Serious Question.

I have never really smoked. I must admit I did light up a few while in the Army, but unlike W.J.C., I really did not inhale, well maybe once, but I got sick.

My question to smokers is, why is smoking such a powerful addiction? I mean, booze and drugs alter your mind, caffeine speeds you up, but cigarettes?

Why do you smoke?

I think I started because everyone in my family smoked.

But I believe that it is hard to kick for me because I used it almost exclusively as a means to break away in order to think. This could be in the middle of a conversation or in the middle of work sitting in front of my computer terminal or even in the middle of house work.

It was in fact the worst part of quiting for me. I could no longer figure out a way to break away from what I was doing and take "5".

I also read that they did a study on people and inhaled nicotine increased brain function on a temporary basis. People were given a problem, they solved the problem faster after they smoked than before.

I've always been a person who preferes the "side lines". I am never in the middle of a crowd (I hate crowds). Smoking also ensured this. I also like a lot of personal space, smoking also ensured this. I remember frequently lighting up when a person moved in to close to my personal space and this would always back them up a foot or so. :D

I have heard that smoking is anti-social behaviour and I probably concur with this. I'm definately not the most huggy wuggy person in the world. I'm a lot more comfortable around animals than people and interestingly enough, didn't smoke much when around animals.

For whatever that's worth.

The question of why people ever start and persist long enough to get addicted is a good one. For me it was simple rebellion. I had a reputation as the quiet dorky bookish guy and I wanted to be the cool mysterious loner guy instead, hehe.

Why people keep smoking after they're addicted is pretty easy. Withdrawl sucks! If I go more than a couple of hours without a smoke I start to feel intense anxiety, light headedness, and my throat feels like it's constricting. It's a whole lot of not fun.

Maybe this is may not be the place to ask, but I have noticed that in the US there are alot more smokers in rural america then there is in the city. I have always wondered why that is. Also I notice that here in Mexico alot of young kids smoke. It really bothers me because I feel smoking (cigarrettes) is a very nasty habit and obviously very bad for ones health, but that is just my opinion. Btw, cigarrettes are extremely cheap in Mexico...Marlboro's $1.80.... ;)

Oh yes and good luck to those that are seriously trying to quit. I mean that with the bottom of my heart. I personally have quit drinking the devil's juice (alcohol). It is also a bad habit and extremely bad for my health. :o
