I trust
Nature's First Law.I distrust anything Memorex, ESPECIALLY recordable media (their audiotapes were often too tightly wound, their CD's seem to have random crappy ones, and... ugh. Just no.).
If I intend to spend a lot of money on electronics, especially sound-related, I will look at Sony first. I absolutely will not buy a cd player that isn't Sony (I haven't had one malfunction yet, compared to every other one I've owned)--this includes in pc's.
The big exception to my Sony-First electronics policy is in gaming; I will look at Nintendo first and Sony second (with Microsoft falling somewhere behind PC for me

)-- this is because of content, not performance.
For computers, I WILL NOT buy a brand name. Such overpriced and buggy crap, especially the two Compaqs my family has had. I buy from
newegg or
mwave for parts. My friends and girlfriend are all really happy with
cyberpowerinc for prebuilt computers.
For body care, I'll look at
Lush before competitors.
For shoe seller, I've been impressed with the ease, speed, and price of
zappos.
The King James bible is so much cooler, crazier sounding, and angering than the other ones.
For clothing: I'm quick to remove or black out the labels from all of my clothing. I would buy from
American Apparel because they care about their workers and don't resort to using poorly paid foreign workers, but I already spend a lot of money on exotic food and herbs so I usually can't budget it. I rarely buy new clothes, though, so it's not a big deal.
For music stores:
AMOEBA can't be beat.
Now for mass media:
Book brands... I dunno, maybe Feral House? }:> I'm not really particular about publishers.
For lifestyle branding through magazines, I prefer
Adbusters.
For lifestyle branding through television, I prefer
PBSFor lifestyle branding through radio, I prefer
KCRW.
For Internet lifestyle, Second Life.

For newspapers... I will not touch or smell newsprint. Icky.
