I have plenty of temporary favorites but Pink Floyd is the best band in history. Ever. Period.

On your list I would say Black Sabbat, but Ozzy is so much better by himself!
You missed some the greatest bands of today! Godsmack (Sully is my hero) or Disturbed (good Chicago band I got to back them!) and then there is Metallica(Any one that has heard S&M can’t say they are not one of the best.) _____________________

I picked Sabbath because Led Zeppelin or the Beatles weren't included...

Well, it's impossible for me to vote because you've got a bunch of great ones up there. There's no way to pick just one.
You gotta get Green Day the hell out of there though. They are not nearly in the same league with the others. Ignoring the question of talent for a second, every other band on your list was undeniably ground-breaking and each has had a marked influence on our culture, musically and otherwise, but Green Day hasn't done that at all. I think of them as a momentary blip on the desperately out of focus radar of the early 90's that is somehow still echoing. If you want to talk talent though, I can honestly say I've never heard their singer accomplish more than 5 notes, and not once have I heard even the slightes inkling of vibrato come out of his throat. I've never heard their guitarist play anything but simple power chords when he's not soloing, and when he is I have yet to hear him do anything interesting. His solos seem to be little more than an attempt to fill the empty space in the song with whatever he can think of at the time rather than a heartfelt endeavor to lift the song to a new level like a guitar solo is supposed to do. Their drummer and their bass player never seem to take any risks; they just keeping the beat, making sure the song doesn't stop until it's done. Now, I realize that's more or less the nature of punk rock, but if I'm gonna call someone "best" at anything, they need to have done something that hasn't been done before with their particular art. For punk, I'll put that honor where it belongs, which is with the originators of the style back in the 70's. Not much has been done to change or improve it since then. I'm sure some Green Day fans will want to jump all over this post to defen their heroes, and they're certainly free to do so, but you can't deny the facts. Whether you like Green Day or not, it is a matter of historical fact that each of the other bands on the list were remarkably influential and without any one of them, the history of music would have been entirely different, but Green Day has not done anything to fit that description. Maybe one day they might (I doubt it, but anything is possible), but in the here and now, they sound just like any number of bands that can be heard in countless garages accross the western hemisphere. They just happen to have been a bit luckier and conseequently have a bigger audience than most. (And yes, the music industry is almost entirely based on luck. Nine out of every 10 records released fail, regardless of quality, and 9999 out of every 10,000 bands fail, regardless of talent. No one has ever been able to figure out the formula for success in that particular industry. It just happens or it doesn't.) _____________________

OK I can see why people would pick on Green Day. I for one like them just not all that. I don’t get how people are not going after Guns N' Roses. What did GNR do? Nothing. Green Day brang Punk back. GNR did nothing at all. The biggest problem with GNR is Rose boy him self. The rest of the bad were great. It is good to see Slash out there doing a great job now days. Were is Rose Boy at now? Oh I seen he is working at a Pizza place. Nice down fall.
Kill GNR and put Skinny Puppy up there! Kill Green Day and Put well pick any one in Punk. _____________________

Green Day is not punk. If you really think Green Day is a punk revival, I would guess your maybe 25 years old. No offense. Green Day is what it is, but its not punk.
From the poll list, I voted for Black Sabbath. |

I can think of no best -- I certainly have many favorites, but I do think the world owes a lot to Kraftwerk. And yes, this includes the lineage of hip-hop music.

I have plenty of temporary favorites but Pink Floyd is the best band in history. Ever. Period. Haha. But they didn't make the list. Go, Freddy Mercury! I love this quote from allmusic: "Queen's music was a bizarre yet highly accessible fusion of the macho and the fey." _____________________

"Best" is pretty much impossible to answer in the realm of the arts -- there is no absolute. It's all subjective. Chosen Few does an admirable job of defining specific criteria upon which any particular band can be judged, but even that is just a set of criteria; those criteria do not define "best"
(And I greatly appreciated that post, BTW.)Just to throw this out for consideration, how's this for a proposed "goodness" criterion: Does the band achieve its self-defined artistic goals? This isn't wholly objective, but I would say that any band that meets its artistic goals is "good"... whether or not I personally enjoy their style. |

Did Deep Purple ever have another song besides "Smoke on the Water?"
Seriously, I can't think of another popular song by them. But I can play that song's melody on panpipes. _____________________

Deathtöngue (aka Billy & the Boingers). "U-Stink-But-I-♥-U" is was ahead of its time. And let's not foget the B side to that great Single, "I'm A Boinger". However, U Stink But I luv You is the Bands best effort. Somewhere, deep in boxes buried in a storage room somewhere in the Southwest US I have that square plastic record that was included as a tear out of a Bloom County book. But! i Nominate Spinal Tap as the best Band ever. Why? Because "this amp goes to 11" Champie _____________________
