As nice as that would be its not accurate. The version before 1.1 was 1.0.14 I think or something like that. Its not a decimal system (how can it be, there are 2 decimals!) but rather just a subversion notation. We are at version 1 sub version 1 sub-sub version 9. The next step could be 1.1.10 or they could branch to 1.2 if its time to do so - but thats not because we are at 1.1.9.

Ok, I don't remember seeing any .1x versions but I have to admit I really wasn't paying much attention at the time so I'll take your word for it. :)

But if that's the case.... why have we gone from 1.1.1 to 1.1.2 etc instead of 1.1.15? (Or I suppose 1.1.2.1 would make more sense...)

Why don't we all just go home and sleep it off.

Well, from what I understand, during beta they were 0.1, 0.2 etc. Not sure what number they got to, but the system was pretty much started at beta, and that's the way most game companies do their updates. We got up to about 1.0.14 before version 1.1, and they switched to version 1.1 because you had to COMPLETELY redownload the entire client and re-install in order to update. Most of them were just patches, and stuck onto or copied over various files. Version 1.1 gave us newer graphics, different scripts, and a bunch more features, so it was almost like getting a brand new game. Version 1.2 is supposed to be like this too, with the addition of Havoc 2.0 and supposedly better graphics. Not sure when we'll see 1.2, since we really haven't heard much about it. So it may still be quite a few months away.

It's the physics engine that SL uses. Not sure about everything that the new havoc engine will bring, but it's supposed to be alot better than the havoc engine they're using now.

When I started beta, we were at version 0.2.1 . They released 0.2.2, 0.2.3 and maybe a few more, but then we went to 0.3.0. At the end of beta, it became 1.1.0. Then it went to 1.1.1, 1.1.2, 1.1.3, 1.1.4, 1.1.5, 1.1.6, 1.1.7, 1.1.8, 1.1.9, 1.1.10, 1.1.11, etc.

James at the end of beta it was 1.0.0 and then we got 1.0.1 and 1.0.2 and it gradually went up to like 1.0.12 until the huge 1.1.0 release happened (with all the pretty bump-mapping and particles) and now we're going 1.1.1 and so on until 1.2.0 comes out.

Derp :D

Ack, you're right. I got all confused. It was 1.0.1, 1.0.2, etc, through 1.0.12, then it went to 1.1.1, etc. It could go to 1.1.10, for all we know!

One minor correction Brad: SL has never used a patch system. Every update (even the 0.0.1 incremental updates) downloads the entire client, uninstalls and reinstalls. There was a time when it didn't entirely uninstall and a time when settings weren't saved between versions and a time when there was no 'auto updater' (which is really just an auto downloader). However it has always been the case that the entire client was downloaded and reinstalled.

Hmm, thanks ama, never realized that. I seem to remember whenever we patched pre 1.1, the downloads were always either really small or really big, but might have just been me not paying much attention. I've noticed that post 1.1, the downloads are about the same, so i assumed that was a new thing for 1.1 Oh well, my mistake. Thanks for clearing that up Ama.

I do think the client size jumped about 4-5 megs with 1.1 (around 12-14mb pre 1.1 and around 17mb post 1.1) so there was some change. And the size did change a lot in beta.

Really though, with a client as small as it is for a product that requires broadband to use.... doing an entier download isn't overly hard.

Dude they could go to 1.1.9.9.9.9.10 if they wanted, they can always stretch the numbers!

I've heard that Havok 2 is coming fairly soon -maybe by the end of the month - and that's probably what this is all about. I also had someone of the Lindens tell me it's only going to affect objects in motion, for the most part, so lets not treat it like the second coming, here.

It's more then objects in motion! omg it's liek mega lag cut via physical objects! Here you should all read Andrews post on Havoc 2 and what it will bring to SL.

It's good reading!

Second Life version 1.1 hasn't even landed on your PC, but we're already looking for some feedback about our concept for version 1.2.

The biggest change scheduled for Second Life 1.2 is a completely re-thought user interface, and the second major advancement should be integrating Havok 2.2.

As we're at an extremely early stage, nothing is set in stone and your help in refining these ideas and getting a feel for their relative importance to the Second Life community will be extremely valuable as we chart our future course. I encourage you to read the entire Concept Update about Offline Chat and IM, and let us know what you think.

There you have, things to look forward too!

there's an indication at the very very bottom that some of those newly freed cycles might be used to afford a greater prim count per sim. i hope the limit doesn't increase enough to turn our graphics cards to dust.

I'm still alive.

Anyways someone please explain what Havok 2 will do. All I know is that it will make SL better...

Havok is the physics engine. CUrrently SL uses Havok 1 because several features they need are not in Havok 2 (or weren't) but they were/are working with the Havok team to get those features implemented.

The main advantage of Havok 2 is that it is smarter - it uses less CPU cycles to do the same thing. It is a more efficient physics engine.

What this will allow them to do is up to them, they can make the physics engine more precise (less gap around things) and thus more accurate, and they can make it run a little faster. They could use the 'saved' CPU resources for something else (if the physics engine doesn't use as many CPU cycles then something else could).

Also I think Havok 2 solves some 'deep think' problems that can currently take out sims.

Havoc 2 is a serious upgrade in SL's laws of physics. It can handle prims more efficiently and has more rules for how they can interact.

In theory, Havoc 2 will allow for higher prim limits per sim and for prims to do more interesting things. :)
