you're not seeing grief yourself. Doesn't mean it doesn't exist, however - quite the contrary.
To answer the question - the last time I had a major grief incident was last week.

Yesterday. Bunch of 'Moral Majority' types entering people's property and rezing plywood boxes around people's poseball/cubes... Strangely they gave up on the border of my sim. But then my sims aren't set safe.

i usually run into them a few times a week. mostly in sandboxes, occasionally at events. they do seem to mostly be newbies. i try to ignore them, because, as travis said, they feed on attention. if they get too annoying, i just mute them to keep the temptation of talking to them at bay.

Was blown away a couple of weeks ago (three times, actually--couldn't stay long enough to actually sit down). I have also been blown up at my own event.
My experience with the "blow 'em to the next sim" kind of griefer is fairly limited. I am more familiar with the "grief via group membership" kind--my e-mail inbox is full of "xxx has been ejected from the xxx group."

Friday night. Somebody came to Midnight City with a rocket launcher that caused severe lag. Some visitors were forced to relog. Fortunately I had his handywork in my PvP report so I filed an abuse complaint against him.
I never fight back when this sort of thing happens since doing so would muddy the waters and make it difficult for a Linden to determine who was the actual the perp and who was the victim.
