I for one wanted to login today and tomorrow. However I am not pissed, mad or sour at LL or SL. I found other stuff to do. It's not the end of the world.
However speaking with a couple Lindens and seeing their posts, they seem to be pretty bumbed. Think about it, they spent the whole day blitzing and trying to fix what went wrong, simply to have pretty much everything backfire!
Being an older SL player, I know when LL needs a "Hey we still love you guys!", "We know you are doing your best you can to get us back in there!" and a "Hang in there!".
I want to shout out all the LL employees "I for one am still behind you guys and I know that you have a whole community anxious to get back in there. I'm sure that all the other residents out there know that LL is doing the best they can! For this I am gratefull and i'm giving you all (LL and the residents) a tap the back to "hang in there" and there IS light at the end of this tunnel!"

You can support someone and say "keep trying," but you can still be upset with them for not being prepared.
I support the Lindens but hope they learn from this. They should have duplicates of every major piece of hardware ON HAND. We had two of everything when I worked at the Dana Corporation. In packaging, waiting to be used.

I've been tempted to respond a hundred times to the negative posts, but I've held my tongue. Your post is exactly what I should have said, all along. I know how a plan can go awry, and I am more than willing to patiently wait for the grid to be fixed. I'm using this opportunity to write a couple of old RL friends whom I haven't spoken with in a long while. I'm also planning more carefully my next build, so that I don't squander my time once I get in world.
Here's a hearty Good Luck to the Lindens. You aren't nearly evil enough to deserve all of the vitriol that people have been spewing. Save that for your cable companies!

And you know I bet the poor Lindens thought they were going to get home early today!! Going to be a LONG sucky new years for them tomorrow I bet. *HUGS* Lindens. Hang in there! PS: I agree people have a right to be upset. But I also know the Lindens need *some* encouragment right now. Else they could just throw up their hands and let us rot.

I like the way the Lindens' apologise when it goes wrong - many companies wouldn't be as honest.
I'm sure it is complicated - if it was simple it wouldn't take six hours..

actually i spent half the half the day putting everything back the way it was when it worked because it HAS to work monday morning without a hitch. people can be so impatient.

Anyone ever heard of kissing ass Think they'll even do a damn thing for us SL customers ... why not a chance .. just an apology is good nuff for them. Someone posted GO OUTSIDE ... LOL I'm sunburnt from yard work came inside to play some SL with aloe vera on me and a fan cooling me off why would i go outside after dark anyhow ? what would the neighbors think ... well that idiot next door is standing outside in the dark... Oh well I'll give the Lindens something alright a canceled subscription after all it is my option right ? I tried to log on BTW for the last three hrs with no success ... played a bit of some other games and just wishing i could get back to see what my account looks like I shudder at the horror stories of lost inventory. That'll only happen once to me and if not resolved by LL then ... you know.........

Cost...
12-30-2004 23:00
Aaron - With 100+ machines, having 2 of everything would be WAAAY too expensive, especially for a small operation like LL. I'm sure they try to be prepared - and you can bet yer butt that there will be some serious company discussions as a result of this, on future preparedness and such (at least their should be; and have in my experience at companies I've worked at in this situation). Am I happy? No, I'm an enthusiastic newbie with lots to see and do, having just found Yadni's Junkyard.... But am I sympathetic to LL right now? Oh hell, yes! People complain about taking a day off work to play SL and not able to.... How about the LL people who were on vacation who had to COME BACK to work to try to fix the problem? Uuuuugh, no thanks! So here's what I do - keep a wary eye on them, so they don't think their customers are lax (fat chance of that, with all the whiners on the board); but encourage them at the same time, let 'em feel the love now and then. Hopefully it'll inspire them to keep plugging away at things instead of feeling like its not worth the trouble. Take care, --Noel "HB" Wade (Tread Whiplash)

Damn right it needed to be said.
I agree with some folks, namely Schwan, that there are some long term issues that need to be resolved, however, flooding the forums with selfish, whining threads and posts, most of which are speculative and some of which are downright insulting to the Lindens is really bad form.
Put yourselves in their shoes. They have been working feverishly to fix it while people sit here and speculate, whine and point fingers. I don't know about you, but that would really bum me out. It's the day before New Years and a lot of them will likely forego sleep tonite for US. that means maybe having to sacrifice New Years festivities. If you have one ounce of Holiday spirit left in you, give them a break and go watch a movie, play another online game or maybe an offline one, spend some quality holiday time with friends and family or what have you. You're really just adding to the problem if you choose to go off the deep end of negativity.
Come on people, get a grip.
Thanks Nexus for posting this, and thanks LL for doing your best.

Reminds me...

Nolan -
Well put! When I was at Sierra / WON.net, we licensed our Multiplayer Tech. to Raven Software for "Soldier of Fortune". They mis-used it, and caused players to get booted every 5 minutes. The people on the forums went BALLISTIC and blamed us, even though it was the way the system was implemented, not a problem with our actual product... Took 6 months to get resolved, due to legal wrangling and such between companies. They ended up going with a competitor's product in the end - was a HUGE morale hit to our coding department. All over a simple "STATIC" C++ declaration.
I don't want to be mistaken for an ass-kisser - but as an industry vet, I WILL say that a little encouragement goes a long way... Forums for all online products tend to be negative more often than not, and it can wear on people.
Take care,

I play because I choose to play and I pay for the useage of the game ... at this time I cannot play the game for wich I pay for ... so yes I'm not happy if you like downtime I'll rent you a game its called guess when you can log in .... its very inexpensive and if you guess the correct time to play ... well you get to play the game your paying for Whining and selfish yes i am damn straight. Insulting I might be but then again its an insult to me to pay for something that I can't play. Ever had a new car and had to leave it in the shop ? Just a suggestion wich will never happen how about LL doing something for us since we've had to put up with this ? An apology doesn't help time lost and money spent for a game i can't play.

Whatever works for you man. To answer your question, I have owned new cars that had problems. I had to wait til they were fixed. Oh well, such is life. I didn't go to the dealer and rant and rave, and a new car is a lot more serious to me than a virtual world. You catch more flies with honey than vinegar as the saying goes. I guess it's all about perspective and where you're coming from. I was raised in an environment such that it was accepted that Murphy's law is alive and well and that winding yourself up over things that are beyond your control is not productive.

Thanks Nexus for posting this, and thanks LL for doing your best. Hear Hear! I work as a network tech, so I know the Evil of modern computing technology. I feel sad for the poor tech who is trying to make something out of nothing, with Philip (with paying customers pushing Him) on your back. I'm with ya. I've been there. But be prepared next time, and have a backup server to take over ready, willing and able. I mean, you guys have millions to throw around now. These aren't crays. That said, with the hardware you have to work with, and the scope of your mission, you are doing a fantastic job. Gooooooooooo Lindens!

Nolan - Good point about worrying not solving things! And a new car is a HELL of a lot more expensive than SL, even at top-tier! Really, from the reaction on the forums, I'm thinking about buying and sending people Blood-Thinners - I'm worried that one or more are going to have an Aneurism / Stroke! Nolan you've obviously never worked at a dealership... well I have and yes a new car is more expensive but try telling that to someone who's paying a few hundred for an island per month. New cars aren't always that expensive BTW
