I think I may need to take a break, I'm really pissed right now. This entire community is getting totally out of hand. Why the hell do you all have to COMPLAIN and BICKER so much? God, just get in the game and SHUT UP! These forums should just be REMOVED at this point -- they had a use in beta, when we had only 6 hours a day of SL, but now that we're 24h, people just come here and bitch and moan about the stupidest things.

Some of you people can be downright mean, and I honestly don't want to hear it anymore. I hate all the 'cliques' that we have being formed, and all the people that think they're above one another. God, I just seriously hate everything and everyone right now. Maybe it's because it's 1 in the morning, or maybe it's because I have the flu and I feel really, really sick. I have no idea, I just hope I feel better in the morning. If not, it's bye-bye James Miller, as I doubt I'll be logging in much anymore.

Bye.

Dont let the few get you down James. Take a few days off, it does help out. I enjoyed the five days away I spent over the Thanksgiving Holiday.

James - understand your frustration and hope to see you back soon. Second Life just wouldn't be the same without you...

I'm seeing more and more posts of this type, and it is beginning to frighten me as to the future of SL. . .

What can be done about this? Why such the disparity between how people seem to act in game and how they act on the forums.

Please James, don't leave us forever. My ride in one of your taxi prototypes was one of my best and earliest SL memories. You bring a lot to the community and are appreciated.

Let the negative people fight it out. Eventually they'll go away.

**off topic**

The cool thing about forums is that they are voluntary. We choose to read them and thus we also choose to be affected by them, for better or worse.

I recommend to all that if a thread turns into a flame war or if you feel you may be negatively affected by a post, immediately discontinue reading and move along.

To read/post/participate is to allow exactly what you do not like to live/thrive/continue, enabling the very thing you detest.

To do the opposite and not participate eliminates it from your reality and thus you will not be affected. If enough people do the same, it will die before it could have ever lived, disabling the very thing we all detest.

**end hijack**

So far the SLTC TS server has had nothing but positive interaction. During your forum hiatus, join us there and I promise you will have a good time. Unless we are all scripting, we are very quiet during those times.... hehe

its easier to get mad at someones words in chat than your voice it seems. When people read text, the tone is all in your mind whether it is yelling ect. When its voice you hear tone and how they feel toward what they are saying. try talking to your worst enemy from online in voice chat :P pretty weird.

Take a break. I am. I skim the forums but you can pretty much tell by the titles what to skip.

Turning the SL forums into whineplay does alot of damage.

Basically the good Linden people will have to wade through so much trash to find the few postings that contain valuable feedback about SL, it becomes no longer viable for them to read the boards at all. Taking away the most direct way to see what needs improving, and also taking away alot of the motivation (yes, positive feedback has that effect on people).

This sooner or later happens to all MMOG forums. The most extreme case were the old Everquest forums. There it became so bad, it coined the term "whineplay", and lead to eventually closing the forums completely, with only a tech-support forum remaining, where each post has to be manually approved by a moderator before it shows up.

Geez, James--don't quit! Take a break and get well.

As for "whining", sometimes it's justified, sometimes not; but everybody has to blow off some steam once in awhile and a forum is the most available place...just try not to take it too seriously. I still think SL has the best sampling of players overall. Put it this way...I don't think you're gonna find a better situation anywhere else.

would it be better if these discussions had to occur in world because there were no outside forums. of course the lindens need somewhere to announce things and let us "announce" technical issues and such back at them. but general chats, questions and such could be handled at timed gatherings on my land. well...

NOT having script forums might promote some ADVANCED workshops. i see very very little of that sort of thing going on in linden. it seems that once you get started, you either read the forums or you isolate yourself. i don't mean entirely, just to the kind of advanced material that is discussed here and, as far as i can tell, only here.

I completely agree Garoad. There have been a few personal threads that should have been kept in world, and LL has responded by saying in no unspecific terms that threads ranting about particular players are against forum rules, but everything else is just good spirited debate by people who have strong opinions, and I think all in all these forums are remarkably civil. Never once in the 7+ months I've been playing have I had an unpleasant experience in game as a result of my participation in the forums. I love a good debate and these forums are an excellent resource for LL to see how various things effect the attitudes of the player base. If you feel like things are headed in a direction you don't like then stating your opinions and trying to influence others is more helpful than silence. SL is a brand new world, and unlike other mmog's, there aren't velvet ropes and treadmills in place to keep us all in line. We (the players) have an immense role in how the world takes shape... and because of that, individual subjective opinions play a much bigger role here than in any other game. That means things get messy and even contentious sometimes, but that's gone hand in hand with freedom throughout human history. It's not only healthy, it's vital. That said, I take a break of a week or two every now and then just to prevent burnout. Try not to take it all so seriously.

I say rezz a thunderdome in Jessie and get it all out in the open, with admissions paid into a pool that gets assigned to the winner.

James, I sympathize with you, but comparatively, these forums are extremely civil. Yes some of the threads can get frustrating, and people seem to be at each other's throats right now because of overcrowding and prim limits (yes, there is plenty of land available in PG, but honestly, if people really wanted to live there, they would be). This is not a sign of the apocalypse, it is just part of a natural cycle.

Forums are for public expression of issues (social as well as technical), and are a necessary part of a thriving community. The forums that you are speaking out against are the same forums you are using to complain about complaining. (There seems to be some irony there somewhere). Without the forums, we lose our individual voice in the larger community, which would be a shame. Stay away from the forums if they are bothering you, but please don't leave the game - I don't think the forums are going anywhere, and I don't think people will ever totally get along in these forums or anywhere else, that is unrealistic.

Thank you all for posting! :)

I feel a lot better now, and I'm going to stay, for the time being. I just wish everyone would keep all their rants (which are usually about the SAME THING) to one or two topics, not 12.

I also want to say this to the few people who've been posting that this software is only for people who are creative, that is *not* true. These people have been posting things which basically mean that they want these users to LEAVE (while still trials) and go back to "There" and "TSO". That is the totally wrong attitude. By pissing off trial members and making them leave, you've just shortened the life of your Lifetime account by years.

Do your best to make trials feel welcome, it certainly can't hurt.

I don't think there is anything wrong with taking a break. I think it's safe to love SL from afar for a while. You can still remain active in a lot of ways. I still talk about SL like I live here in FL, yet I haven't logged in in days now. I think I might be even more inspired when I make my 'big return' and find new sims, new people, new ideas (and hopefully I won't be kicked out of the Mentoring group by then, phew! ... Ohhh, I miss hosting events so muuuch..!!!) Take a break, read the forums like you read the newspaper, and contribute from afar. Taking a break is not a negative reflection of SL.

Sometimes you just feel like deadheading for a few thousand years. Make sure to get updates every decade or so though...

Not sure this really helps but my life was simpler before I started reading the forums. You just sucked into all the drama and BS that gets thrown around here. Least in SL you dont have to hear about it unless its from one of the people involved.

James, dont leave SL, just stop reading the message boards for a while. There's a big difference comparing SL to the forums.

Another suggestion for something to do to take a break... read a Terry Pratchett novel or three. I just finished my first and I haven't laughed so much in a long time. Brilliantly funny stuff :)
