frankly, i dont see what the big deal is with the ratings. what is the difference between telling a person that their creations/style/whatever is great in a simple IM, and giving them a rating? to me the only difference is that no one will be able to see the IM whereas giving a rating will be seen. I see complaints everywhere about how they cannot afford to give a 25L rating, well if thats the case then why not just tell the person that they are good and leave it like that?

:) That's about the most rational thing I've heard anyone say about this subject so far. Well said, Illy.

They're sucking us dry :)

But i prefer to stay optimistic....living from your stippend is no longer an option anymore.

You can try to keep your rates and stuff but it won't help , these days no one rates back.

I agree with you mina... and refuse to put another dime into second life i pay 85$ a month for my membership and land..i bought L$ once or twice.. no more i use to use my stripen money for shopping when my things wouldn't sell..now i hardly get a stripen

I agree Aces. Also Magnum is a nice guy. He has been nothing but cool to me and most people. If he wants to express his opinions let him. Im rather ticked some of my ratings will wither. Lukas my partner Id rate over a hundred times but once is enough, people who made Sl enjoyable for me I also dislike loosing those rates as well. Just because time has past doesn't mean you still don't feel the same way, if not stronger about someone. To simply ditch them along with some ones with less meaning seems cruel.

Agreed... sounds like a great reason to look them up and reconnect so you can express your feelings to them again :)

Rating Relative Strangers and the $25
02-18-2005 14:58
For me, the thing that saddens me about the $25 ratings is not rating friends (they don't need a rating to know how I feel about them; I try hard to be a good friend) but the rating deserving relative strangers aspect. Because one had one's behaviour noticed and rewarded ingame in a palpable way through ratings, I think I was more conscious of my behaviour. I would give people positive feedback more freely for beautiful builds or saying excuse me if they landed on my head at a telehub. I noticed that I was not doing that so much anymore and made an effort to begin again when I can afford to. I think positive rewards for good behaviour are an important thing. The thing is, I can't afford to as often any more. If they had gone up to $5 instead of $25, I think we would have seen less rate gaming and still have gotten to keep the positive reinforcement for good behaviour that ratings were for many and continue to be (on a much much much less frequent basis) by others. But, what I give out, I am not getting back (not that I expect one for one, that would be gaming) but am not even getting back the occasional IM to say, thanks for the rate from the builders I rate. So I may go to a system by which I only rate people if they are online. At least then, I know the person still plays and that I am not needlessly rating someone who won't even get the positive reinforcement for the good behaviour. Is there anyone else out there who is still rating? AND is there anyone else who thinks Lindens should consider a $5 or $10 rating fee rather than $25?

Positive rewards for good behaviorr is a good thing. You're right. But under the L$1 rating system, I don't think that's what the ratings meant at all. I was triple pos rated numerous times by complete strangers who I'd never spoken (or typed) a word to, and who had never seen anything I'd built or created. My builds are fair-to-decent, my behaviour is often atrocious and a good cause for flogging, and my appearance/clothing is usually the one thing I think I deserve a rating for. That's not at all reflected in my ratings.

I still rate those I find deserving. Building ratings I will actually start to pay attention to in about 5 months time. Up until then, someone's total ratings only show how social they are to me.

well ive been away for 3 mouth to see most of my rating gone whats next are they going to get rid of stipends as well why not make everything free in the game

PS. i just red the Announcements i can understand why they did it but there is realy no point to rating now. id rather just give the person 25L$ then rate then and negativly rating people does nothing to them now if its only for 6 mouths. why not just get rid of rating people all together.
