Do you think the clubs in SL make loadsa money for all the effort or not? If not why do so many clubs open up? Not really sure how they would be making profits other than the paltry dwell and possibly promise of a dwellopers award? Why do they do it? Judging by a lot of the ones I see, because its easy to throw up a simplistic build, throw in a few generic scripts and call it a club, and hope people will come. Btw - I said a lot - not all. I've seen at least one impressive club in SL in my time ![]() _____________________

I think for the most part clubs loose money. Mine did anyway lol. Once you've hired a DJ and given away some free money your out of pocket. The bigger clubs sometimes have their own DJs or DJs open clubs of their own which helps. But all in all your lucky to break even.

I doubt many clubs if any are making money, though I feel they have no one to blame but themselves. I've said this before elsewhere, and I'll keep saying it until maybe it starts to sink in with club owners... someone who pays $4usd a month to GOM could afford a $32 cover charge every single day. If I ran a club and my regular patrons didn't feel my efforts were worth the cost of two candybars a week, I'd throw their asses out

Hrm I have no idea.
An interesting question though ... I suppose the only way to find out is to build one. So be it. Look for my new club, "Club Lag" which will be opening in a neighborhood near you soon! Muahahahaha. Anyone have 4-8k of mature land for sale, preferably in the middle of a residental area (dont want people to walk too far in order to get here, yes ...)? I'll run it for a few months. Constantly. And then let everyone know if it made any money. *giggle* |

I don't run a club to make money but to give it away. I have always been a generous person. I love to host the events and get to know people and make new friends. I do not try to impose upon my neighbors, but most are businesses anyhow. I will max out the range on my money ball so that almost everyone in the sim is in range to make something. Just the way I am and always will be.

I'm kinda with Della on this one. Though I've pretty much bailed out of the club biz, I gave away much more than I ever took in, probably a ratio of 3:1.

Clubs, or at least ours (Pure Passion) doesnt make any money at all, we lose (sorta) actually...
We pay dancers, Give out prize money, tips, Dj's etc... But we do it for three reasons... 1) fun 2) Socialize 3) It is our way of promoting Le Cadre which includes our shops and shops of other merchants _____________________

I lose money at my club, but it's not a dance club, and mainly only really busy during events, though we do get alot of folks that stop by and read in the library, or shop, or use the play areas.
If I worked at it, I might be able to break even. But if you are gonna really work at it 24/7, then I would say screw the club business and spend that time learning how to make clothing, animations, furniture, prefabs and scripting and make some REAL money. Of course I can't do hardly any of those things, and haven't taken the time to learn yet, so I'm usually poor as dirt and pay far too much for my tier. ![]() But folks like the club, and find it useful, so it's all good. _____________________

Do you think the clubs in SL make loadsa money for all the effort or not? If not why do so many clubs open up? Hi Heather ![]() The answer, from my research is 'no.' I spoke to quite a few club owners as I started to build mine. The end result after speaking with owners and a few dancer-friends, is that it just wasn't worth it for me so I tore it down. After the initial outlay you can run lean and mean but that means no customers besides a handful of friends who will tire of the club at some point. Once you offer incentives, pay a DJ and assorted other hangers-on, you're broke. Some people may feel that is worth it since the social and fraternal aspects are pretty cool but for me personally, it wasn't worth it. |

Two things to my mind stop most clubs making money:
First, IRL clubs make most of their money from the drinks, or more precisely from the mark-up on the drinks. Who actually buys drinks in a SL club on a regular basis? The cover charge to get in helps a bit too (and might help more in different cultures where drinking is not so prevelant) and none of them are present routinely in SL. Second, the amount of competition is phenomenal. I live in a town of about 100,000 inhabitants, much larger than SL, and yet we have only 4 nightclubs. I don't know how well they do, but I suspect they make money, but part of that is the lack of competition. Niche clubs, which can be smaller, but are also likely to have a regular client base, *might* work in SL and make money, or at least not make a loss. But I suspect the competition thing, just like for malls is what does it most of the time. If there were only 2 clubs, I suspect both of them would be full most of the time... |

Btw, quite amused that the vote is being lead by the 'hope they all burn down' option

But Eloise, is the hedonistic aspect not what drives many people to continue playing SL? Therefore there are far more potential clubbers here than in the real world, where people are far more focused on buying food, paying tax, getting Travelcards etc ... |

The XXX Club is now at the Parthenon in Raiden.
I seriously doubt that people make money with a club. I think the success or failure has to do with the people that are involved with the venture and the people that come out. You can have it loaded down with a million scripts and all the bells and whistles. That doesn't mean anything if its just not fun for people. Right now, I play SL for the social aspect and there is nothing worse than going to a club or social activity and having complete silence. No "room" chatter or welcoming or anything. |

I too find it funny that "Don't care i hate clubs i hope they all burn down" is in the lead.
I think it depends on the club as to whether their profits are fat or not. Club A may make less than Club B but Club A may make more than me, but Club B may make less than Land *pcacceptableterm* A. So while Club A could make a fat profit to me. To Land *pcacceptableterm* A they make consideribly less. Overall though I don't really care, but I don't nessisarily hope they all burn down, that would be impossible anyway. ![]() _____________________

Judging by these poll results, I see a future demand in the firebomb manufacturing industry.

A few let the drive for the top get out of hand and not everyone enjoys going. But, if clubs are so evil then why to people flock to them daily. Why are they at the top of the traffic list all the time. I dont know I guess if you dont like them. DONT GO. and if you do them have fun. as far as making money from them. lmao. |

I would guess that the employees of the clubs probably make some money, just how much is anyone's guess. Any employees out there that care to share any insight?

The question was "Do Clubs make big fat profits?" NO, they don't make big fat profits. Xxxx, I was merely stating that I don't have a club to make money that I have a club for the social aspect of the game. And no one is really saying clubs are evil, they are mentioning the lag and other aspects they dislike about clubs. As to why they are on the top of the traffic list is because everybody loves to socialize, it is a basic need. Everybody has a different level of need to socialize than others. So far your reply has nothing to do with the thread at all and therefore why troll mine. ![]() _____________________

I too find it funny that "Don't care i hate clubs i hope they all burn down" is in the lead. ...expecially if you compare them to the position of the most green dots concentrations on the grid. This leads to two options: 1: People say they would burn them down, but then go there and bring them traffic. 2: The forum is really (as someone said) the domain of a very vocal minority. Anyway i doubt myself most club owners make any money, and if they do it's due to other kind of service, not directly related with clubbing. _____________________
