i call it linden. i'm going to linden; i'm in linden; the campground in linden (as opposed to the campground at grist or baker); the land of linden.

it will confuse me if y'all start calling it something different. then i might cry and you would all feel bad. so stop the thread and everybody agree to just call it linden okay?

welkin... hmm, I like - it gets that kinda nerd-core free association thing going. I end up thinking "Welk" (as in doesn't stand a chance in a supernova) and Walken, as in Christopher.

For the longest time I was confused and thought that the world was called Prelude, not just the beginning area.

I like Prelude as a name for the whole place - really sums up what SL is to me - a beginning, a starting point.

From there you make of it what you will.

Plus, the word Prelude is pretty

I hafta admit, I just call it SecondLife... or Essell (doh, I am NOT gonna start typing phonetically again, that takes ages )

I also use the phrase 'in-world' a fair bit, so I like the ambigousness of it just being 'a world'.

Bah... too many things have names and labels in this crazy 21st century! Let's just call it 'thingy'!

Once upon a time (May 2002) we had to come up with a name for this place? service? world? other than the one we had used when it was a project (LindenWorld).

We struggled through all sorts of names that had interesting meanings that might seem like a place.
- Sansara (world of appearances and endless change -Sanskrit)
- Thera (ancient Greek island, thought by some to have been the lost paradise of Atlantis)
- Luminus (Latin, light of life)
- Jardin (garden, French)

Then we thought about Linden trees.
- truth made clear
- "Those born under Linden Trees look at the world through the glasses of their dreams and imagination, without them we would end up forgetting how beautiful life is."
- Protector

We even tried to make up some new words.
- Lindia
- Viviterre (land of life)
- Creoverse (world of creation)

For a while we got into sci-fi and math.
- 333 Again
- Area 333
- digital-gen
- Rule 110
- The Grid

Finally we decided we wanted to have a name that suggested the experience rather than a place. Someone came up with Second Life. We asked our Early Creators, who all said "YUK!"
- Not catchy
- Insulting to my first life
- Too religious
- Am I dead?

Hmmm.

Ultimately, Second Life started to feel right. It said a lot to us about what we hoped the richness of the experience would be. Plus we could get the domain name AND the trademark.

And so it became Second Life, where we're all living happily ever after.

I thnik we should call the land "Finite" becuase it's self depravating... and the world, while having a capacity for infinites... isn't.

Or we can call it "Hydroxus Alpha"

Or "Whitvale Studebaker"

Or "Land"

Or "MINE!!!"

I kinda like "Greiftonia" which was referenced in the other thread. At least it was something like that (too lazy to check).

Thus after much verbiage we come to the real reason it is called Second Life.

Unfortunately, "firmament" means "sky". not "earth". It's true! http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=firmament

I don't think names really apply much when there's only one of them that matters. (THE world, THE moon, THE sun, etc.) When there's more than one grid, then distinctions can be made.

I must throw my weight in towards naming it The Grid.

In my overstimulated mind, having a world named "The Grid" evokes massive techno music as a camera sweeps over a vast, mathematically perfect world (like the 256x256 Sims, or grids, in SL), showing you the vast difference and creation potential of the world, yet making you realize that it IS an artificial place.
