Should Second Life Have a Government?
For Example Every 5 sims there will be an elected leader to represent and reach out to the people living in those sims. Every week or so the leaders of the sims will meet and discuss issues in SL. The issues will be (hopefully) discussed with the Lindens to help make SL better.

Eugene, honestly, you're getting a little... overzealous. Besides, we've already talked about all these thigns already

A bit of healthy advice. Bringing up the idea of "government" in Second Life is pretty much an open invitation for flames. It has been discussed ad infinitum, and the posts usually just turn into a big ugly steaming pile of name calling and rude remarks about one's lineage. Run while you can. Everyone else, go easy on the guy. He's new.

Yes. I do think there should be a player run government but it should be opt in only. There are a lot of people who play this game to enjoy virtual individual libertarianism in a way that isn't possible in RL. I think your idea of confining it to 5 sims or so is right on. I suggest your read up on the Neualtenburg Projekt. It's a fledgling attempt at creating the first structured governmental system in SL. It comes complete with a constitution and just a week ago held its first election. I would love to see this idea spread to adjacent sims or even move to adjacent private islands in the future. I believe the trick in making such a system work, however, is that the Lindens must recognize the government. That is, we must have an agreement that the Lindens will enforce our decisions (banning, fining, group hugging), provided we show evidence that we are acting fairly. If you're interested, contact the new leaders of the city. We have a whole new assembly that took over my, Kendra's, Talen's, and Pendari's position (now I'm selling pencils). ~Ulrika~

We have a rudimentary government standing. It's called common sense/courtesy. If one wishes to trod all over these, then I say throw 'em to the wolves. No apology forthcoming.

Lindon labs creates, mantanes, runs, and codes SL. You can make a group of people in SL to do what ever you want. BUT LL will always be in control of their product. So you will never have real power. Governments in the real world are created out of necessity. SL the same thing happens. Take a look at live help, or greeters. Nether required a government. All they took was community.

I definitely don't want a government in SL run by residents. Eugene, I suggest you speak to Ulrika about the project she is involved with.

You know what I did last night?
I logged into There.com for the first time in ages and had tons of FUN. I rode my buggy around, flew about the islands for a bit, then logged off.
Now why couldn't I just do that in Second Life?
Because it's rotting!
There is too much argument over money, terms of service, government and control, external sites, and not enough FUN in second Life.
I go in there these days for some FUN and all I see are sex events, piled so high I can swim in them, or classes about basic stuff like how to get dressed, or thousands upon thousands of 'dance meetups' or gamble events like spam Tringo that is all just about playing for cash.
Is that the sum total of Second Life? Are we all here just to make money!
Before it's too late, we should get together and have a car race, or do an explore of the sims, or something fun. We have the metaverse, it's just being used as a huge dirty flea market right now, so I ended up going to There were I could have fun for a bit.
How can we bring the fun back into Second Life?
***
I forgot to mention, it doesn't help that the lag is so bad everywhere now, about 40% of the time if I press the forward arrow key, I have to wait about a second and a half before my avatar jerks forward a bit. That's no fun.

Yeah, great idea. We already allow stifling power junkies to control our real lives might as well get then ruining our fantasy world as well. Go join the Neuroticberg Project or whatever it's called and live in peer controlled bliss.
