Remember when:
Shopping in SL meant Avatar Central, Skees, Fey's and Frankie Beach?
Dancing meant Marilyn Murphy?
Events meant Baccara and Fey?
Teleport meant no massive particle poofs?
Liasons meant green spider man Jeff, little Michael, Lee and Char?
Do you miss that smaller world?

That was before my time katyk, and I'm sure it was a unique experience. I have an ongoing interest in the history of SL - the interesting events, who all was involved and when. Still lots of untold stories waiting to be heard.. For those who missed 'em, here are a few threads about the people from earlier times. Do you miss that smaller world? I once bought a table and chairs from Avatar Central in Natoma. When I went to place the table, I tried to use the Z coordinates to place it just right. I entered the coordinate, hit enter and I either sent it deep underground, or into geostationary orbit. Either way, I wonder if its still there? The first time I met Micheal Linden, he was a big scary looking guy with a bat. I wish I'd taken a picture. Having a smaller world meant that we saw each other more frequently. I used to see the same people all the time at the few events we had per day. After 1.2, we all drifted apart. SL went from being a small town to a diverse, much larger world.

A new store opening was a major social event and everyone would show up. There was no TRINGO, and no BINGO. WHAT DID WE DO THEN! Show and tell was always fun.

Tringo? Bingo? When I started SL, all we had were cubes.

And to get to Avatar Central we had to walk...ten miles through 6 foot deep snow...up hill...both ways.

From: Siobhan Taylor Did it ever? Certainly not at the time you're suggesting... Yes, though you are right - it was during beta/early SL, not that far into things (Dec 2003). Marilyn Murphy was the very first person I ever saw do a dance routine in SL, which was pretty creative considering we did not have custom animations or streaming music then. She will always be synonymous in my mind with clubs and dancing, she took it quite seriously and was a complete pro. There Marilyn, now please stop hitting me.

Do you miss that smaller world? When Slate was at the edge of the world, and remote? When private islands didn't exist? When show&tell and No Host Chats and trivia were the events du jour? When Liasons made hourly announcements for events? When new sims going online were rare, and if they did go online, did so maybe 5-6 at a time? When public land was everywhere? When people were wondering if real estate speculation would ever take off? When prim hogs were the main drama item? Those were the days, or something. LF

GOD do I miss those days!
I miss the lack of clubbage mostly. Back in those days, I knew EVERYONE. Not figuratively, either.
Back in those days, you could check "online", do a search with a blank box, and come up with less than 100 results.

i may not be an oldbie, but i'm a midbie amd remember much of the "old world".
i remember the forums from then too.. different colors, set-ups, etc.. plus, i knew almost every name here.. as well as what forum AV went with which name.
as far as in-world, i remember sitting on a plot of land in Purple. i was taking part in one of those (now) legendary Land Rushes! those really were different times.
..and as far as new sims, not only was it rare, but we got entire story lines to go with it. i miss the fun and mystique of those days. not to mention the closer-knit community.. well, maybe not closer, but smaller. there are still close-knit feelings, but now it's relegated to those who were here before the "There rush of '04".
of course, now there are so many new things to see.. i imagine we've probably seen the last of the "World Tours".. or at least in one shot. next time around it may be a several day excursion! lol...
then again, some day these times will be part of the second wave of "old times" and we'll laugh at how big we thought the world was now.
onward and forward though... always unearthing (unsimming?) the future we are making for ourselves.

when sulumor lived in olive
when lindens hosted demonstation events
when casino was synonymous with omega pad
when people designed and sold original inworld art
when the sl national park and cinde's zoo were in zoe
when everyone owned their own shoppe and handed out lms
when premium vehicles meant fairchang - this is still true i suppose

When we all lined up on the border of DeHaro and Boardman to watch the "Color Sims" get stitched to the mainland, then we all rushed in to grab the piece of land we wanted.

Avatar bodies hanging in the air awaiting the start of a land grab.
Flea had a nipple monopoly.
The jizzmaster spent a lot of time on foreheads.
People gathered in a crowd for lottery drawings.
and the pre prim limit builds ...WOW!

Teleport Tours. We used to be able to teleport right to a landmark, but it cost money. The price was distance based. Mentors would organize teleport theme tours and at the end, refund the teleport fees instead of giving prize money.
