Yeah but babies don't count as Vegans because they are fed milk - so they always come out tender. Yum... human veal chop. :D Breast is always best!

Billy's immediate reaction was what I was speaking to as a representation of a greater problem. After learning of the incident,

1) He didn't even understand what the artist was against or for.

So sue me, I admit I read it quickly and didn’t catch that he was against fox hunting but against the publicity that surrounds it. You do not need to be so damned condescending. It is not a federal crime to misread something is it?

2) He found the abject cruelty hilarious.

Explain to me why you completely disregard what I said when I clarified what I meant in post #23 where I clearly state that I was NOT laughing at animal cruelty.

I found it rather disturbing that the only post in this thread was that type of reaction, and I see it as a greater problem with impactful art and its representation. Art as protest is tricky enough when it doesn't involve taking life.

I would appreciate you not misrepresenting me as thinking animal cruelty is funny. I am an animal lover in fact and abhore such things.

The artist wasn't being hypocritical

Quite contraire. He is still a hypocrite because isn’t what he is doing just drawing even more attention to the issue? Furthermore he is going to do it again, creating more attention on top of attention.

Yeah... I guess I was composing my post during the time that you posted your clarification. I did not see this. If I misread your original sentiment then I apologize.

Kendra,

<<So to answer your question --He's not against fox-hunting --he's against the trivial fights over banning fox-hunting.>>

He might not be hypocritical, but he is using the same fallacious argument that has been used by reactionaries through the ages. "Why send rockets to the moon, when there are people starving in Africa?" "Why send aid to Africa when there are people desperatately poor over here?" And so on.

The fact is our world is large enough, and multifarious enough, to accommodate all points of view, and for people to choose their own particular fight. Trying to prioritise need just leads to a blinkered approach to life, IMO.

On that we definately agree.

Would it be art if a fox ate an artist in protest?

I ate a vegan once in protest...tasted like shit

You need to have some hearty grain-fed vegan. The ones raised on coffee, cigarettes and potato chips aren't nearly as good.

I for one love the veggies who wear leather shoes...they are the most amusing.

"Everyone gets really worked up about a furry animal, but no one cares about each other."

Perhaps partly because animals can't defend themselves, but humans are in control of the stupid decisions they make. Besides, crack and murder are already banned. :p

If there's a human (even a crackhead) drowning in a lake and a fox drowning in a lake, how many humans are gonna go for the fox first?

Well, if the human was someone I didn't like and the fox was the beloved pet of a very rich and eccentric person, I would give serious consideration to saving the fox.

I for one love the cynics who would rather point out inconsistencies in other people's behavior then appreciate free-will, personal decisions, and awesome gestures of humanity... they are the most amusing.

I am greatful that I can afford to shop in trendy NYC vegetarian-friendly stores to find fake-leather shoes. However, I am not pompous or jaded enough to assume everyone is as fortunate. And not everyone can go to work in a pair of converse all-stars. ;)

Also, I respect other's decisions as to where they will draw the line when it comes to intentions and how they relate to real-world actions. Is a Janist who wears a mask as not to inhale bugs hypocritical because they might step on one in stride?

Oh, and please keep the veggie jokes coming... but can we put a little effort into making them funny? :)

Hmm...you're saying you'd let a person die if you didn't like them, and saving a pet instead rewarded you in some way?
