Looks like people are having varied success with my testmy.net suggestion. I guess there's no such thing as a perfect test then. Tod, since you're getting the same results from both tests, I guess we can safely assume they're both acurate for you. Since others are getting different results, I guess there's no good way to know which is right, if any.

All I know is that I've been told by several people in the ISP business that testmy is what I should be using. Sorry if that caused me to overvalue it.

It appears to be a thorough test, but nothing can get around the problem of net congestion. While it will be accurate for some, it will be totally inaccurate for others. The best speedtest you can do is the one provided by your ISP, as it is a direct connection between you and them without the possible congestion.

Hmmm, little less than the 1.5Mb I'm paying for, but I never have any net problems. Occasionally network traffic completely stops for a few minutes in wee hours of the morning, as if a router somewhere is being reset. I guess I could bump to a higher speed, but I don't see how it would significantly help with SL if the client caps at 1000 kbps. And I'm not a big downloader... mostly web surfing and SL. Though, faster upload speeds would be nice, what with my store and all.

Testmy.net usually gives me download of around 7 mbps-7.5mbps and upload around 760k.

For accurate speed measurement, use the speed test provided by your ISP.

Of your connection yes, but that's actually a pretty useless figure isn't it ? unless you simply want to check your ISP isn't short changing you?

These tests provide a real world indication of the speed at which you receive data from online services given factors such as net congestion between you and them, though they'll inevitably be pretty variable given these factors.
