And again I raise the objection that a popularity contest will almost always select the items that everyone can agree on and detest the least, and not necessarily the best, most exciting, most interesting and controversial thing, or the one that pushes the envelope the most. Porridge, in other words, not too hot and not too cold.
The good thing about an individual arbitrary and personal selective process is that occasionally something very worthwhile will show up that might never have been selected by popular consensus.

Yus, and after it's selected in this way, it might very well become popular as a result of word spreading around. So, best of both worlds. Popular eclecticism, yay!

I agree with you, more or less, but the reason this became an issue in the first place was perceived unfairness, which I think will be an issue with any kind of voting panel type solution. I was fine with it the way it was, personally. This just seems like a happy medium, and it would literaly be the top pics

Yeah, I know. I'm jousting at windmills. I'd just rather see a way of selection that isn't bent so much by a creator's personal popularity, and may have little to do with the creation itself.

Top Picks Replaced by "Featured"
01-10-2005 22:23
We're going to experiment with something new. Instead of just eliminating Top Picks entirely, we're going to auction 20 slots to SL creators who want to showcase an object, a script, a place or any other creation for a two week period. The slots will be auctioned on eBay. For more information, and a link to the first auction, please check http://secondlife.com/community/featured.php.

This really is totally screwed. So - they won't be the top picks - they will be the owners with the biggest wallets.
What the hell is going on?
