Im a bit confused why a virtual copy of a an ORIGINAL piece of artwork for sale for any price counts as "Elitism"
Its their art they can sell it for what they want.
In the Real world the "Elitism" you sometimes see in art has nothing to do with the prices. Its a mindset.
Telling people what they can sell their Content for? Im not for that at all.

From: Pablicious Pessoa I came to Second Life not really knowing that there was a thriving art community here. When I found out, I was very excited, got caught up in that excitement and built my own art gallery. It has been an amazing time and the feedback I've received from people has been very good.
SL tends to be a very open and accepting place for everyone. Too bad all of our residents don't understand how this works. *coughcough From: Pablicious Pessoa The concept of limited editions and originals is just plain stupid and it is a cheesy way for you people to try and rob other people of money for a texture on a prim.
According to dictionary.com: rob 1. to take something from (someone) by unlawful force or threat of violence; steal from. 2. to deprive (someone) of some right or something legally due: they robbed her of her inheritance. 3. to plunder or rifle (a house, a shop, etc.) 4. to deprive of something unjustly or injuriously Care to tell me how you think SL artists are robbing people? I pay them the money they are asking for their art...I get their art...I'm happy, they are happy. The only person unhappy is YOU... I know when I'm shopping for art that I'm buying a texture on a prim. It's not like some big secret and when I get it back to my island, I pull it out, shocked and amazed that someone had the audacity to sell me just a prim with their beautiful art on it! How dare them. From: Pablicious Pessoa I just expected better integrity from artists who might want to try and do something different in Second Life and not repeat the same bullshit patterns of the real world.
I think you just want everyone to be and think JUST like you. *tsk tsk From: Pablicious Pessoa SO HOW CAN YOU ALL JUSTIFY YOUR HIGH PRICES?!?!?!?
How the hell can you justify what YOU charge?! Do you really think your art is so bad you need to charge less than a dollar for it?! I wouldn't even sell my childhood art for a buck, that's insane. From: Pablicious Pessoa I am also sick of artists who A. take themselves too seriously and B. claim that they are the best or whatever nonsense they want to spew out about how great they are. Why can't people just post a notice explaining what their work is about? I do not care about you, the artist. I only care about your work. If your work appeals to me, then maybe I might give a shit about you. But, I certainly don't want to hear about whether or not you are a RL artist in SL (trust me, 90% of us are so it anit unique!) or what school you graduated from or what organization or magazine likes to kiss your ass in the real world.
You're WAY too bitter. Grow up. From: Pablicious Pessoa Only in the visual art world do we have this kind of elitism. I hang out with DJs and musicians in SL and NONE of them talk about who is better than who or how great they are. They play their music and people enjoy it (or not). It is so much more laid back than this Art & Artists community where I am pummeled on a daily basis with mostly self-centered notices and contests. I go to gallery after gallery and you're all like lemmings charging outrageous fees for your art. It has gotten to the point where notices have become trivial and I just don't care anymore. Why do I want to go to another gallery where the owner has some crack-pot idea in the back of their head that they are going to get rich in SL through their art? Why do I want to support that greediness? Why would I even want to consort with those kinds of people? WHERE ARE THE REAL UNDERGROUND ARTISTS?!?!?!? There...I'm done. We are not allowed to discuss anything with each other in Second Life because of the analness of most people in this group concerning IMs. This web site hardly gets visited so not many people will read this. But I hope I do reach some of you out there who understand where I'm coming from. I was naive and thought SL would be some kind of artists Utopian dream but what I've found is the same old art elitism that pervades the real world so completely and it has been the most disheartening thing about Second Life to date.
If you hate it here in SL so much, leave. You've stated in your post you don't give a shit about any artist here in SL, so why should we give a shit about you or your stupid reasons for hating SL?

Putting my cynical head on for the moment, his post here was to prime the market for another one where he announced all his art is now free, and to please checkout the other galleries in the area while there.. So just a theatrical way to announce he's going to be using his art as loss leaders for the other galleries I guess. Seems to me he'd have got a better response without the theatrics..

Although I love a good suspense novel or conspiracy theory, sadly, I do not think this post is either of the two. He is serious. He is bitter. He is ranting. We are made to feel guilty about charging L1000 for a piece of original (made and sold by the creator) artwork--but when it boils down, the hours spent creating are sourly paid hours. A lot of us can easily make 30+ USD \hr in RL...why would we sell an original logo, print, painting for the equivalent of $5 USD? Yes, it is true that I cringe at the scripter who dare charge me L10,000 for a simple script that they either already had, or coded in less than an hour. Buuuuuut...clean code can be worth it. Just like an 'original' piece hanging in your office might be as well. We have to find a balance--however, you must also never forget to shop around. There are whiz kids out there charging very little for their quality work. Like me! I'm kidding....sheesh.

"How can you justify L$3000 for this?"
I once heard this answer at a store and fell in love with it.
"Because I own it and you don't."
----------
I *LIKE* having exclusive items. I'll pay more for them, if I'm the only one walking out of your store with one, and don't see another 49 people walking out with the same item.
Demanding that everyone cut their prices so they can flood the market with low-priced, cloned "be like everyone else" artwork? No thanks.
You do business like Anshe does.
I don't buy from her, either.

I am a sensitive artist. Nobody understands me because I am so deep. In my work I make allusions to books that nobody else has read, Music that nobody else has heard, And art that nobody else has seen. I can't help it Because I am so much more intelligent And well-rounded Than everyone who surrounds me. I stopped watching tv when I was six months old Because it was so boring and stupid And started reading books And going to recitals And art galleries. I don't go to recitals anymore Because my hearing is too sensitive And I don't go to art galleries anymore Because there are people there And I can't deal with people Because they don't understand me. I stay home Reading books that are beneath me, And working on my work, Which no one understands I am sensitive... I am a sensitive artist -- King Missile 1987

Nice post Malachi. I enjoyed reading that. The author/subject is a bit cavalier, but nonetheless, bells ring true, and the material is quality.

The song is so much better with the dischordant, poorly timed backing tracks and the obligato backround vocals ranting in a P. T. Gumby voice: "Sensitive! I ... am Sensitive! I am a Sensitive artist!". Seek it out. To round out the offering, I submit: Jesus was way cool Everybody liked Jesus Everybody wanted to hang out with him Anything he wanted to do, he did He turned water into wine And if he wanted to He could have turned wheat into marijuana Or sugar into cocaine Or vitamin pills into amphetamines He walked on the water And swam on the land He would tell these stories And people would listen He was really cool If you were blind or lame You just went to Jesus And he would put his hands on you And you would be healed That's so cool He could've played guitar better than Hendrix He could've told the future He could've baked the most delicious cake in the world He could've scored more goals than Wayne Gretzky He could've danced better than Barishnikov Jesus could have been funnier than any comedian you can think of Jesus was way cool He told people to eat his body and drink his blood That's so cool Jesus was so cool But then some people got jealous of how cool he was So they killed him But then he rose from the dead He rose from the dead, danced around Then went up to heaven I mean, that's so cool Jesus was way cool No wonder there are so many Christians
