Having played RL for almost forty years, and havign tried SL for over a year, I can say that RL is better than SL. There are more subscribers in RL (about 5 billion-more than any other game. And there are no subscription fees, though tier is very expensive it does come in a floating "pay as you use it basis that lets you scale up. Also the economy, while not perfectly stable, remains is a slight period of inflation, but hey, for all you capitalists..there is no geovernment stipend, you have to work to make money, or be area lucky person who inherits or has an easy job.

Competion is killer, and its hard to break inot new markets, but thye have mastered web on a prim, and oh, there are no prim limits for your builds. With a little hard work you can learn how to program, script, or build anything, and with a bit more effort you could even go inot avatar repair, or modification.

Its an a amazing world with plenty to do, even has a 12 year basic tutorial system, with advance tutotrial going on for years after.

There are plaenty of griefers though, and of o course the world is player run..so you have the usual player-politics and popularity contests. The player run gobvernments take a pretty strong stand on griefers, and if combat is what floats your boat, a number of player owned sims operate combat areas- the most popular game being low tech terrorist takes on high tech infantyman.

Of course RL recognizes that Combat isn't for everybody, and the the RL entertainement industry is well developed. In addition RL avatrs require a lot of maintenance, so really with a little work, you can create a whole life style for yourself.

And the physics engine is awesome..perhaps too much so..you can't fly, or jump over buildings at all. Also the number of avatar shapes are limited, but that is because the basic technology of the platform is way beyond cutting edge.

So sign up now and get your Free rl account. And I look forward to seeing you in world.

You forgot one of the best parts: Making new accounts.

I'd agree with you except for a few troubling points:

1. RL subscriptions are not infinite. Everybody gets banned at some point, and it's permanent.

2. There are no prim babies. RL babies poop, pee, throw up and cry really loud at the most inconvenient moments.

3. There are no alts. Don't listen to the Hindus.

4. RL griefers suck even worse than the SL variety. They will knock over your mailbox, vandalize your car, egg your house and steal your prims.

On the other hand, there are no prim limits in RL. So there's that.

Not only is the graphics better (NO LAAAAAG!!!). It's a 5-senses environment.

Trouble is that your avatar needs maintenance or it will get auto-banned or derezzed.

Also, there's no avatar flight and your avatar can get damaged from griefers or from falling.

Custom skinning your avatar costs a lot too. But those who can afford it can get really good skins.

Great physics engine, HAVOK doesn't hold a candle to it.

Oh ... and vehicles WORK ... most of the time.

Oh yeh? You haven't seen me before my first coffee in the morning.

Not to derail this thread but I read a really interesting article last year on the nature and limits of virtual reality. They compared the polygons per second rendered in Toy Story 1 versus Toy Story 2 (on the order of 10 or 20x greater) and then noted that in order to render reality you'd need graphics power 25,000 times what our current best computers can do (I think it was in the neighborhood of 80 billion polygons per second, but don't quote me).

I'm hoping to live to see Second Life 2, in another 10 years. Maybe by then HAVOK will be ancient history and they can just skip right over it.

That's a case of your avatar lagging, not the environment which unfortunately always runs unlagged.

And that's for ONE view and it's ray-traced. You will need two of that for one person (stereoscopic vision).

Hmmm .... imagine a ray-traced SL. Drooling yet?

So if my client lags, it's still lag, right? Except I can't pour black coffee onto my hard drive and still log on.

And tactile sensors attached to my body ... *shiver* It'll give a new meaning to clicking someone's Xcite parts. Are we ready for Xcite 2000? :)

Well your coffee will pour at unlagged speed, but since you're lagging you might not be able to move your cup to the right place in time ... and you might be too slow to step clear of the mess.

But getting the hot coffee spilled on your avatar should clear up the lag. Oh yes, baby will that *really* clear up the lag.

A major drawback though, is that if one is killed in a combat sim, one's account is cancelled instead of just being teleported home.

What does RL have that SL doesn't?
Well, more justice, less of a griefer problem, and a lot more diversity. Unfortunately it is a lot less secure and a lot more expensive to live in RL.

There's more justice, in that if you screw up and get yourself killed, you can't just come back under a new name, unless you work for the CIA, in which case dying is the least of your worries.

There's less of a griefer problem in RL, because I can't remember the last time anyone teleported out of prison, and for the serious griefers, once they're banned they never come back, ever.

As for the diversity, this is probably a good thing so long as you don't end up in a place where everyone hates 'your kind' of people.

As for security, it's unfortunately true that you can't simply teleport anyone who trespasses on your property back to their house. Nor can you use invisible force shields to stop people wandering through your house. It does have the advantage that, in RL, people cannot normally see through walls, though. Similarly, I've never been disconnected from my RL due to a giant self-replicating torus-monster.

Overall, my verdict : live in RL, work in RL, earn money in RL... and use SL for fun. :)

I tried that one before. You forgot to mention that the couples animations are way more fun.

I don't know...

The avatar appearance system of RL is way too cumbersome for me. I do my best, but you really need to spend a lot of time and money on it to get something decent. Next to that, there's some kind of horrible drift on the settings over time.

This bug, and a lot of others, have been known for several million, if not billion, years already, but it's almost impossible to get any bug report to the development team or have them even acknowledge your existence without going through a huge amount of effort.

The equivalent of Phil Linden in RL isn't so bad, but the self-appointed ResMods there who claim to carry out his will are terrible.

At least high-prim hair and blingtards don't add to lag. However shutting out the noise from neighboring parcels is an exercise in futility.

But have you seen some of the residential builds in RL? Bleh, cookie cutter houses and strip malls as far as you can see.

On the whole I find RL more reliable by far than SL. After all, when was the last time you logged on to RL and found it was down?

Wakes up, opens eyes - nothing... maybe a little sign floating in the void, 'Sorry, RL is closed to all except employees for essential maintenance' Doesn't happen, does it? Well, it hasn't happened to me.

At least the RL boss guy got it more or less right in beta, no need for all these dubious updates. AND it only took him seven days according to the records! Literally a world of difference.

Another big plus with RL is that graphics rendering is very good. On a clear day you can see 60 miles, rather than the 60 metres at which detail starts vanishing, along with smaller objects in SL lately.

Oh yeah, finally, you don't have to keep upgrading your hardware to play RL either!

I think when RL is down is when your (away) and having a dream you cant return from normally and marge simpson is shooting giant derezzer beams out of her hands...then coming straight for your house...

Ah, you miss the point... it takes 7 days to boot RL, and since there's no backup, when it does crash, the servers get reset and you don't remember it.
