Well it beats Hot, Wet, Sexy XXX Schoolgirl Thong events.
But, seriously... does this count as educational? I remember the classic box on the head n00b moment. Is this taking a burden off of Live Help? Or a new way to game the Linden support.
Serious discussion welcome... flames ignored unless they are truly amusing.

Next week I will be starting a ten-session course entitled How To Fly. This will cover such important topics as How to Find the 'f' Key: How to Turn Off Chat: How to Avoid Bumping into Things: and How to Change Direction. The final class will be a basic outline of How to Land - although the topic will be covered in full in the next ten-session course.

It's my class and I'm not trying to game the system. Daily at the club where I hang out I'm always explaining to people how to get the box off their head and the clothes on. I figured I'd get it out of the way all at once. It's a Linden approved class and everyone is welcome so if you want to see that it's an actual class come on over. I don't have anything to hide.

Making no assumptions.... just didn't realize that the box thing was so widespread. Figured it was a one-time problem per n00b. Now when I see the How to wear your Thong class.... S

I think this would be a great class. There used to be tons of classes on learning how to use/experience/play SL.
It's nice to be able to say to someone who needs more help than you can give at the time to check the event listings and have relevant classes there.

I wish I knew about the class before it happened *Rolls eyes*
But seriously I think it's a great sounding class. I've been on SL for only a week, and I'm starting to realise how much is really involved in dressing up an avatar. Everyone's been really helpful but I still find it frustrating with the more difficult things (piercings, hair, etc). I had no idea there were Poser Stands available, real looking skins, contact lenses, tattoos .. and it's not something taught anywhere on SL.
I'll definately be there at the next one.

Surreal Surreal, please don't take this as a flame - but I think its somewhat unfair of you to criticize a class that you didn't attend yourself. I felt Maeve did a great job, and while you may find the subject matter of the class silly - from your join date of Feb 2004 you do not appear to be a newbie, and may be under-estimating how some new folks can get stuck. Maeve came up with the idea for this class after her own experiences at The Shelter, which is a club that caters specifically to newbies, and older (chronological age) SL players. If I had a penny for every newbie that picked up a freebie item, attached it to their head and proceed to walk around our dancefloor, helplessly trying to remove the attachement, I'd be a rich man. I assure you Maeve isn't trying to game the system. Her class was discussed with Haney Linden well in advance of the class - and everything must be approved ahead of time. Educational support is not like the previous system were one could post a supported event relatively unmonitored. Maeve - good job on a successful class. Travis

Having sold through vendors and boxes, I really can't even tell you how many times people have messaged and asked me where the stuff went, how do they put it on, how do they get it out of the box, etc etc.
Meave, I hope you cover that if someone uses Sell Contents, it will go into a Folder in their inventory, and not a box. I get the "I bought something but it disappeared" IM at least a couple times a week.

I wish I had found a class like this when I started SL. I walked around with a box on my head for many days and couldn't figure out how to remove it. It still happens to me some times . I've spent WEEKS trying to dress my avatar! (Yes, I know......I'm a slow learner). I was afraid to fly, afraid to buy from a vendor, afraid to do anything. I'm sure this class will save many new users the time I lost in learning even the most basic moves in SL.

Surreal Actually - it probably is a good class for newbies. Particularly if they cover things like the check box for wear now when someone buys something from a vendor. It took me a time or two of buying clothes only to find them on my body after I bought them to know how to stop that. Also it would be nice when you are new to learn how to position a prim based article of clothing such as a hat, earings, glasses, prim based shoes and jewlery. If this is what they are really teaching, I think it is a valid class.

Read the post again. I asked questions. If you want to see me in critical mode, check any thread about the SLExchange debacle... if you're stomach is strong.
And the class is scheduled for this afternoon at 4pm I believe, so unless it is a repeat, I would have a difficult time attending it yet.
It does seem frivolous, but if people are benefiting, then great. It's good that someone sees the need and fills it. I only had the box on the head problem once.. well once by accident anyway, and it's hard to remember sometimes what it was like to be new.
Maeve states that the class is Linden approved. I think it would be nice if there was a way to indicate that in the Events tab. It used to be that Mentors gave those kind of classes and in theory anyway, that meant that the class was substantive... With the world as huge as it has grown, and with it being difficult to know the reputation of everyone...
Anyway, back to our regularly scheduled drama.

I think this is a great idea as well. Its not just the classic box on the head that newbs do. I remember for weeks when changing my outfits to change each item one by one. Thankfully someone informed me that i could assemble an outfit together in a folder and just drag that folder onto my avi and whoolah instant change. I would have love to have had a class that informed me of this in the beginning. Good Luck with your classes Maeve Huggerz, MJ

And of course all those endearing little quirks that SL has.
"If you have just changed your clothes, and cant actually see the changes, that doesnt mean other people don't see them! So don't worry, you probably ARE clothed. Then again, its also entirely possible that you just changed into an outfit which has not rezzed for anyone else yet, and they are seeing you naked but for a colored swirl where your clothes will eventually appear. So it's important to (a) keep those nipples and pubes in order (- you never know who is looking!) and (b) never ever ever change clothes at the welcome area.
If you appear stony gray for no apparent reason, though often after a change of clothes, you will probably frustratedly try various things, such as going into appearance and changing in and out of various outfits, trying in vain to get your textures to bake again. Don't bother. It won't work. And as we said before, you're probably not seeing what everyone else is seeing anyway!
And don't forget that about 5 minutes after changing outfit, you will pop out of your seat for no good reason as your body textures rebake correctly. So don't be in a rollercoaster or airplane at the time!
Thanks for your time. Class dismissed!"

Surreal Well when I was in Live Help I would get numerous calls on how to take contents out of boxes, how to apply tattoos, how to apply genitalia, attachments won't detach etc. So, it might be theorectically educational and even helpful.

I for one am strongly opposed to teaching people how to get dressed. You are only perpetuating the bondage of SLers everywhere! Throw off the shackles of your pants and be free, I say!

The 'ol "box on my head" thing is an old bug with newbies. They all seem to come with it pre-installed, and have to have someone else teach them how to use the Contents tab.

Its just a poor choice of words in naming the class. They used to call it "Second Life Basics".

As a clothing merchant i get a lot of ims from newbies asking: "Ahem, i bought one of your clothes, but all i get is a box on my head with a picture of the clothes on it, am i doing something wrong?"
