From: Chip Midnight Assign them randomly. Let it be luck of the draw. numerous community complaints about this is what prompted them to initiate the pool assignments.

If we've all had good servers or bad ones at various times then no one is more entitled to the best servers than anyone else. So have one last random assigment. There's no way to fairly pick who most deserves to get shafted because no one does, so LL shouldn't single out a certain group. Random is the only fair way. Everyone had an equal chance to get the best or the worst. After that we live with it.

Now it's random. If I get that "one last lotto" then I'm basically getting the chance to be shafted even worse. I'd MUCH rather have my old sim back, or one just like it. The proposed system will give me one just like it, or even better. And I like those odds.

Only the hyperthreaded and new Opteron servers have given significant increase in sim performance, allow new and exciting forms of content to be delivered. The old machines simply don't deliver in the SL 1.5.x world.
Opterons? Damn. I am interested if the Lindens would elaborate on the current classes of sims. Last I heard they were using P4 2.8's, but that was from Philip at a late spring/early summer townhall. Obviously hardware has changed since then, but do the Lindens really need 64-bit servers? I mean, if the old stuff are P4 2.26, and the new stuff is whatever-speed 64-bit Opterons, then yeah, make it all 32 or make it all 64. Or hope and pray that by the time SL's server infrastructure requires 64 they've phased out the Pentiums. |
