Doesn't this make Americans and Britons feel angry and betrayed? Where is the outrage? Where are the calls for resignation? Where, at the very least, is some pressure for Bush and Blair to take reposibility for making a mistake? Or perhaps some consider Blair's smarmy comment,
"I acknowledge that and accept it," he said. "I simply point out, such evidence was agreed by the whole international community, not least because Saddam had used such weapons against his own people and neighboring countries. "And the problem is I can apologize for the information that turned out to be wrong, but I can't, sincerely at least, apologize for removing Saddam. "The world is a better place with Saddam in prison not in power." to be apology enough. Yes, the world knew that Saddam had WMD prior to 1991 and had used them but the world continued to do business as usual with him until the invasion of Kuwait, dramatically illustrated by the photo of Rumsfield and Saddam smiling and shaking hands shortly after the gassing of the Kurds. There was no international consensus that Saddam had WMD at the time that Bush the second decided it would be a nice day to invade, in fact the UN weapons inpectors insisted that they had no evidence of a WMD program. Yes, Saddam was a bad guy, but there are many brutal dictators in this world quite afew of which are propped up by Western powers including America and Britain. The justifications put forward for this war were lies, plain and simple. |

WMD was a pre-text for regime change. I don't think any of us ever really believed that WMD was the real justification for war. Yeah, that apology by Mr. Blair is kind of weak, but I'm actually kind of surprised how openly they are acknowledging the lack of WMD.

Regardless of whether it was the real reason for war, it was the reason that was given to congress and the American people to get us over there in the first place.

And now... the rest of the story...
From your linky in the middle of the story: The report found that Iraq worked hard to cheat on United Nations-imposed sanctions and retain the capability to resume production of weapons of mass destruction at some time in the future. "[Saddam] wanted to end sanctions while preserving the capability to reconstitute his weapons of mass destruction when sanctions were lifted," a summary of the report said. _____________________

Billy, if the UN told us we had to dismantle all of our WMD and submit to sanctions do you think we'd comply? Do you think we wouldn't cheat and do everything we could to work around them? Do you know how many UN resolutions Israel is currently in violation of?

I love Clinton, but if going after him is what it takes to get rid of Bush, i'm all for it. Heck, let's not stop with the Clinton administration. I was actually thinking of the Reagan administration. BTW, many Reagan cronies still make up a sizable footprint of the Washington elite. _____________________

I hate this whole war. That news just makes me sad. I hate how I feel powerless against this. I hate how everyone who takes a clear stance against Bush is seen as unpatriotic. I really liked Howard Dean and I liked how he yelled a lot and I would have voted for him. Would have been nice seeing him in debate with Bush, no?

I hate how I feel powerless against this. Lady, I'm sorry to tell you democracy doesn't work. It's a system that is controllable by those with money and power, so it's the system that is preferable. The 'people' are kept happy with some token laws which do make life generally better, but those in power are able to do what they *really* want when they want. My advice? Get your head down and lead the best life you can till you die. God sees the truth that we are not actually able to influence events on this world. He will judge George Bush in one line and you in quite another. Just live the happiest fullest life you can till you die. Don't worry about those who control us, whatever form they take... Sadam... George Bush... |

Just remember, if you ever become President, you can't be punished or reprimanded for giving false reasons for going to war, but you can be impeached for lying about having sex.

Bush could not be impeached for going to war? Who says so? Impeachment is the bringing of charges... no one brought any. He acted within the law --- until such charges are brought and the impeachment process is completed... That is the lesson of the Clinton impeachment. Sometimes, hero, it would behoove you to remember the old saw, "Better to keep one's mouth shut and be thought a fool than to open it and remove all doubt." YMMV |

Riiiiiight.. Bush could not be impeached for going to war? Who says so? *grins* it was meant to be ironic and humorous. Of course he could be, but my comment was a statement as to the state of mind of our nation to its priorities. Impeachment is the bringing of charges... no one brought any. Close. Impeachment is the accepting of charges by a vote. Splitting hairs, here, though. He acted within the law --- until such charges are brought and the impeachment process is completed... That is the lesson of the Clinton impeachment. *thinks* There's really two schools of thought on the application of law. In one sense, you're correct. In another train of thought - whether or not you are caught / convicted of a crime, this does not mean you did not commit a crime. Sometimes, hero, it would behoove you to remember the old saw, "Better to keep one's mouth shut and be thought a fool than to open it and remove all doubt." YMMV My statement was supposed to be a joke, so, this doesn't apply. ![]() _____________________

Too bad France isn't oil-rich. I'd like to take back my ancestoral homeland. And french women..yummy...
I'm sure that Bush could be brought up on charges for several crimes. Unfortunately "they" presently control all branches of the government and most corporate-owned media outlets, making it highly unlikely. In fact, he could probably commit murder on national tv and they would spin it and drag it out until he walked away, rich and fat and giggling.. _____________________
