Oh give me a break! Believe it or not Lindens aren't some magical freaking elf that exists only in a server room, they are real people with families and lives. I am happy they devoted this much time to it, being in the middle of 2 major holidays with the inevitable staff on vacation and New Years being tomorrow. Its a cool game, yeah. But a game.

A game?. It is a service. A service that failed, and we need answers for.

As my RL brother says.... 'fair' is where you ride rides and eat cotton candy. Heh.

One word and a number: 99.998% availabilty

Haven't used one in years, but their numbers were true in my experience. 300 development engineers hanging off one box, working, building 1M+ line code base. Drive failure was noticable only by warning message sent to the administrator and replacement was live. They are also a short drive from LL.

Well, here's the nutshell. I can live without SL... but I do have a LOT of time and effort invested in it.

I really feel for the Lindens and the programmers... I know they're going nuts. But I feel even more for the people who use SL to make a living... because right now they've just lost 2 days of work (and no telling how much more).

The thing that bothers me the most was that this was foreseeable and preventable. I told a friend online last week that SL was about to have a major system crash; I could see all the signs, and that was just from the user end. If I could see it coming as a user, I have to wonder why this wasn't met with all shields up.

I especially find it hard to understand that this came about because of "an equipment failure" (which I don't doubt, I just don't understand it). This company is supposedly worth 8 million $US. It charges RL $ for virtual land... and not small RL$ either. There have been news articles written on the ungodly cost of SL land.

So considering that this isn't some mom and pop operation that runs on a $200 / month budget... where are the redundant systems? Where are are the mirror backups? I've said all this elsewhere, but it bears repeating. I have to wonder what happened that a simple hard disc failure brought down an entire system for two days???

I'm sure there are reasons. I'm sure there are a lot of expert business people out there that would thumb their noses at those reasons. SL has grown beyond the point of being a nice experiment. It now impacts people's lives. There are now folks that whether they pay their rent and eat depends on SL. Time to get more professional.

I'm online

I'm sitting on SL right now since earlier this morning (about 6am pst) and I see a few others online as well, but not nearly as much, though the map looks fairly populated.

However I cannot login my alt avi on my other PC right now, I get the same crap as we all did last night. Even though I was able to log it in at about 6am also. Ah well...

if all your TV channels were continuously cutting off and going down.. would you stand for it? yes, you would ring up the company, complain and get something done about it as your paying for it...

Sl is exactly the same, its a 'luxury good', from an economists perspecive and we pay for it. personally since this stupid $8 million investment has come along the only progress we have is the new teen grid which sint up yet and which will get a hell of a lot more support than ours will.

Have you noticed the amount of leaving posts lately? i can safely say there will be a lot more if a service liek this is what's in stall for the future.

Chill guys ok, thier hardrive went BOOM! when a computer blows up like that (or data disk or whatever) it is a very bad sisuation. Yea i know we wont have our new years party but... hopefully thier was a lesson learned here..

And if the severs arent fixed in a week, we can all be assued SL will be offically dead. right?

but that still doesn't alter the fact that we pay for the service which is partially there or non existant! But sure, SL does state in their user agreement that they do not and will not refund any missing days/offlineness that ppl expierience.

Yes, LL have families and i understand that, but i am sure there are people in the world who will work on any occasion for money... People work on xmas day dont they?

It is a game, yes, and tbh i wouldnt be playing that much tonight anyway... but that still doesn't mean that people who would b using the service dont have the chance to do so.

At this point it makes me glad i dont own an island sim... paying monthly for an entire server jsut for it to lag like hell and go offline, talk about bringing ya to a lovely beach then kicking the sand in your eyes.

Sorry for the rant, im pi$$ed off, perhaps i should log off before i say anythign more

Ya know...

I just started taking some meds about 2/3 weeks ago. The meds are supposed to make me happy I think...

Yeah happy pills...

Anywho, they aren't working....

I hope SL is back up for tonight, for this is my New Years...

Lonely, Boring, Pathetic

Need SL so I can feel like I actually DID something tonight, besides sit at my computer and cry that I have no one and no where to go....

Ok you can cry your rivers for me, then I will build my bridge and get over it.....
