Part of the reason I don't go to welcome anymore.

"LOLS GIVE ME YOUR COSTUME!"

give em' a box that says "AVATAR" with nothing but knee-high socks, a nice tie, and a codpiece.

ROFL!!!

My favorite however is the guy who goes around naked in a barrel!! LOL I'm building in the sand box and "Excuse me Sr. Might you spare some change?" I turned around and laughed my butt off at this sight of this ave. I gave him 1 dollar and he said "God bless you" and humbly turned around and walked away into the sunset with his barrle. ROFL. It was worth it. LOL.

That was not so much pan handling as it was creative thinking and role playing, so I would have given the guy wearing the barrel a couple of lindens. Also it does not sound like the guy was rude and he did not hound you.

Kind of like the guys in RL that have signs saying "Honestly - I need a beer". I usually give them a couple of bucks too. Once, when I was working in San Francisco this guy had a dog who would assume the begging position and had a little sign that said "Will Work for Skippy's" with a tin can tied around his neck. I could never resist and every day that dog got a a bite of my lunch and a couple of bucks from me. I have still have fond memories of the dog.

In SL when someone asks me for money I give them a box with lots of newbie stuff in it and a notecard that has lots of useful landmarks. If they have a creative idea that they share with me - I'll sometimes give them money to get them started with their idea so long as they are not rude. When they are rude and aggressive, I put them on ignore and teleport out of the area they are in. I've never had one stalk me - usually they just move on to the next easy target.

Oh well - maybe one of them that I gave money to will make good and give me 10,000 L. Love that idea Merwan! :D

i think LL should contact thier parents and tell them that if they do not supervise their children's behaviour on SL, that the accounts will be cancelled.

The guy with the "will work for L$" or the guy in the barrel is cute once, maybe twice, but after a while it's very annoying. Even a one time $9.95 account gets money if they log in every week. I don't feel any pity for them if they run out of L$. I run out of L$ all the time and it doesn't inhibit me from playing SL, creating objects, etc.

So the begger is willing to "work" for money, according to his sign? We should think up some special work for him to do to earn his Lindens.

I actualy saw the guy with the sign at the welcome area and for some reason it made me smile, giggle, and laugh spontainously. I dunno what it is but I just find the concept of a hobo or beggar in SL funny. I think its because theres no reason to beg for money, you get money in a stipend, you don't have to buy food in SL, you can easily make money yourself doing something usefull.

He wasn't too harrassing either, if people didn't really pay attention he just moved on.

As long as its all in good fun I don't mind.

I didn't pay him though either. :P

I usually kick a few L$ to those who have a good costume and attitude while panhandling... its more like "paying for entertainment" to me, since I usually get a kick out of it. But anyone just aggresivly asking for money is going to be ignored

I like to keep a can of those beans on hand to give to beggers. I tell them that I prefer to give food instead of cash as I wouldn't want to see them waste it on wine or drugs :P
Its entertaining if they equip it also :)

Sometimes people give me stuff to try and barter for stuff I made. "But I gave you x and x" ... kinda goes like this.

"Noob: Can I have that plane?"

"Me: this plane? right here?"

"Noob: Yeah, that one! can I?"

"Me: Hm. No."

"Noob: But I gave you <insert> !"

"Me: I will never use or where <insert> as I could make a better <instert> my self."

"Noob: Can I buy it maybe? 100 lindens?"

"Me: You couldn't buy it if you kicked Anshe Chung in the teeth and stole her credit cards. You will never own it."

"Noob: Your mean."

"Me: Incredibly."

... But I am a jerk who hordes all his posessions... But still. If somone asks for one of my crazy devices/guns/vehicles for FREE I have no business for them ever. Now if they offer to pay, even if its so very little I give them the curtiousy of politely saying it's not for sale. Beggers? Beh.

I've had n00bs come up and ask for gear sometimes. I might oblige them. But usually I get the n00b-greifers. All I give them is a free tour of six or seven sims riding my push gun or SimClear shotgun.

I have yet to play any multiplayer online game where some doofus doesn't pester me about free money/items/influence/whatever. One of my fond memories of Anarchy Online was the humble Leets and Reets, who would spout typical n00bish comments like "SPARE ITEMS PLZ!" and "CAN I HAVE YUR SWORD?!1!" as you kill them. Ah, good times. :)
I sometimes ask beggars what is so special about them that I should give them things that I worked for, and the best answer they ever have is "I wanna buy this thing..." or some other lame excuse. In City of Heros a bozo followed me around for 15 minutes trying to convince me to give him influence to buy enhancements... When I asked why I would want to part with influence that I was saving up to buy my own enhancements, all he did was start explaining exactly what he wanted to buy. So I started enumerating everything I wanted to buy, and how much it would cost... and after a while he just went away. I dunno what the heck he was thinking... that everyone goes around earning cash/influence/lindens/etc, but he's the only one with something to spend it on? The funniest thing, though, was that I was still fighting bad guys the entire time he was bothering me... I earned enough influence during the conversation to have bought the enhancements he wanted... and he could have too, if he didn't waste all that time begging.

Haha, I had a fresh-faced newcomer asking me for $200 in Goguen the other day. I gave him a detailed lecture on how to better improve his chances of getting money off of others, perhaps by performing for them or doing something original, even tell a joke or something. I encountered him at least three times over the course of an hour or so, occasionally hearing him shout out his request across the length and breadth of the sim for $200. Finally he came up to me again and complained that, even with his new tactics, no one was biting. I explained that the last hour had been a valuable lesson for him; I knew that no one would give him money, and if he wanted any he'd have to get off his virtual ass and earn some, or get a job.

"But I don't want to become an escort at a club!" he mourned, pitifully.

I laughed and laughed. Then I told him that he'd get used to it, the little slut, and that it wouldn't be so hard after the first time.

I get beggars asking me for money, some of whom are way older than me (in SL terms). As someone said, it's not like they need shelter and food in SL. I'm saving my L$ for a future project so always so no to beggars.

Are we all adults in SL or not?
