Top Picks abuse

If the top picks list is to be changed to add new people to it, the whole list needs to be changed. Everytime new places have been added, there are still locations up that have been there since I first started SL. It is not fair to those who get bumped off the list while there are locations that have never gotten changed.

This is what I am sending in to the Lindens, by whatever means I can. This is what I think, do you agree? Do you disagree? Why?

I think there needs to be better rotation of the picks. There are so many great builds that are overlooked, such as Cave Rua (Rua 101, 20) which is an incredible underwater reef that is beautiful. If the Linden staff is too busy to seek out new builds for consideration then a better system should be established such as selection by member nomination. There could also be a team of SL member volunteers who research and submit builds for inclusion on the top picks list. Also, I think once a build is featured it should be ineligible for inclusion for a period of time after in order to give other builds a chance to be included. I suspect the Lindens who make the top picks selections choose the same builds over and over and over because they are too busy or disinterested to do otherwise.

The top picks system should be revamped or eliminated.

it's not supposed to be fair. there's nothing to be fair about. it's the lindens' top picks for the week. they can keep the same list up for eighteen weeks if it fries their turkey.

you have picks in your profile that let you recommend places you like. do you rotate all of them off and new ones on every week? month?

I completely agree!

There are several things we could do to improve the situation:

Changing the rate at which people can be selected as winners. For example, Cristiano suggested making current winners ineligible for the following contest, so there were never repeats from contest to contest.

Using multiple criteria for selecting winners. For instance there are a lot of players who provide goods, services, and contributions that can't be measured with dwell. How about an innovators award for experimental groups, items, services, or games? Perhaps an award for positive forum contributions? If it must be based on visitation, how about awards for the most unique people who visit a site in a given period of time?

Personally, I'd like to see the prizes spread over a much wider group of individuals. The prizes should be surprise incentives rather than expected subsidies.

It's not a popularity contest. The purpose of top picks is to direct new users, which does suggest some degree of objectivity and requires use of criteria other than the current system. Subjective choice of a member's preference can be readily distinguished from the top picks purpose.

yep.. yep.. yep...

And people seek out my profile just to check what I think are "top picks" for the week.. right? Of course they do.

Seriously Khamon.. you have to do better than that if you want to be taken seriously in this thread... while you are technically correct, you really seem to be ignoring the fact that the list seems to be stagnant...or blatantly irregularly updated. Nothing personal, but do you honestly believe that this list is any sort of priiority for them to update? If it is then you are correct. Don't you think, really, that it is more likely that they just don't update it? If that is the case, then oldtimers/people on the list do get an "unfair" boost to their dwell/visits by dint of the Top Picks being built into the Find/Events lists....

Then again... why should you care? You/your friends coud be benefitting from it - though I haven't looked at the top picks list in three months, so you/your friends may not be on it....

This is not an attack on Khamon.. though it will almost certainly be read as one... I have a bet with some one on that already.

Would you prefer spontaneous or canned laughter? You do remember laughter right?

i'm not ignoring this fact at all. i've never seen the stated purpose or criteria for this list so i really don't know what i'm talking about here. [queue laughter] are y'all arguing that it's being mishandled based on a system that you made up off the top of your heads? or do i just not know where to look for the formal verbiage?

i don't remember ever looking at it myself. i'm sure i have once or twice. do newbies use it for more than a day or two? if i were a linden and felt attacked about how we handled it, no pun intended, my attitude would be "fine, we'll take it out of the ui for next update."

come to think of it, somebody told me that the aids memorial quilt was on the top picks the week it was out. does that qualify as an update? i wonder if it's still on there?

The top picks is updated when a Linden gets a turn to add whatever place they like to the list. Technically there is no system, or guideline to the Top Picks being updated.

Alot more people than newbys use the list. I use it myself to see someof the builds LL feels should be on the list, and many times, the builds are very good, and yes they deserve to be there. Initially I think the Top Picks list was built for new players to look around and this was LL's way of pointing them to places of interest. Today however, you have the Linden Top Picks and the Popular Places, which makes the Top Picks just another free advertising place for your store or build. This is where the issue of fairness comes into play. Many players build things for entertainment value, and they would like people to come see, making money or not. Stores are listed in the Top Picks as well, and many of the ones in it now, have been there since I have started. As opposed to having the the Top Picks be used as a free advertising (for months on end) tool, Why not cycle both interesting builds and shops so everyone gets thier fair share of both new player, and old player traffic based on LL's picks.

Yes, that does qualify as an update, however the quilt was in the top pics long after it was taken down. This is another reason the Top Picks should be updated frequently, and in a cycling manner. The quilt is not the only build to be listed long after it's prime.

Actually. from you.. I would prefer silence.. so I can retain at least a miniscule amount of respect for you.

Since I don't know all of his friends or his alts, my statement makes sense. Yours, however, is empty of anything meaningful.

Complaint: The top picks system lacks standards, lacks rules for inclusion and duration

Criticism of complaint: Why complain about top picks system since it has no standards or rules for inclusion or duration....

Ale Bukowski, Tabu' - The Pirate Hideaway, Varney (187, 100)
Listed since release

So right now we have 7 stores, 4 fun places, 2 relax places, and 1 learning place.

Now, why are so many stores listed for new players to go see? This is nothing but free advertising. Why is the LSL Library not on the list?

What I think should be done is equal out the numbers, there are 14 slots and 4 categorys listed currently. So, why not 4,4,3,3? Stores should definitely be rotated out more frequently because of the free advertising part of it. Linden builds should be listed somewhere else. Luna Mall, Rizal, Oak Grove, etc, these are all places that are helpful, and new players could learn alot from them.

I think it would be fair if possibly every month the list changed, and on the next month, there are 14 different places to go explore. This would give us all something to make use of besides new players, I would love to go explore and see what there is out there. So, as opposed to keeping this as free advertisement, why not make this a tool to go explore builds, a few stores, fun places, scenery builds, etc. We need fresh and new listings!

Why the presumption that it should be fair at all? That it doesn't change often is a bummer, but as far as priorities go I can't say that it should be at the top of the LL list.

And I do look at other's picks, but I'm weird.

Great suggestions Ulrika! But I think you are talking about the current Dwell Awards. Vade in this thread is speaking of the Top Picks list that is in the find menu. Those Top Picks are picked weekly by the Lindens. Sometimes some of the listings change, but some listings remain. Some picks have been there since this feature was put in. So that's what everyone here is discussing. Just a heads up! :)

In my opinion, it's a list of builds in which a Linden alt is involved... no more, no less.
