the greatest gift we ever gave the French was liberation in 1944
France did not have a "un-free" regime before being occupied- while this liberation was a great thing ( and also militarily necessary to defeat Germany) - its not really part of the discussion on the foundations of freedom.
Going back in the thread the original point I was disagreeing with - It was stated that it becuase of France that America has its concepts of Freedom - notably a the symbol of the Statue of Liberty.
The liberation of France of course Is long after the statue of Liberty so has very little bearing on who inspired who towards freedom in the early days of either the American or the French Republics.
In reality - The leading Philosophical / Political Thinkers of the day had been arguing for years towards the creation of the sort of libertarian political system that the United States adopted.
One of the prominent ones was the Frenchman , Voltaire - who ironicaly spoke out against the evils in the French system of the mid 18th century (the same one who helped us beat England in the Revolution.)
The movement towards political freedom and empowerment of the common person towards equality and liberty has been / continues to be much bigger than any one country.
The American revolution and the imposition of a Country that holds Liberty as an Ideal was a shining moment , of course. And the Statue of Liberty (100+ years later) is a good symbol of that.
Its just that the history of the relationship between France and the US in this cuase are more mutually benifitial than any owing the other its existance.
