Mercury Venus Earth Mars Jupiter Saturn Uranus Neptune Pluto "Xena" Charon Ceres.

Kinda messy situation. Kids are getting confused :D

I don't have enough room on the ceiling in the bonus room for the extra stickers for the new planets :(

I wish they would make up their bloody minds. It was only on Monday that the BBC reported they were going to demote Pluto to non planet status. Well, on Monday and every few months since it was discovered :p

Okay, so under the new rules, Pluto & Charon would switch from planet & moon to "double planet" since their pivot point is inbetween the two of them. Well, technically, this is true for ALL orbital relationships. Our moon, for example, causes our Earth to spiral across its solar orbital path as the moon circles around and pulls on the Earth in a slightly different direction each day. Does this make us a "double planet" too?

The sun gets pulled around to wobble by all the planets, most notably by Jupiter. Does this mean we should come up with some new definition of planets and stars to say Jupiter and the sun are a "double starlet"?

Come on, astronomers. Okay, call some of those other things planets if you want (personally I love the idea of adding some new ones), but moons are moons, and Charon is definitely a moon. So it makes Pluto wobble, so what?

Absolute madness.

The inclusion of Ceres will stir up the asteroid situation.

The naming of Charon baffles me; does that make Pluto/Charon a double planet? If so, what constitutes a double planet, and what constitutes planet/satellite system?

The size/roundness definition will be amusing, too. We cannot determine those properties for the bulk of KBO's, so expect the solar system to be ever growing lol.

The term 'pluton' is being considered as a word to define these non-classical planets, a word that is already used to mean something else in geology, so more confusion will result here, too.

This morning, I was speaking to the author of a popular 'teach yourself planets' type book, and he believes this is more motivated by science-to-media communication than anything else. He wasn't too pleased about the prospect of a rewrite either heh.

Exactly, it's craaazzzyyyyy.

The center of mass of the Pluto-Charon system is outside of Pluto.

But the Moon is much larger relative to Earth than any of the others; and personally, I like the idea that the Earth and Moon are a double planet system!

AFAIK, there is no universal definition of what is a planet. Pluto may be demoted or other objects may be included once a set definition is made. The great debate seems to be based in part that there are larger objects than Pluto which are closer and more planet like which are not currently classified as planets.

Well that is what this is all about, coming to a universal definition. The nomenclature has been debated since the discovery of more and more KBOs since the early 90s.

Whatever the astronomers finally decide, I think Xena should be considered the enemy planet.

Its obiviously the enemy planet. All the cooler planets get to sit near the sun, and the sun says "Xena" has cooties and smelly feet. That is why its the furthest one out, sitting at the solar system's "nerd table". :D

"A planet in Earth's solar system beyond the orbit of Pluto. Rupert was named Persephone, but nicknamed Rupert after "some astronomer's parrot." It was eventually settled by the grebulons."

do we actually have to acknowledge these new planets at parties or can we ignore them and hope they go away?
