It is fascinating to see them erode expectations of just being left alone and enjoying the game without worrying about being observed and having your in game activity compiled and handed out to any and all takers.
"8.2 Linden Observation. You acknowledge and agree that Linden, in its sole discretion, may track, record, observe or follow any and all of your interactions within the Service. Linden may share general, demographic, or aggregated information with third parties about our user base and Service usage, but that information will not include or be linked to any personal information without your consent."
When I log on, and off, is my business. And I would object to LL sharing that data.
Also interesting is they still dance around whether or not residents can do this to other residents. Which they do. Hey we're in the new America though, if you can possibly make money or gain notoriety doing it, and nobody explicitly tells you that you can't, it must be ok.
See you on the search lines at the subway.

The first part of it seems to be a way to deal with investigating conflicts, potential cheat/bug abusers, etc. Dunno.
I think the 2nd part is more for marketing and possibly "marketing" the game (or a future version) to potential investors. That way the investors know the consumer market they are dealing with.
I think its more LL covering their bases than it is any big brother government action. And yes, I feel it IS LL business when we all log in or out and how long we play and other things. How else can they tune their business/techology or market it without some of this data? Sure I can see the possibility for abuse but hey, if something is that important dont spout it out in a chat program across the internet.

I'm always surprised when someone posts something from the TOS legal mumbo jumbo and says "OMG LL CAN DELETE YOUR ACCOUNT!!!!1111" or the like.
We were actually discussing privacy with Philip this weekend at State of Play - Philip and Phoenix & crew made it abundantly clear that user privacy is extremely important and the only time they look is during an abuse report.

I think that is the part that is being objected to. I would imagine that the data they are talking about is the same data that poplulates the front page. There are other parts of the TOS that are not to my liking, but this seems very standard in the industry.

I don't see a problem with aggregate data and performance analysis being shared with everyone. Complaining like that is like me pissing my pants and shrieking that Criminal Philip should be ashamed for counting up the number of people using his service and telling people what the number is. WTF DO YOU THINK YOU'RE DOING, PHILIP-MAN? WHO GAVE THE RIGHT TO COUNT MY PRESENCE?! Come on, now. Let's flip out about something that's worth flipping out about.

Tcoz - I think you're OK - they will not be sharing any specific information about you or your activities without your approval: "Linden may share general, demographic, or aggregated information with third parties about our user base and Service usage, but that information will not include or be linked to any personal information without your consent.'

Hello, Tcoz, you might want to take a look at this thread Anyone using the Name2Key database? if you haven't already done so. It is repeatedly stated in that thread that the Sarendale Parvenu account is run by the same person who operates the Tcos Bach account. The moderator deleted the names in response to my bad post reports but left the bulk of the posts intact. I bet the way some stores track a person's position as they move through the store using the store's discount card doesn't appeal to you much.

Based on every multi-user system I've ever been on, every single on of them has had a similar clause. Nothing about that statement is new or even unique. - Newfie

I remember when Tcoz was working on his game in the sandbox. I'd ask what it was, and get no reply. He also would fence off his working area, sealing it all with darkened hastily placed prims, so nobody could bother him. I wasn't offended, just curious - but now it is starting to fit together, mentally, this displayed mindset.
I just sense a lot of fear, and I wonder why that is. In an information age, all data will eventually be available, and DRM, privacy acts, or anything else is just doomed to failure.
Big-brother rants just seem paranoid and extremist to me. Sure, everyone can get my data, but you know what? In all likelyhood without trying too hard - I could get yours, too. Anything truly worthwhile is encrypted anyway. But even then, keys can be obtained, secrets divulged.
Social hacks occur all the time, automated hacks via trojans/viruses/rootkits are commonplace.
The only true illusion is that you have any privacy, actually. You don't. You never did.
The only real privacy at this point are the thoughts in your mind that you haven't verbalized or written down. And even there, progress is being made on intepreting the electrical signals in your brain and detecting states.
Its all going to be a floating slosh of data when we hit singularity anyway, but by then we'll probably not care too much.

Yes, I spend time in the sandbox. But it's getting difficult to walk there, what with all the holes from your heads.
FYI I fenced off my area because some idiot was griefing me...I then discovered it was a great way to test lighting. Interesting that your mind would turn that into a piece of some grander puzzle. Look to your own psyche, such as it is.
Ah well, I'm evidently still good for two or three pages, even after all this time. And I find that quite amusing. Makes the monthly fee worth it. Oh, now you're uncertain what to do next, aren't you? Well, lemme help with that...
/flip.
Go ahead, gimme a reason to hit 1000. I'm sure you will, as ya'll are SO easy to provoke.
You need me. Face it.
And of course...you are dismissed.
