*Flings cow pies at thread*

Um, folks, I am NOT writing a cow into this flippin' story! :D

Maybe the hippos use Gateway computers or something...

Story continues...
= = = = = = = = = = = =

“Tales and Forms are all well and good, Erejone,” Wallow interrupted. She’d been silent for a long while, seemingly detached. “But it seems to me we’re getting off track. It’s clear our father wanted us to know more than the Forms tell, and it seems you do as well.” She raised herself out of the water and stood nose to nose with the monkey as he sat on the rock. “Back there, when you stopped Maw from shooting that creature…” Wallow paused, searching for uncertain words.

“Meretriculus - yes, child…” Erejone responded.

“You threw yourself in the way. And you said we mustn’t harm it. Then I heard words in my head, like my father was talking to me - only there was no one there, just the words.” Wallow spoke haltingly, as if uncomfortable revisiting the moment.

Sindonis looked over at Erejone questioningly. “A Symbol?” she asked.

Erejone nodded. “I believe so.” To the hippos’ questioning looks, he added, “A way to place power within an object - or a creature. Usually it’s triggered by a specific event or action. My guess is that your father meant for you to have the knowledge to protect you against his enemies. You certainly banished Meretriculus quickly enough, Wallow.”

“Banished,” asked Maw, “but not destroyed…?” She looked from Erejone to her sister. “I’m not sure if I should be more impressed or confused. Why shouldn’t we have destroyed it? Stomp said he was just a construct - a prim creature. Blow them up, they just come back again when their creator wants, no harm done.”

“Normally true,” Erejone replied, “but in this case the construct also held a life entity - and a very dangerous one.” The monkey drew a breath and uneasily rubbed his rapidly regrowing fur.

“Meretriculus is a servant of Grief… a creature known as a Grimm.”

Hmmm. I seem to have killed the thread. Must be some form of disease of the hippo-thalumus. Perhaps an acute case of thread-bitus?

Ah, whatevah. Apologies for the blatant thread bump. Wouldn't want to be a hippo-crite or anything.

The story will continue in the next day or two. Same hippo-time, same hippo-channel.

Yet another blatant thread bump. Apologies to folks who might be waiting for the continuation of the hippo story. I know both of you are just eager for me to continue... :D

So, anyway, I know the story of late hasn't been active. I haven't heard any indicative feedback, either positive or negative, on the narrative. So, without any incentive, I've not yet made my decision definitive on whether to keep this thread active, or take the initiative and move the cumulative story to a more effective thread where it can be productive at a slower pace, without disruptive impact on other hippo-related banter.

If you like the story, please let me know you feel in the affirmative - or if you're feeling pejorative, feel free to supply the appropriate invective.

Sinclair if you're having fun with it keep at it. Only reason to stop is if you want to!

WTF is C3PO supposed to be USEFUL for anyway, besides whining? Stupid piece of scrap metal would be more useful recycled as a toaster. But even that would suck, because who would want to listen to a whining wussy toaster? Is he gold plated? If that's the case he should just be melted down into gold ingots. Help the economy some, and stop being so damn useless you stupid bucket of bolts! R2 is 1,000 times more useful than your tin man ass, and he's shaped like a salt and pepper shaker FFS!

Sure... THIS I get from the first avatar I specifically wrote into the story... some gratitude... :D

( Just kidding, Derek - say, how's that fur growing back? It's not like it's MY fault you threw yourself in front of a Rocket Launcher... oh wait, yes it was... )

I'm not planning on ending the story, Garoad... but I've found I haven't been able to write enough of late to sustain the "Hippos" thread near the top of the new-post pages - ("Don't let the hippo thread die!";) - and it seems (to me anyway) that carrying the story here may have had the unfortunate consequence of driving away the random hippo posts, for good or ill.

Plus I seem to have lost my content co-creators along the way... :P

So I think that indeed I will move the continuation of the story to its own Forum thread, and let the original "Hippos" thread continue in its own unique fashion (and hopefully regaining its rightful constant place on the New Posts front page... )

Thanks to all who've contributed to the story so far. Still soliciting ideas and input...

Watch this space for the continuation location, as our intrepid hippos learn more about their mysterious father's past, the threat facing all of Altanima's avatars - and the true nature of Grief.

<heh heh heh...>

Hippo story new location
06-10-2004 13:57
As promised, the hippo story has been moved to a new location:

---> Hippos: Gnomecrusher's Legacy in the "World of Second Life" forum section.

Getting awfully close to writing some actual new words down...

Meanwhile, and conveniently enough, this also bumps the Hippo thread...

The hippo story lives! New prose added, and hopefully I'm back on a writing track for a while. (That's a good thing, right?)

Blatant Hippo thread bump and unrepentant x-post...

Hippos: Gnomecrusher's Legacy continues!

=Sinclair

edit: Another passage added 06/16.

It's been pretty quiet here - crickets chirping kind of quiet.
Maybe people are tired of hearing about hippos.
After all, when you look around here, all you see are hippos hippos hippos...

:D Like here:

Hippos: Gnomecrusher's Legacy

- - (My ever-so-modest Hippo fiction thread, recently updated of course.)

Here now, go read that. You'll laugh. You'll cry.
You'll wonder, "What the heck is Sinclair on, anyway? (And does he share?)"

But you'll feel better in knowing you're not me... unless of course you are. <huh?>

I'm still tweaked no one got my earlier joke. These three hippos walked into a bar...

No, not that joke.

The one about using cloned hippos in the thread, where I feel we should use free-range hippos,
...which after all need a large campus on which to roam.

Get it? Hippo-campus? ... ... Hello?

Geez, there are those crickets again...

I'm still have a lot of hippo on the brain. I often randomly shout out in public, "HIPPO!!!" And still get a lot of weird looks. I watch hippo documentries whenever they're on and basically scream hippo every time they say hippo! Why, Holloween I dressed as a hippo and went to work and continued to shout hippo!

Well, I do that in my mind...
