In celebration of the tax-free week in SL, you can expect to see a 500-meter-tall penguin over my theatre -- made entirely of light. Whoo hoo!

Err I kinda got the idea that taxes are being counted now, but since we are getting a refund last week was tax-free. So careful with that penguin mate.

Hey, you might be right, Eggy. It's not clear what Robin meant by this: "As for last week, the Linden IRS has decided the best thing to do is to declare a tax free week, and to rebate all tax payments received in the last assessment. "
Two possible interpretations: * Scenario A: Linden IRS is declaring this week tax free AND will rebate tax payments from last week. * Scenario B: Linden IRS is declaring LAST week tax free BY WAY OF rebating tax payments from last week. If it's scenario B, then I'm sorry but I won't be putting up the giant glowing penguin. And SL so badly needs one too. |

from Robin Linden in the Announcments forum:
As for last week, the Linden IRS has decided the best thing to do is to declare a tax free week, and to rebate all tax payments received in the last assessment. Last week (the fubar week) is being called "tax free" They're refunding all taxes from that period (which was last tuesday, yesterday) and not reapplying the fixed code to last week's tax routines. Which I suppose might mean no stipends which some rely on for making $, but at least we're note thousands in the hole. Good enough for me. Taxes are ACTIVE right now and will be paid come next tuesday. So don't go overboard :) Bos |

Weee! That is so sweet to hear.. Thank you Lindens!
Oh, and Cubey, if you ever do build that penguin, you should make it like your gun and have this Giant Penguin shooting smaller penguins out all over the land. lol ![]() _____________________

Eggy and Boso are right -- it's a tax rebate, a return of the taxes you paid for last week which were mis-calculated.
Sorry Cubey, but if you build that penguin now it'll be taxed when the assessor runs next Tuesday. _____________________

As a sign of appreciation for the tax refund, I promise for the next week to not shoot the tax collector on sight.

Just a silly Q, but why do Europeans start their corrective statements with "Err"? I have seen it often. _____________________

"err..." is just an onomatopoeia like "uhh...", doesnt mean anything =)
I learned it from americans anyway, way back in the dawn of the web when i was still in high school. |

er... and um... are strange language habits for sure. I honestly don't notice how often I use them, until I play back my writing notes from my dictaphone, and then I realise I get through several of them every few minutes.
Personally, I think it's my mouths way of taking up slack while my brain is catching up ![]() |

I didn't ask what it meant, it means "pardon me but I think you are wrong". Strangely in the scarce 5 years I have been online I have only heard Europeans use it. I was merely wondering why.

I have a friend who is interested in the etimology of language and slang... I shall ask her opinion on this, Pituca.
But, much as I hate to disagree with the head muchacha, I think 'er' and 'um' are also used when formulating ones next statement, not just for starting a correction. Well, I seem to anyway ![]() And I've heard people from all over the world using it, although they may very well have picked it up form europeans! lol |

Okay, I am ransoming this thread to get BACK to the original post...
CUBEY, what do you mean we won't have a Giant Penguin of Light now that the taxes are back in? I had already begun to form an entire theology based on worshipping it? Does this mean that Nietzsche was right, that God IS dead? A very woeful Bhodi |

hmm, I use hmm when I am thinking. never used err.
But then I am from Southern California and not a Yank. Yankees are from the Northeast US. Thanks for checking into it Eddie. Could it be from errata? Enquiring minds want to know. PS. Bhodie's post bumped in ahead of mine. I love two-threaded threads. _____________________

Heh... don't start praying to huge light-emitting penguins, Bhodi - there are much more ludicrous established deities around to give your life to

Erm...
Alas, the 500-meter-tall glowing penguin well never be... not until I'm rich in SL, that is. Instead, I built a temporary 200-meter-tall tower of glowing penguins. For a happy 30 minutes, they overlooked the bay in Minna. People saw them and fell to the ground in worship, for then they knew that penguins ruled over all. And then I deleted them. |
