The young man is being held as a juvenile in the slaying of Pamela Vitale, wife of lawyer and television pundit Daniel Horowitz. Police say he apparently acted alone.
Horowitz found Vitale's body when he returned to a trailer the couple shared while they built a dream estate on a hilltop in affluent Lafayette, east of Oakland.
Authorities said Vitale, 52, was bludgeoned by a strip of crown molding and fought with her killer. (See video about the arrest -- 4:35)
A Gothic cross was carved into her back. That symbol may be a key link to the suspect.
"He was just really a Gothic kid, and everyone knew who he was just because of his apparel. When you heard the name, you were just like, 'Oh, that kid,' " a classmate told CNN.
"He just definitely stood out in front of anybody in the school," the classmate added. "When he walked by, everybody talked about him -- like, he definitely didn't blend in."
Authorities would not identify the 16-year-old, and CNN is not naming him because of his age. But news outlets in the San Francisco Bay area widely publicized his name after his arrest late Wednesday.
Former classmates told The Associated Press that the teenager drew a pentagram on the ground at school, telling other students he was reading from the book of Satan.
They described him to the wire service as a quiet student at Acalanes High School in Lafayette, where he stood out because of his attire.
"He was really Gothic, always wore a long, dark jacket," Kevin Etheridge, 16, told the AP. "He'd hang out with a few kids, but he was pretty quiet, pretty much to himself."
Another student remembered him in junior high school drawing a pentagram on the ground with chalk and dancing around it with other students.
"He told people the book that he was carrying and reading from was the book of Satan," Keith Kingon told the AP.
The San Francisco Chronicle, citing an unidentified law enforcement source, reported that investigators believe the killing was related to a scheme that involved using stolen credit card numbers to fund a marijuana-growing operation.
The Chronicle's source said the boy had ordered equipment for the operation and mistakenly thought the supplies were delivered to Horowitz and Vitale's home, the newspaper reported on its Web site.
The teen went there Saturday looking for the equipment and got in a fight with Vitale, striking her dozens of times in the head with a piece of molding that was left behind at the scene, according to the Chronicle's source.
The boy, who lived on a remote canyon road down the hill from the estate, had scratches on his arms and legs from a fight, the newspaper reported.
A man at the house where the suspect lived declined to comment Thursday as goats and chickens wandered around the property. A potbelly stove, a bathtub and dozens of baseballs littered the yard, the AP reported.
If the boy is convicted of murder as an adult, he would face up to life in prison. If convicted as a juvenile, he would be freed on his 25th birthday. He is too young to face the death penalty.
God I hate how the news tends to sensationalize everything. A stupid kid ends up pulling a retarded stunt, such as killing someone, and the press goes out to sensationalize every little mundane aspect of this person's life, such as how they dress, in the process villianizing people that dress in the same way, even though they're nothing like this asstard that committed this heinous crime. It was like this when Columbine happened too. I got this nice leather trenchcoat that I wear when it's cold out. After Columbine, people started looking at me funny and the dean of the junior college I attended at the time pulled me into the office giving me the third degree for two hours all because I wore a certain piece of clothing. I haven't been a goth for like seven years now. I just like my trench. It's nice and warm in the winter. It keeps me relatively dry when it rains. And it looks just too damn snazzy. And I shouldn't be put under suspicion for wearing it. Also... what the fuck is up with interviewing the kids' classmates? I mean was it really necessary to put in "OMG HE WAS DIFFERENT FROM US" in there? Sure, give people further ammo to treat kids that stand out from the rest or just don't fit in like some sorta criminals because of the actions of one fucktard.

They must have picked a few non-goth kids to interview, because there are lots of goth kids in the area. I went to school with many goth kids and none of them were as deranged as this kid is.
Hopefully, people will be more intelligent than to draw some conclusion that all goth kids are murderers.
But, I wouldn't call his actions a 'stupid stunt' it was murder.

I would have to agree, if he is guilty so be it, but stop dragging everyone else into it. I lead a gothic lifestyle.. I wear dark clothes, I listen to hard core music that would scare most of my daughter, Yes I said daughter's classmates parents. I have multile piercings and tatoos. Oh and did I mention my boyfriend does as well. But Guess what.. I am a productive member of society.. I am a stay at home mom, volunteer in the classroom once a week, help lead food drives, carpool, and drive from girls scout lessons to ballet lessons. My boyfriend, he is a security supervisor and we live in a very nice area. Why do you ask? Because we want the best for our children. Niether us nor any of our friends would EVER do these things this horriffic. It was ONE deranged person who commited these acts.
I just say STOP blaming a group for one person. You don't blame ALL doctors when one screws up royally and kills someone.. You don't blame all teachers because one teacher was ruthless and uncaring..
Just my two cents on it.

Obsession with death, violence, evil, the mysterious, and the occult. (Mysterious, isn't that a sum up of life itself?)
Concurrent drug, alcohol, and sexual activity. (*Runs to tell hubby, 'No more sex dear, it's a gesture of Satan!'*)
Reputation among peers as someone to be feared or catered to because of his/her personal power. (So much for wanting to be a Mistress...sigh)

Try to discover student's fundamental problems which he/she is trying unsuccessfully to solve with satanism. (It's only acne, it will disappear with age...no need to contact Satan.)
Offer better, more successful, and more constructive ways of solving those problems. (Here's a tube of Clearasil, it will help.)
Point out the destructiveness of satanic involvement and its ultimate spiritual and emotional bankruptcy. (Now this should be easy since they made it harder to go bankrupt.)
Involve parents or another responsible adult the student trusts if you can enlist their sensible cooperation. (Help him! Are you kidding me...that kid's crazy!)
Pray for the student, the family, the student's fundamental problems, and those who are encouraging the student's satanic involvement. (Hmmm...now this is a very good suggestion and I am sure it will really get things solved...NOT!)
Be a good role model with consistent Christian maturity -- show how Christians successfully meet life's challenges with the power of the Holy Spirit in their lives. (Wow...from the power of Satan to the power of the Holy Spirit! So I guess if you're not Christian you're kid is screwed huh?)
