Sleep has refreshed me like the Refresh button on a webbrowser, and so, I say:

GOOD MORNING TO YOU!!! :D

My mind quickly flashes back to a time in the mid-nineties when Ashley MacIsaac was a fiddler, albeit an unorthodox one, but certainly not the lead singer of a rock band as he is today. Despite his missteps along the years, I will remember him, among other things, for having played an excellent performance on tracks like "Sleepy Maggie", a song which I woke up to a number of times. Particular to this thread, the album of Mr. MacIsaac's this track was on was titled:

Hi How Are You Today?

That carries a powerful statement. Or could.

Generally (and I generalize), when people ask this question, something comes off to me like it is a social ritual of sometype without much gravity. "Going through the motions" sort of saddens me, because when I personally ask such a thing, I like it to dig in deep, like a porpoise infiltrating a pod of killer whales. When I say it, I say it with conviction, the way a suicidal prisoner may bash his head against the bars of his cell.

There is a track by Dao Dezi, an offshoot of ambient techno enterprise Deep Forest, and it's titled "Hebrides". Like Ashley MacIsaac's mid-90s works, it combines a certain amount of electronic precision and synthesized beats along with traditional Celtic heritage. It's not an instrumental, though: it really is a song with a singer named Denez Prigent, and you don't have to understand the lyrics to enjoy it. It has a catchy melody, you can tap your foot along, and if you listen really closely, it sounds almost like the vocalist is wishing a good morning to himself. Some chorusing effects amplify this feel.

Ask: before you say good morning to anyone else, do you say it to yourself?

Think about that for a moment.

Along the Celtic thoughtline, I'm reminded of Braveheart starring Mel Gibson. One particularly notable quote from it is:

"Every man dies. Not every man really lives."

Change "man" to "avatar" and you clearly see what I'm getting at.

I'm very grateful to be here, because some people really don't have good mornings at all. Life—and Second Life, as an extension—can suck.

It is a miracle to me I'm typing these words out on some newfangled Microsoft device, on Internet. If you're reading these words, it's a miracle too. I know blind people, I know deaf people—heck, my ears are crippled with hyperacusis and it's been so long since I've heard a sweet tune the way only I can remember it in my head. But I've got a lot of blessings. I have my bag of marshmallows. I have a reasonably fast personal computer. I have heating during the winter. I have people I care a lot about, and who care about me. I'm beginning to understand love and some of the finer parts of the human experience. Even if I can only be an observer some of the time, living vicariously is better than not living at all.

And... I have Second Life. A way I can greet you in ways I normally couldn't offline. I can get rather flexible with gestures, and hopefully amusingly too, and infact I'm thinkin' of whippin' up some new customized ones. Maybe even a new word instead of "Hi", like the greeting equivalent of extolling "YAYZERAMA!" or laughing "RUR RUR RUR". (Knowing me, it'll prolly come to me in another crazy dream.) I know I don't have to shake your hand, but the body language of my avatar communicates something, and that's part of the truth in why I like to smile: I like to send a smile, and get one back in return.

I would like to say what an honor and a privilege it's been here in Second Life to be amongst you. And for that reason, what a truely good morning it is. :)

So PUT THEM ALL IN ONE THREAD!
And why should my good morning messages have to go in a thread someone else started? My good morning posts, and my good afternoon posts and my good evening posts and my good night posts are all sacred, special things, distinct from one another, and each deserves it's own thread! And so does everyone elses.

Being confined to a thread is no different than being confined to a forum, they are both constraints on the freedom of "Good <time period> posts everywhere".

Also why limit our good TimeUnit posts to the general forum? Don't the scripting tip and design and animation and land and economy and political science and on and on forums all deserve and need distinct messages of good cheer for every separate measurable unit of time?

Well enough of this. Have a nice instant.

My last thread is just GONE, I've checked back a few pages, gone to notices & well-wishes, at least yours still exists. But I think you're right, happy feel good threads have no place here, they're quickly buried or completely gone in a short amount of time.

Try starting it off with a hate-filled diatribe on dust mites or something.

well then we have a difference of opinion of what goes where

cause i believe saying good morning to fellow residents of SECOND LIFE is on topic in the general forum. since i am saying good morning to OTHER SECOND LIFE residents.

but no mater i will be sure to put it on topic in the future with some relevant second life material as torley was so nice enough to point out.

Just because a thread has SOMETHING to do with one topic doesn't mean it belongs there, its where it has the MOST to do with something.. "Good Morning" has far more to do with notices and well wishes, than it does with general second life topics..

As for the numbers being less, I think the people browsing the general forum are a lot less likely to want to see a post saying good morning, than the ones browsing notices and well wishes..

Not that I'm agaist posts saying good morning, just I think, they should be in the right place.. If I was LOOKING for a good morning thread, I'd look in notices and well wishes.

ya know i was once part of a very popular good morning thread in another online world and it did so much good i cant say how much.

it brought people together it made people feel good it made them laugh it brought cheer to almost every single person who read and posted to the thread.
and it was in the general topic forum.
if it were buried in a forum that no one reads and clearly the numbers on the general thread out weigh the numbers for the well wishes thread.
no one would see it the casual passer buy would not see it and not post to it.
the thread i was part of grew in strength as time went by with more and more people joining in all the time.
we encouraged new folks to join in, in the joy of the thread.

but as i can clearly see here there is no room here in this forum except in a place few visit for some good old fashion cheerfulness and positive attitude.

Nooooooo, only Torley can be popular when saying good morning here!!

I think you could put it in off topic, which is a highly popular and well read forum...I _think_ you could put it in there...and yah, it'd be a good thread :)

GOOD MORNING CRUCIAL :) (well here and now, it's afternoon...but eh, for my purposes, I've only been up 3 hours so it's still morning :P ) I hope you have a fabulous day and that your update and ability to get into SL is smooth and wonderful :)

Actually, technically, dust mites would go to off topic. Now, if it was a hate filled diatribe on dust mites attacking the grid...well then it could go here. :P
