A television documentary producer is defending a special set to air this weekend, which views the Holocaust and other deadly events as consequences of Charles Darwin's theory of evolution and its inevitable social impact. The documentary titled Darwin's Deadly Legacy premieres on Dr. D. James Kennedy's Coral Ridge Hour on August 26 and 27. The program features 14 scholars, scientists, and authors who discuss and outline the historical and contemporary effects of evolution on society.

The documentary's producer, Jerry Newcombe, says it is important for Christians in particular to understand the social impact of Darwin's theory. ""Ideas have consequences," he explains, "and evolution lays at the root of so many different factors of our culture. We deal with some of those in the special, such as the school violence and the hopelessness among some young people today."

[snip]

Darwin's Deadly Legacy even connects evolutionary theory to Adolph Hitler's policies during his Third Reich. The documentary makes the case that the Holocaust can be linked to efforts by the German dictator to speed up the evolutionary process, as he understood it.

This supposition has drawn criticism from the Jewish group, the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), which has blasted the documentary and called it "an outrageous and shoddy attempt ... to trivialize the horrors of the Holocaust."

I'd say the anti-defamation league is way off the mark. It isn't intended to trivialize the holocaust. It's an obvious attempt to blame the holocaust on Darwin. Three cheers for religious extremism. :p

OMFG, thats just insane. Its like blaming pencils for death because someone stabbed someone with one.

I blame it on the Flying Spaghetti Monster not getting enough parmesan cheese in his diet.

"... case that the Holocaust can be linked to efforts by the German dictator to speed up the evolutionary process, as he understood it."

This is what happens when people who don't really understand evolution but think they do get into a position where they have power over other people. This should be a lesson never to let that happen ever again.

You big anti-semite, you.

Six million innocent lives. Think about that next time you go trolling off the back of a genocidal dictator.

There's probably some truth to that, but using it as a reason to discount evolutionary theory is unbelievably moronic. If the same logic were applied to religion then they'd have to argue that no one should believe in god because belief in god has so often been used to justify genocide.

Again, I'd like to remind you that these people do not constitute religion as a whole. But yes, it's moronic logic either way.

Absolutely, but I'm afraid that people like this do constitute a disturbingly large percentage of religious people. Of course I find any percentage of people who think that way disturbing.

lol, when almost 50% of americans believe the rapture will happen in their lifetime, its doesn't really help progress for the future.

Global warming? Ah screw it, God will come and take us all to heaven before that could happen.

It's a terrible thing, indeed. But no worse than the 15 million innocent babies killed by elective abortion in the USA over the last 10 years.

Actually, yes it is.

Those babies weren't tortured, starved, gassed, experimented on, forced to dig their own grave, etc.

They're not "innocent babies" or "holy love children" or "blessed magic wonder bundles". For procedures performed in the first two trimesters, it's simply a tiny piece of tissue.

Months, not trimesters, by month three they have a brain and spine, organs and limbs. I think most would agree this qualifies as a human. I'm pro choice all the way, but a moderate. I think most americans would agree we shouldn't be performing abortions after 8 weeks unless the mother's life is in danger or the fetus is seriously deformed and has a minimal chance of survival.

On the subject of the orginal post...

A good friend of mine has a rather stress free way of relating the the whole anti-evolution crowd. She says don't worry about them. They are obviously ignorant and choose to be so. They aren't doctors or scientists, and there kids will not grow up to be doctors or scientists. They will be inconsequential to the future of the country because they choose ignorance over education and therefore will accomplish little in society.

and they consistently lose, as they did in Pennsylvania recently. Most americans are smart enough to seperate faith from fact. The radical minority who keep attempting to force their faith into public education and law have lost historically and will continue to lose. We have the constitution on our side.

True so far. But if the radical minority had their way, their views would be taught to the next generation.

It is truly scary that as the 21st century unfolds and biotechnology becomes the new frontier, so many in the US base their belief in this subject on what some nomads living in tents wrote a few thousand years ago.

Partial birth abortion, while terrible, is a tiny fraction of that 15 million figure Kevn was quoting.

Even being as vehemently pro choice as I am, I would accept legislation that banned it in all but the most extreme cases where the mother's life was in imminent danger or the child was so deformed that any quality of life was unlikely. Ultimately this issue will require some compromise.
