I am among all here who has deadlines to meet and projects to finish, I understand that everyone is pissed off right now because of the downtime with the hardware and I am sure some software problems. But think about this: Since the day of its inception, SL has provided an outlet for those that have had none, the people "Lindens" if you will have busted their asses for you to provide you with an interface that you can customize and create in until you are blue in the face. I hate hardware problems and I know they do to, think of the hours these poor people are putting in to get the show back on the road. Frankly I am hurt that more people aren't more understanding. Look at how fast SL has grown......thousands of people now know about SL and more sign up daily, did you not think for a moment that maybe they weren't quite prepared for the explosion we have had? They are people too and I don't think they have a resident psychic. Anyone just some hot air from me, I love SL and I am going to be late finishing my NYC project (sorry guys) but life as you know it will go on. For those not voicing it, YOU LINDENS ARE DOING A GREAT JOB. Sorry this had to happen.

Well we have hit day three, but I have to say that I got better than 8 hours active work done today, so I would say that it was highly productive. Sorry to all of you out there that can't get in. Linden's are working double time on three days now. They will get this monster kicked.

You forgot to add a poll option that was along the lines of "indifferent, because shit happens".

It's either "OMFG BEST EVAR" or "OMFG GONNA QUITZOR"

Flawed poll.

Very Happy.

I've been in SL for a couple weeks short of 1 year, and in all that time there have only been a handful of times when I couldn't log in, or I personally encountered any big problems. Granted, I don't try to be in-world 24/7 as some do, so they may be more frustrated than I am, but downtimes don't bother me.

I usually use downtime (when not busy with off-line or non-SL-related online things) to make clothes, or textures, or surf luxuryrealestate.com for build ideas, or any number of SL-related things that don't require being logged in. I think it's the SL Addict's version of a methadone clinic. It might not be SL, but it's still a fix.

I shall endeavor to create a more accurate poll the next time I make one. I thought I had covered everything. Oh well, I guess if there isn't an answer there that everyone wants, they can write it in the post.

I'm very irritated at the actual problems -- they are annoying me. In life though, there are many worse tragedies such as tsunamis causing massive loss of life. This, on a humanist basis, is small fries since our whole system wasn't lost and none of us (I hope) are dead.

I continue to remain extremely supportive of the Lindens, as it is they who are fixing these problems as we watch from the sidelines in most cases, and occasionally, send in bug reports and whatnot (speaking from a longterm perspective here). They really bust their asses for us, and I'm grateful.

GO LINDENS GO!!! :D

I'm a bit indifferent at this point. I buy a product and it doesn't work very well can cause some speculation that it could be something really unfixable. I'm not a programmer of any sorts so I really have no idea as to what's causing these outtages.I'd just really like to get back in and go on with my work. I'm new so i have a hundred and one things to do. While we're unable to log on can anyone help me get a start in a buisness... how to or where to buy a couple of vending and or gambling machines..

It's easy to sit back and complain when things aren't running (happens all the time with systems at my work). It's our nature. But yes, I do appreciate that the Lindens take the issues seriously and work very hard to get things restored as quickly as possible. There can be so many variables to technical issues...they may have literally had no way to predict that the fix they attempted last night would result in additional problems.

OUR money pays THEIR salary - people have paid for a service here and have every right to be annoyed. This is THE major problem with SL - no monthly fee so what do Linden labs actually lose if the average player quits? Answer - nothing.

Dip your hand in a bucket of water - take it out and look at the hole it leaves behind - THATS how important you are around here so lets not pretend anyone cares how supportive you are/are not.

Thank you all
12-31-2004 12:38
Just wanted to take another moment to thank all of you so far with the great comments. Life whether Real or Second is uncertain as I am sure the Lindens are well aware. They are troopers I will give them that and I am here to support them to the future. I wish more of us could let them know that.

As far as business goes in SL, I have seen a lot of dancers / escorts in action, some are making 3-4,000L$ a day on SL. I also see people building things, whether it be clothing, accessories or buildings and make from 10$L - 15,000$L in one day. You have to find your market, make a good product, update your stuff regularly and find a few well traveled malls to rent space in. You can make a very lucrative business in SL if you do that.

Remembering one fact, prim alignment is important when building objects.

Sox if you think that the measly 9.95 a month people pay pays their salary you are sorely misguided.

#1 the populace of SL is 60% non Land owners thus pay once and member for life.

#2 the land owning populace is barely enough to cover current bandwidth expenses.

#3 the 8mil infusion pays the salarys for now til SL can grow to a point of Land owner ship balancing out with # of free loading players and yes after 1 month of 9.95 its basically free loading off of bandwidth.

So if you consider those factors, a miniscule amout of down time and yes 2 days out of 730 days uptime is not a bad ratio I mean thats %.000273 down time pretty damn good track record of you ask me.

anyway, it will be up again soon as they get things settled in with the new hard drives and server start up.

Cheer up some people spend more on dropping money into wishing well which gives NO return on investment so......lighten up.

Thank you I do appreciate the ideas .. I'm in the same boat as william .. being a new person to SL. I guess what i need to know is how and where do i get a display that sells my product? I have a complete lack of knowledge on the where to get or how to build the vending machines and still could use some lessons on making clothes. Currently i can add textures wich i find really easy but the whole adding pockets and so on I just have no idea how it's done. Is there a guide book of some sort to do this ? I just don't know that the escort route is for me .... maybe I'll try it and see sometime :-)

LOL I found that out when I bought my first piece of land and built this really crazy huge house :-) I had to tear it down which wasn't all that bad I got plenty of practice from the first one. Re-did it and I'm ever so happy with the finish product. Looks real nice and ended up with prims to spare :-)

Disgruntled, of course, but when it comes down to it, I have to say I will remain appreciative of what the Lindens have created. I do hope these problems get fixed soon, however.

I chose irritated but supportive. But really I can't understand why they don't have back up systems. I only joined on 8 December and there have been so many down times that I am pleased I haven't invested heavily in land.

Woot Woot to shadow damn man I hope your always on my good side :-) I don't aggree with the whole freeloading analogy .. I'm a new member and will grow with SL and hopefully bring something viable fun and interesting to SL. But one thing I'm not is a freeloader by any means. I've given away as have been given I do what i can when I can while never ever asking for any type of handouts. I pay my 10$ because thats what the fee is BTW.If it was more I'd then decide do I want to pay more or spend my money elsewhere.

Try this

If you are relatively new to the SL environment there are a few places on the SL site that can help you:

http://secondlife.com/support/helpguide.php

This is one with some basic information, under community there is also several people that have added their knowledge into doing things in SL.

For adding folders in your inventory you can do it from the drop down menu on the top of your inventory or by right clicking where you want it to go. Right clicking on the folder allows you to rename a folder.

As for renting space, a large number of spaces on sims all over SL have openings whether in booths, vendors or carts. Setting up a place is easy if you just want to create individual pictures with items in the contents of the obeject. Most people can help you with this. Another thing is Vendors. There are a lot of free vendors that you can purchase that are fairly easy to set-up. I found one called AmaVend that uses the notecard programming for inventory in the vendor. It is so simple once you read the instructions. Very awesome for first timers.

Finding rental property, just go into find and type in rental under the all search. You should find some. Or just go to some of the malls. There seems to be a new large amount of vacancies al over SL. Guess some got tired of selling?

I have to say thus far, the poll results are reassuring when compared to the disgruntled posts I have been seeing.

Thanks for your participation, keep voting

I easilly appreciate the "This is not what I'm paying for" arguments which so often punctuate forum threads on days like this. The arguments are justified, and I give cause to the people who feel so. But personally, beyond all other considerations, I'm paying to participate in something which can't be found elsewhere and which, if not for the Lindens, would not exist.

It's neither for quality login experiences nor the daily quality of servers that I allow my credit card to be charged; it's for the quality of vision permeating SL.

I agree Vestalia

I think you put that very succintly. The truth is there is nothing out there on the net that allows you the freedom to do what it is that they envisioned for everyone. It is truly amazing and origional.

I love SL!

I'm just afraid it will die. That would totally suck.
