So I have a money tree on my land, and so far I've given away about 3k since i had it.

I really like have the tree, and helping out new players. But something kinda bugs me.

When I am near the tree, and a newbie is plucking it's fruit, they pluck, and fly away.

No Hi! or Thanks!

Now i hardly expect everyone who plucks from the tree to IM me and say thanks. But if I'm standing right there, a thanks would be nice.

Do they not know, that's not lidnen sponsered?

Has anyone else had this issue? Whats going on when people pluck your tree while you're there?

I like the money trees. I really do. But they bring out the weirdest things in people.

EVERY time I flew near my money tree when it was up and there was someone near it, they teleported away before I could say anything. EVERY TIME. We're talking at least 15-20 times in the course of a week.

Weird. What are they running from? One time I actually did get a conversation started with someone; I asked him if he was liking Second Life, etc etc... As soon as he had plucked the tree clean, he teleported away without so much as a peep.

...sigh...

Well at least I know it's not just me =)

I even rated one guy who had an awesome avie. And he poofed. =( I don't care about being rated back, but shesh, not a word was said.

I know it's not easy being a newbie, but damn this money isn't free, and I can certainly make other plans for it.

I'd hate to take my tree down =(

But I don't wanna be taken advantage of either.

I've been noticing a trend of the same couple of folks that are running "rounds" around the money trees around the city sims... they come in, take the money, then tp off to the next one. I'm going to start banning the ones i recognize coming by every 2-3 hours, every day, for a week.

I think they think they are doing something that they are not supposed to be doing. Often if they see people they run away.

I wish there was a way to track money we pay out and to who.

We can see who has paid us, but not the other way around.

If this were possible, i'd look for a trend too. And blacklist the ppl that seem to be coming back every few hrs.

Not sure what you mean? Do you have a link? lol I asked live help, and was refered to the account history window. That shows me all the money i recived and from whom, but as for all the money i've spent, it's just lumped in one total. No details about how much for who.

Unless I'm not seeing something....

LOL, neither did I! This is awesome.

The sad part, though, is that I am seeing some very distinct patterns of abuse. The same names day after day. I wonder if we should figure out a way to share this kinda info without posting to the forums?

*Edit: BTW, I did have a very lovely conversation with a newbie from Denmark at my tree. So, I don't think everyone is inclined to poof.

If you get me the money tree script, I could edit it to wait 10 minutes before giving the money... :)

That would be cool -- better yet, maybe cap the dollar amount a single player can collect within a 24-hour period.

Yay! It's like spawn camping but better!

Don't need a group!

Can dine and ditch!

See why giving free money is no answer?

"I'll ban you for using it too much!"

What the hell do you expect?

Come on.

I can do that too. Both shouldn't be very significant mods. I would just need the code.

Someone who has a sort of similar name to me on here made quite an astute observation. This person remarked that watching newbies come and get L$ from the money trees is like leaving food out for deer and watching them, in effect, snack it up.

I smiled warmly and quite agreed. :)

Thank-yous are nice.

Interestingly, there have been a few money tree TREEFER KIN who have been suspended for other actions. I hope their L$ was not used to fund questionable activities. ;)

Actually, I shouldn't pretend to be shocked.

Gambling is one of my vices... hard to get away from that.

I agree, people are odd. But, I leave it up to each owner to determine for themselves if a specific newbie is abusing the system. I think having a global blacklist seems a little too "Orwell-ish". I mentioned before that we will have those few lowlifes that create alts just to run around and pick from trees. But, there really is no way to distinguish a deserving newbie from these alts. And, the maximum someone could make doing this (even with multiple alts) is in the pennies/hour range. Once again, I leave it up to each tree owner to blacklist those folks they think are doing this. Are they the ones that don't talk back to you? Your call...

Addressing the ideas about further curbing payouts:

1. "Waiting 10 minutes between giving out money" would slow down the system too much. Right now the max any single newbie can take is L$25 while they are on the Last 5 Recipients list. This guarantees that 5 other newbies must come by and pick at least L$1 before the original newbie can pick anymore. I has been watching this since I made this change and it has slowed down the 'tree circuit' people considerably.

2. "Storing how much every newbie has ever taken" - Unfortunately, short of complicated multi-script memory databases or offline databases, this is limited by the amount of memory a script can use. While I could mod it out to maintain a self pruning list up to max memory, I didn't feel it was worth the effort.

If you haven't upgraded to at least V2.7, go by Bravo Bravo - Garmisch(60,200) to pick it up. This is the release that reclassifies newbies as 30 days or less, increases last 3 recipients to last 5 recipients and fixes a bug where the maximum picked goes from L$44 to L$25.

Keep the suggestions coming.

P.S. - As far as what they spend it on - well, doesn't everybody spend their money on sex and gambling in SL? ;)

tinastar i'm gonna track you down and rate you proper. how can something so useful and important be so hard to find. thank you thank you.

thank you as well lf. you already have ratings so i'll have to give you a tree or something.

sapphire has been very responsive to us and made several changes to the code. i personally still think that two weeks is long enough for newbies to pick free money. they are usually pretty well acclimated by then.

and there is a cap on theh amount of money they can pick if they are still on the last three recipients list. but hey, we're giving money away. it's going to be gamed just like everything else inworld. you can't offer public support without leaving yourself open to abuse. sorry bout that.

As you have a history for, Sapphire, while being altruistic, you think these things through well.

I suppose a criterion in deciding these things will not necessarily be any specific numerical factor, but anecdotes shared about which newbies have a tendency for... uh... strange interactions involving money trees. I have already heard a collection of amusing tales, and word of troublemakers does get around. It is sort of amusing. ;)

I suppose instead of "I heard it through the grapevine", we'd have "I heard it through the money tree".

:)

Here, let's try this:

True newbies <fill in the blank>

1. Always wear wings
2. Have a club tag
3. Take off clothes at the drop of a hat

Appreciate the thought, and maybe I'm too new to get it, but this does seem too much like feeding the noobs on the front lawn and watching through the windows. If you turn the porch light on, do they freeze before fleeing?

Thanks, but I'll pass, I've come to SL to try my hand at creating things, not to suckle on someone else's tit. ;)

I wouldn't mind putting a Money Tree on my land, but I would want to be sure TRUE newbies are the one's that are benefitting from it.

Is there a way to set an age date on the tree? Like no one older then a month can get money?

Thanks!
