Why are we the regular citizen of SL NOT ALLOWED TO tp to the NMC Campus???

There A LOT super talk and marketing about the NMC sim.

And wows about a movie made.. yes I agree it looks nice but to TP to that sim are not allowed..

I wonder why??

Wow, that *is* impressive.

If it's a pilot project of some sort, they're possibly restricting access so they can always be confident a certain population size can convene on the island on schedule? Focus groups, stakeholders, class attendees, etc...they've probably just cut off outside access entirely because there's no mechanism for giving their clients priority access on demand.

But a weekend open house or two sure would be nice!

They are working on a public version of the same sim, called "NMC public". I don't think it's open yet, but will be soon.

Can you explain why its ok to keep the general population of Second Life out of your project? Why must you make a public area for us?

I guess its rocking for the elite, but not the normal people of SL eh?

Cmon guys there are tons of closed sims w/ restricted access already on the grid. lLets be fair to both NMC and eSheep, lots of possable plausable reasons for not allowing access -maybe its not done yet, or gee maybe a non profit group actually needs two sims one for its membership to facilitate an in world space for meetings, projects, learning spaces etc, and one for public consumption.

Honestly that sounds like the case here, I am sure the public space will open soon and it will be available to check out and grok in its fullness.

At worst the only possable mistake was showing the film in the forums a bit to early. But c'mon guys since when do we take points off for enthusiasm. And with damn good reason, its a great film and great project, and I say kudos to Satch and the esheep crew.

Hi guys,

NMC Campus is a project of the New Media Consortium (www.nmc.org) - an organization of educators, researchers, and artists that look to expand the way technology is featured in education and the arts.

Among the many reasons for the existance of the campus, NMC is allowing their faculty members to use the sim for teaching either part or all of their classes - and I'm sure we could all understand how having a completely open sim might not work out so well for when classes are in session.

You'll see some people like Seifert as being in the NMC Campus group list because he was kind enough to donate artwork that is featured on the campus - as such he needed access to set it up.

Its not a matter of who is "elite" or who isn't, its trying to keep the sim used for its intended purpose. NMC was extremely generous in allowing ESC to recreate the island for the public in the form of NMC Public, a sim that the general population of SL will be able to visit and use without having to get an invitation to the NMC Campus group.

NMC Public is in its final stages - we had to do some minor contractual changes - but we're hoping to have it open to everyone sometime next week. If you have any other questions, please feel free to ask - we're all excited about bringing this project to the residents of SL, none more so than the NMC members themselves, who are all extremely excited to be a part of SL. Anyone with any land using it for any purpose has the right to lock you out for any reason. You can knock on the door and ask to be let in but no one has to let you. Do you call your next door neighbor in RL an elitist because he won't let you use his back yard? Same thing.

I think the fact they're working on a public sim is nice of them, something that should maybe be appreciated rather than demanded?

This, I have to disagree with. The NMC released the video on their blog, as they were excited and proud to show the video to their current membership and others who are following the project via the blog. I posted it to the machinima forum because as a community we are always eager to share finished pieces with each other.
