Choo Choo - don't know where that came from?!? Fred! George? Boo Boo....OK apparently I'm not any better naming a bird than I am naming dogs.... I had a Chinese Sharpi named Jelly.... if that tells you anything.

he was wise to burry his face in your hair and get you to take him home. I vote for Aristotle. Good strong avian name.

for a bird a 2 syllable name with k or t in it isn't bad. they seem to pick up on the sounds well. that being said, i have one that sort of named herself screech. (she screeched a lot because she was in a room away from everyone else while she was injured. i kept saying 'ok screech, cool it,' and she decided she liked it, and me, and kept both).
8D how old is the lil bird? the coloring isn't really indicative of gender unless the parents' colors (pearl feathering is sexlinked) or the age of the bird is known (males tend to lose a lot of the pearling and get a brighter looking face after their first molt). if the bird is over 6 months then the color may mean something. sounds like you got a fairly ignorant sales- person the second time 8( |

Name him Profoky Ulrika Klein.
I just want to see what that would do to it. ![]() _____________________

Thanks for all the suggestions, everyone. Here are my thoughts on the great list we've got so far:
Thanks again, everyone. Pretty good shortlist so far, I think, but nothing seems quite right yet. I know that perfect name is out there. Keep 'em coming. And thanks for the nice birthday wish, Milady. ![]() _____________________

Many thanks to those who answered my questions in my previous cockatiel thread. Now that I've got my little buddy, I need to name him. As we're still not sure if he's actually a he, a unisex name will have to do. Anyone have any ideas? ![]() Is that the same little guy you were talking about, the one the other birds were pecking at? He's adorable... call him Peckums. _____________________

Is that the same little guy you were talking about, the one the other birds were pecking at? He's adorable... call him Peckums. Yup, that's the guy. And he's been getting steadily more adorable all day. I was supposed to leave him mostly alone the first two days to let him get used to his new surroundings, but after seeing him looking so bored, peering out of the mostly covered cage for the past 8 hours or so, I finally couldn't resist the urge to take him out and play with him. I took him out of the cage, and at first he just stood on my hand, kind of shaking a little bit. Gradually, he worked up the courage to walk up my arm, and onto my chest, where he went to work tugging at the buttons on my shirt. Eventually, I picked him up again, this time with my other hand, and he just sat on my finger for a good long time, bobbing his head up and down, whistling every so often. He wasn't going anywhere. There was really nothing I could do, but get back to work, and type with him right on my finger. He couldn't have cared less. He just kept on sitting there. Finally I decided to put him back in the cage, and man, did he get mad at me. He just paced back and forth, very quickly across the front of the cage, staring at me intently the whole time. Oh boy. I was in for it now. So, stupid me, I took him out again. This time we had fun playing a little tug of war with some papers. I fed him some seeds from my hand, which he seemed to throughly enjoy (and I'm pretty sure he got a little chuckle out of spitting the shells at me. That little guy can hurl 'em). After this bit of play, he actually went to sleep on my finger. That was cool (even if not altogether exciting). I sat here watching a video on my PC while he slept contently. When he woke up, his behavior was a little different than it's been before. He lets me pet him now. That's definitely something new. Although he seemed to delight in walking all over me from the start, he never seemed to like to be touched. He'd always shy away, or try to push your hand away with his little foot. I had been assuming this was because of the abuse he had suffered at the hands of the other birds in the store. Now, however, he doesn't seem to mind at all. I was even able to cup my hand around him and give him a little hug. This is awesome. He's now back in the cage, and although he threw another little tantrum immediately after going in, he did settle down after a few minutes, and he started playing with one of his toys. I did discover right after putting him back that he had pooped on me twice, once on each leg. Suprisingly, I don't really care though. I was really worred that that would freak me out, but it hasn't. It's tiny, and it cleans up easily enough. So, experienced bird owners, how am I doing so far? It seems to me things couldn't be going better, but I am a little worried may be I took him out too soon. Any thoughts? _____________________

So, experienced bird owners, how am I doing so far? It seems to me things couldn't be going better, but I am a little worried may be I took him out too soon. Any thoughts? Sounds like everything's great! That's good that you're giving him the attention he needs, yet set the rules early that sometimes he's on his own so he'll learn to play with his toys. The key is to keep the attention level consistant- some new bird owners shower their birds with constant attention when they first get the bird, then blow him off once the novelty wears off, leaving the bird lonely and unhappy. Some other things to keep in mind... When he's in the cage it's normal for him to squawk for you. In the wild that's how they keep track of the flock. Remember he's not trying to drive you crazy, he's just being sociable. When he's young is the best time to get him used to a wide variety of foods. Fresh veggies (No avocadoes, eggplant, rhubarb, uncooked lima beans, fruit seeds, chocolate), pasta, etc. When they're older they're more suspicious of new stuff. Also remember not to let him chew on your fingers. Nibbling like he's grooming you is ok, but if he starts chewing on you divert him with a toy. That little beak gets pretty strong as they mature and you don't want to become his favorate chew toy ![]() |

sounds great chosen 8D
i completely agree with olympia, introduce the new foods soon. tiels are extra fussy. one thing that may help some is the monkey see monkey do routine. i swear if my bf drank gasoline some of my birds would want to do it too. expect to have to introduce stuff repeatedly and try different formats (cooked, raw, chopped, whole etc) also, yes, they will talk to you when in the cage. in my experience they go thru a pesky puppy stage where they are extra whiny, and boys tend to be a lot noisier than girls. as he comes to trust you he'll probably let you handle him even more closely. some of my birds i can turn upside down and give tummy kisses, although tiels seldom like that kind of foolishness. hope you have a ton of fun. a good tiel is a truly wondeful pet. 8D -l. |

Macaroni.
Such a cute little guy, I am glad you got him. If he is willing to come out of the cage with you, that is good. I think you will be great friends with him. What ever you name him, make sure you REALLY like the name. Because if he learns to talk, he may repeat it over and over again. I have a cockatiel too...and he's a GOOD BOY. I should know, he told me at least 50 times today! |

avocados can be toxic to birds.
i have heard of birds that eat it with no problems but i just read of a bird dying from it just recently. dunno if it's not all avocados, not all birds, maybe the peel, or what, but better to avoid it. |
