What if SL is both growing AND contracting, can we then say that SL is throbbing?

I in fact believe that one of the Lindens involved in the marketing direction of SL worked on the Sims project, or one of them anyway.
For myself I generally find the game nearly unplayable, and my hardware is good; while short-term accounts may be up, or just the low end 9.95rs, I would suspect that high end registration is down. Bugs and lag are so bad that the only place I can have fun anymore in SL is a wide open sim, but because I can't justify the cost of buying a sim, I just can't do anything permanent. The gambling and dancing wears out after a year believe me you get sick of the same old thing appearing in the world over and over again. It ain't a home for large-scale, yet independent builder coders anymore, feels like it's all business now, makes me sad ![]() My Natoma house will stay forever, but I am thinking of tearing down the Vorago. The sim it's in is way, way too laggy, sorta pointless to keep paying for the land to keep it there. _____________________

Well....let's see....
Is Second Life growing? About 20% per month (net) with a total of over 15,000 Residents as we type. Are we marketing? Maybe not at the rate of millions, a la TSO. But our marketing spending today is substantially higher than last quarter, when it was substantially higher than the previous quarter. Will you see us on TV anytime soon? Not likely. Did a Linden do marketing for the Sims? Nope. I left Maxis/EA when The Sims was still in development. It shipped about 18 months later. ![]() _____________________

No room for large scale independent coders and builders? Waaah?
I have been busy trying to hire good ones for weeks for the DarkLife project. Sulumor got a 1/4 sim to play with, undisturbed, me and a few others are building a huge undeground temple and a town in another 1/2... So maybe it's not possible to hide away and build giant palaces to ones own greatness (Kane stylee hehehe).. but there has never been a better time to work on wonderful builds. From the Bedazzled team, to Spitoonie, Peter Pan lot, DarkLife.. And I'm sure I'm missing some! Collaborative building is fun too! PC _____________________

Spend a couple hours a day the next few days in the Welcome Area. You will probably be surprised how many happy, confused, excited, and unjaded people you will meet. Their excitement and wonder is what fuels me, if I ever get a little down I go to the Welcome Area and see all the potential coming in and I always feel a lot better.
SL is growing, we have to make sure it has some food. Challenge yourself to help a new player to learn a couple of things and understand why you spend so much time here. _____________________

Is this... 1) Active users who log on at least once a week? 2) Paying accounts? 3) Any account that has not been canceled? Because if it is third one this is not really growth. 9,95 US$ lifetime accounts that were once created may never be canceled, even if user stops logging in the service. Would it be possible for Linden Labs to make more detailed statistic about population growth available? And would you mind sharing formula with which you determine amount of new land and L$ you add to the system? Is there data available about how many L$ are added to system and how many are removed via money sinks? _____________________

Why should they?
This is confidential corporate data. Surprised they tell us as much as they do. PC _____________________

I have a place almost as magical as SL. It's called my Fedora server. I have scripts for everything, and my database runs four different web domains... I have many ideas too as to how I could integrate my ever growing infrastructure with SL through their XML-RPC and Email interfaces... But waiting on the Linux client means I'm out of it.
To get me back in the game and developing exciting new scripted stuff, I'd need regular access to SL, and the only way I'll get that is with that Linux client. I know Linden Labs are working on it, but I just want to keep pressing the message, it's important... |

Actually it's not so important for me anymore... I got a hosted server, and now I can be in any OS I like...
Also in other good news, my Fedora server world and SL collided, resulting in lots of XML-RPC goodness! |
