Ok..Correct me if I am wrong in this and once I get enough money together I am going to start it myself.
#1 a Sim is 1kilometer by 1 kilometer. That is 1000 meters by 1000 meters #2 Land costs are variable but approximatly $48 for a 10 meter x 10 meter block.
That means there are 100 x 100 simple tracts of land in One Sim @ Approx $48 a Tract that is $480,000 Linden dollars to buy up a Sim.
Soooooo if you got enough people together and divided out the tracts or pooled all the money together in essence when a Sim came open a person could ...could buy it up in one gulp. This would be the way to create the Futureistic city you were talking about earlier. Unfortunately you would have to buy the bad land with the good in order to keep it the way you wanted it originaly.
Sorry Cat, I aint tearing down the castle Right now I have the perfect seat of land for it so nope its not going...LOL

$48 * 4096 land plots (256m * 256m, 64 land squares per side = 4096 land plots) = $196,608 LD
The trick is running in and buying it all quick enough. Charlie Omega did this with most of a sim pretty recently.

How about the occasional new sim being under the control of a "zoning board" who approve new purchases? This could be a less formal version of the "Projects" system. Instead of individuals volunteering to implement a portion of a fixed plan, they would just have to agree to the guidelines of the sim and have a vague idea of what they'll be building with their purchase. The zoning board could be made up in advance of the sim appearing, picked from volunteers with a similar vision (e.g., "Futuristic" or "Medieval Fantasy" and allocated the land by the Lindens to resell to compliant builders. Btw, I'd like to see a "space" zone, only reachable by vehicle (or subsequent teleporting), with structures similar to some of the underwater buildings and everyone in permanent "fly" mode.

I completely agree with Ope Rand. What annoyed me with Second Life, and what annoyed me with previous "games" of the same kind, was the anarchy, the lack of structure. It currently looks more like a child's room's floor of toys than an advanced three dimensional online world.
I also completely agree with there being two sides of Second Life. - The first is the want to be completely creative, to create *anything* that you can imagine. - The second is the want for an online society, a place for people to *live*.
I'm completely new to Second Life, but the obvious idea that springs to my mind is this: Dividing the Second Life world into two; - One half that is like it is now, with a sort of anarchy. - Another half with rules and regulations like the ones of the real world. No teleportation, no flying. A sort of government (even though it could consist of users, not linden employees) to create an infrastructure. Perhaps even the need for resources (I liked that idea)
The second half could also be divided into "themes", of course. Fantasy, real-life, science fiction.
As a project, this could be started by just applying the above rules for the "second half" into a single Sim. It would be very, very interesting.

With certain modifications, I really like your idea, there are some people that hate the confines of the RL, and some that would love to recreate them and improve them perhaps.
Though I think it is a major mistake to say no fly or teleportation, while they are unrealistic forms of transportation and I would love to see other forms develop. Sl days are much shorter and none of us have the Real Time to walk around the huge land tracts of SL. I mean realistically we would be limited to hanging out in one or two sims which would be no fun.
Though remember how expensive teleporting can get and how slow flying tranportation is..... There are airships now, i can see a future for airlines in SL.

JV What modifications do you suggest? Perhaps in the Real World Like worlds, time would move more slowly/realisticly? Walk? Hmph, do you walk to work? Subway! Hm, is it possible to make underground tunnels in SL? Is it just me or does anyone else actually like the idea of going by subway to work *in a game*? Perhaps I'm just too much of an escapist...

I actually do like the idea, and I think it could be very cool. We were thinking about possible subways in Americana and but I think we decided not to go for it finally, we didn't want to deal with the lag issues that would come with it. You said that the 2nd half that would be real world would be no fly no teleportation. You also said there could be themes like medieval or sci fi... Just a guess but I don't think they had subways in medieval times So for a city or a total real world sim, we could do the subway thing but for different themes it wouldn't work. You then mentioned that we could maybe have the time go more realistically in the real world area, but that doesn't resolve the fact that I don't have time to walk 3 hours to get to an event Though its dwindling every day I play SL, I DO HAVE A RL. I have many thoughts on gov's and will be posting them soon in the feature suggestions... I like your idea though in the fact that it will please those that hate the idea of Gov's, they can leave us alone that want them and not have to fight us. They can sit in their anarchy and enjoy watching us fail, but I bet some gov. will suprise them and succeed. JV.
