Asset Server Failure..Losing Inventory!?!?

For the past week or so I have been losing inventory big time!

What happens most often is that I will remove an article of clothing and a short time later receive a gray pop up window stating the item was not saved due to an asset server failure. This has happened to other people on my sim as well.

We sent in numerous bug reports about this and no input from LL yet, or resolution. As recently as last night I lost more clothing.

Losing inventory is starting to become pretty expensive. I have lost my dance bracelet several times after teleporting and each time I had to buy the bracelet and all of the dances it contained again! This is a several thousand linden dollar loss each time it occurs. The other day I lost nephi clothing valued at more than 1000 linden.

The problem with losing objects after teleporting has been around for a while but the Asset server failure notification message is a new problem for me. Is anyone else experiencing asset server failure or is this just a problem associated with the Gypsy Moon server?

Whoah! Backup - rewind. If this is the case, is it safe to building/scripting new items right now? Lindens?

I'd hate to think that this is a holdover from when that one server failed... But just in case it is, IM a Linden that's online and let them know about the problem with your sim.

I have been experiencing the same problem - it has happened to me twice in the past couple of days, and both times I lost an inventory item. Thankfully they were minor things, but there is no excuse for this. It frightens me that the asset server problems seem to be getting worse - what is next, the deletion of entire builds and inventories? What will happen then?

BTW, Katy, I am not sure if you had any of my dances, but if you did, I would be happy to replace any that you lost.

*waves to katy*

Im sorry to hear that :(
I've been having similar issues. My flavor is landmarks though. It tries to upload them for about 15 mins, then says it cant store it to the asset server or some such.

Katy, I always do replacements in situations like this- just let me know what outfits you had dissapear, and I will send you new copies. :)

To post the other side on the issue, I've been working in a (mostly) empty sim a friend owns, and have not experienced any real problems relating to lost inventory. I think the one item I've lost was a notecard, and I was in a more bogged-down sim.

However.

I have a feeling that the asset system may be experiencing a small asset overflow bug, especially with avatars with several (hundred) prim attachments or the like. The reason I bring this up is, while working in the sim (and rezzing/deleting many, many prims in the process), I was wearing one of my more... excessive - avatars. Twice, I experienced my avatar wearing clothing with textures/attachment calls that were, indeed, not mine (for example, the eyes on the avatar mysteriously retextured themselves to a texture I do not own, and I had a "Skirt" appear on the avatar with some form of "thug" drawing on it). Since I create 99% of my own stuff, it wasn't some bug relating to the avatar itself with just some shaddy LSL. And for the record, it didn't show up in my avatar's files or appearance menu, so I bug reported it at the time.

That said, my advice to people affected or concerned is to keep a separate copy of your inventory item or, if you cannot and are concerned, don't put on clothing with, say, 100 different poses in one prim or several hundred prim attachments - or send inventory while in a very bogged down sim. I realize that sounds limiting to some - but it's all I can suggest until the problem is resolved.

And yes, an official statement would be nice.

I have had problems losing items that were left for me while I was not online. I saw a quick window to accept them and before I could do anything, it was gone and so were the items. This has happened in the last week and a half more than once.

In addition, I have created plants, done a take copy for my inventory after the creation and when I look in my inventory, the plant is not there. In one instance I did a take and the plant vanished completely and I had to re-create it.

I too have experienced the weird texture stuff. While creating a plant, my texture was on one side and some very, very strange texture mysteriously morphed onto the other side of the cube. Really strange.

I was modifying my appearance, and I got the asset server failure warning, and I logged out soon after. Next time I logged on, all my appearance settings were back to default (body size, thickness, eye shape etc)

Okay, here it goes:

Cyanide (I referred him) was at my place, and I was posting on the forums. He picked up my giant wooden fork ( I bought it and the accompanying spoon at a tag sale 8 months ago), and kept jabbing me with it. So, I snatched it away from him and said "Give me my fork, asshole >: (". He told me that should be my sig. So it is.

HAPPY NOW? >: (

somehow that story leaves me feeling empty inside. the mystery was more satisfying. :(

but that is pretty hilarious you have a giant wooden fork and spoon. do you hang them on the dining room wall next to the three plastic squirrels?

This is a major problem. The inventory loss I had a few weeks ago cost me well over $300,000L . These were items I had bought and made since I started in SL.

Another close friend quit SL because she lost all of her valued possessions. She was crushed.

This REALLY needs to be fixed ASAP.

How long can a virtual economy last if the items we are purchasing are not secure? Not too long.

Schwanson, you are kidding right? And the Lindens didn't restore this for you?

They were not able to.

After a bunch of bug reports, a lengthy post on the forums, letters to every person at LL, and several phone calls I did get a response. It took about 2 weeks until I got the real help I thought I deserved. Philip himself messaged a few times and put Phoenix on the job. After alot of work Phoenix was able to restore the names of my items....unfortunately any attempt to use those items results in a "item is missing from database error". So now not only is my inventory a total mess....its a mess of item names and not actual items.

In all fairness to Phoenix and LL....I stopped trying to resolve my issues with them regarding my inventory and have written it off. Logging in and having to work with a technician to restore my inventory resembled RL work too much. And we didn't seem to be getting anywhere. I was not having fun anymore. It was depressing. I do not regret this decission.

Irate as I was, I requested financial compensation from LL. It was explained to me that the value of the content of SL exceeds the RL worth of LL, they cannot afford to compensate you for lost inventory. While I was pissed at first, it makes sense to me now and I will deal with it.

I am fortunate to be surrounded by my good friends here in SL. After posting about my inventory loss my friends started to drop "oldbie" items on me to replace the fun crap that was missing. Special thanks to Stampshady who really went out of his way to put some fun back in my SL.

My issues are not the reason for my concern however. I will get over anything that happens to me here. There are many more fragile people here than myself, and something like this can really crush a person's spirit. I have seen this happen and it's not fun to watch.

LL does not need to worry about compensation for lost inventory, I agree. They need to make it so inventory does not get lost.

I have to admit I had my inventory corrupted on an old account about a year ago. And, unlike yourself (after getting no help getting it restored), I chucked it and closed the account. I came back about 6 months later thinking that by then they would have had this sorted out. Obviously not. So, while I regularly backup my scripts, the prims/permissions/texturing/script placement/prim naming are all at risk. And, some of my objects get pretty complex in those aspects.

So, anyhow, I guess the moral of the story is: don't develop anything here that takes more than a couple hours to recreate.

Thats exactly my point. If this becomes the general attitude nobody will create anything worth while, and nobody will spend any sum of money to purchase goods that may not be in their inventory tommorow.
