I thought Robot Stories was pretty good. It's not polished in any way, but the stories are good. Very Twilight Zone but with more emotion. The film is split up into 4 short stories. Here's brief summary to not give anything away. The first was about a couple wanting a child and they adopt robot baby. In this future, it's required to have a trial robot baby before adopting a real one. The second short was my favorite. It's about a mother trying to deal with the pain of her son being in a coma. She tries to deal with this pain by trying to gather missing parts for her son's old toy robot collection. The third I didn't like. It's about a robot hired in an office environment and deals with the harsh treatment of humans and ends up having strange robot sex with a female robot in the end (wha? ya i didnt get it either). The fourth and last short was great. This one was about an old man trying to cope with his own mortality. In this future, you live forever by having all your memory scanned into a sort of super computer network and you live past death by being in this system. His dead wife is there with him when he's at home-- through a holographic device. Both her and their son (who's alive) try to convince him to get his brain scanned before it's too late.
This type of film I can see people either liking it or just totally hating it. My friends who took me didn't like it at all but just wanted to give support for this first time filmmaker. But I recommend you all try to see if it's being screened in your area. Support independant film!

Cemetary Man It's got Rupert Everett and...i think the chick is Anna Falchi...anyway its a super cheesy zombie movie, but in a completely incongruent way is really poetic and lovely. hehehe you'll either hate it or love it. Nyih! edit: my favorite scene is when Delllamorte is wandering thru the cemetary sloppy drunk shooting the wings off the angel statues and talking to himself

Chip,
I've agreed with everything you've suggested in this thread. That's why I find your review of City of Lost Children Odd.
Were you watching the subtitled or the dubbed version?
I really think you need to take another look at this film.
The opening Santa Claus sequence. . . wow, that really got me.
But otherwise, can't agree more with your choices. Oh, and if you enjoyed Donnie Darko, check out Bubble Boy. I know, sounds like a weird suggestion - has the same lead actor though, and that kid has some range. Bubble is a silly comedy. However, the lead actor (I'm blanking on his name) plays it with such sincerity. You can feel it.
And Neph, I'd almost forgotten about Cemetary Man. Spectacular.
In fact, I'd agree with most all of the suggestions here. Actually, kind of odd how similar all of our tastes are.
I don't know if anyone suggested Adaptation (from the writer of Being John Malkovich, about his writing experience on that) but I'd like to throw that in. BTW, I've heard rumors that Kaufman's next movie is going to be "The 3" - the fictional movie being written by his fictional twin brother in Adaptation.

Jake Gyllenhaal. I personally didn't like _Adaptation_, but I thought _Being John Malkovich_ was fabulous.

I thought visually there was a lot to like in City of Lost Children, but the acting was just too over the top for my taste. Some of the characters grated on my nerves so much that I hit mute whenever they started speaking. I'm sure my reaction was somewhat flavored by the fact that I was watching it with my girlfriend at the time and she had a much lower tolerance for fantasy than I do. I was actually embarassed that I'd picked it. In fact she broke up with me not long after that. I blame the movie!

Charlie and I rarely go to the theater because of the prices, but when we do go, we go see the good ones ehe. The last three we saw were Butterfly Effect - decent, but messed with my head a lil. I wouldnt want to give anything away here but on the ride home, I had the mentality of 'even the smallest action can cause a devistatng effect.' - Needless to say, I was glad when we got home lol Lord of the rings:Return of the King - Very good. We whent with my mom and her Bf. I whent with my mom and her bf to the other two so i had to go with them to see the third . The first half is amazing, and the second.. well... I couldnt stop crying! I NEVER cry in movies lol I swear!! But I seriously could not stop. The whole ending is just full of emotion. But I wish I wouldnt have seen all three of those in the theater. I dont really care for the big screen and booming speakers. The point of movies still comes across sitting on your own comfy couch, with a pause button near by. Only real reason I say dont watch it at the theater is because in all three... my butt fell asleep! lol 3hours+ is a long time to be sitting still. ugh eheh. Lastly - The Matrix Reloaded - I laughed my bum off in the part where all the agents were coming after neo. Im sorry but the sounds and the way they were being tossed around was just too funny. Someone stated eailier in this post that the sex scene ruined it for them. Same here! Dont get me wrong, I always love a good tumble in the bed but - i dunno, it just didnt fit into the movie for me. They were in love and had a higher purpose to save the world from evil machines. But the sex scene was like a one night stand in the middle of a rave or something.. i dunno... I saw donnie darko on dvd a month or two ago - and wowza that movie really messed with my head lol. Its good, but weird. 'and thats all I have to say.. about that' (ehe, i dare someone to guess what movie that is from ^.^) And hmmm, oh yeah watched Jacobs Ladder last night. I saw it when I was like 12 or 13 but i was kinda disturbed by it - and didnt understand it then, for obvious reasons. I havent ever seen it sence, and avoided it because I remembered reaally not liking it. Well I got up the courage to watch it last night. Its pretty good actually, but fairly gross in some scenes. Ack sorry for such a long post. I'll just drop a few more movie names of movies I recently watched, and loved/have loved sence first time I saw. As good as it gets The Hours Falling down - lol Shawshank Redemption (gah sp?) Ninja scroll - (yay for anime) Clue - ( /invalid_link.html - Scroll down to find out why i love this movie lol) and thats all I can think of atm. I'll post more in a few days

I saw The Eternal Sunshine of the Spottless Mind this weekend. It's sublime, I almost cried at the end.
