I have noticed many threads that started off with some fantistic ideas in the forums.

What do you think?

Can we still have adult debates in the SL forums?
Yes

or

Debates are a thing of the past they always get derailed?

No

NO comments please just a simple yes or no and your vote is private, only the results fo either yes or no will be seen.

Thanks;

Cat

I do think there is a place for humor. Unfortunately, some of what I've been seeing are mean-spirited jabs and insults -- personal attacks on other individuals instead of discussion of the ideas contained within.

Also, it's been very confusing for me to read most "serious discussions" in recent memory on here -- and that's not just a generalization -- because the noise-to-signal ratio is so high, not to mention the hostility contained within, that I just shrug and check another thread. And then another. And another. You get the idea. It's quite redundant.

So, I wouldn't say they always get derailed, but they often do. I'll just vote for NO, but this is to clarify my position.

I hope this thread doesn't get derailed too. :(

C) Debates with passion and wit are worthy of our attention.

Forum debates are rarely linear. After a bunch of people get involved (for better or worse) the debate generally fractures into several threads within a thread. That's to be expected. Superfluous posts that don't really have anything to do with the discussion aren't really a problem in my opinion. They're easy enough to skip over and sometimes the humor is appreciated.

Oh Ace, stop your redundancy! You know Fruit Loops cleanse the soul, not Cocoa Puffs! :D

I will be civil here. Because certain people do not get the answer they want, they post, repost, and POST AGAIN. That's what's called spamming NOT debating. When the person is not getting the answer he/she doesn't like, renaming the topic to say the same thing is not making a different topic. All of what's been going on lately, I do not like to see. But yes, thats just an opinion. I see it as someone trying to push their ideals/agendas onto others thinking its best for the 'community'. When things become redundant, they become useless. Plain and simple.

Ok, besides the funnies ... ;)

I think debates have basically gone down the drain these days. With all this government talk being thrown around, it's caused friction between those who want it and those who don't. All the latest government debates just turn into flame wars and end up crashing and burning.

It's getting worse now because all the flame wars everyone has gotten into, it's made people have grudges against a certain person.

Like Chip said, the thread starts breaking into individual threads. It becomes one versus another.

Thanks Einsman that is a valid point. I agree I consider that spamming as well. I have noticed a lot of redundancy lately especialy in the general threads.

You have been around a long time. Us old timers like to think about the positive aspects of things. What positive changes could be made to get the forums back in order?

Hey Nick thanks nice input there. What can the we do to curb these flame wars? I would love to see a decent debate on Gov't but your right ill feelings and such come into play. I wish more ppl would take on the "subject" and not the person. Hating each other only stops us from possiably working on great projects together. Thats a bad side affect of the flame wars. How do you think we could calm the flames a bit?

I really and honestly don't know catherine. I think there needs to be more research on the forums before posting a subject to see if it's actually been debated before posting.

LOL is that humor I see Eins :) Come on now your a smart guy and we are having a lovely adult conversation right now. I think one thing that would help would be to step in and say stop when we see someone getting flamed. Or perhaps just a simple statement every now again. We are all over 21 here, maybe we need a an outlet for the crazy happy no holds bard topics. Let ppl joke and even rant. If they dont have a place to do so then they just seem to take over the entire place.

SL residents are some of the most intelligent ppl I have had the pleasure to meet. I understand SL has gotten bigger and harder to manage. That is a problem that needs to be looked into. I think anyway.

Thanks for asking my opinion Eins :) Now please tell me yours.

I don't think "we" can. It's really up to that certain person. They just have to respect the other, or atleast just try to hold it in. :p

I guess if we try to tone our "voices" down we can keep a stable discussion. But, you can tell hostility tends to leak out the more heated it becomes.

Nick that is very true sometimes in a heated debate ppl let other ppl get the better of them and they don't realy think before they type. That is a human emotion but yes I think it can be done. I have been trying to take a deep breath try to see things from the other side and not post becuase of a gut reaction. Like you said that is not always possiable. Although if we all want progress together then I realy think we all need to try a little harder and making sure we see a debate or a conversation all the way threw.

No i dont expect to see us all singing "we are in the world" in a thread but I think leading by example is a positive step. After all we all have one thing in common reguardless of our individual opinions we want to see SL continue :) right.
