As the grid is down perhaps some of you might like to write letters in support of a teacher who has been suspended and is threatened with dismissal, for suggesting that his art students should take a life class.

You gotta be kidding me. This is outrageous. Just when I thought this country couldn't sink any lower, suspending a teacher for recommending the type of classes that have been going on for centuries.
I took my first figure drawing class with live nude models when I was 13 years old. Like all 13 yr olds, I was a horny little bastard, of course, but believe me, those classes were anything but sexually stimulating. I've taken hundreds of them since, and it's the same story every time. Whether it's a hot chick who looks like she just stepped out of the pages of playboy, or a fat hairy old man, it's all the same. Artistic study is artistic study, and I have yet to attend a class where any student (of any age) appears to be aroused by what's going on. It's just not that type of thing. Let those kids see decapatations on the news, but god forbid, they ever encounter a nipple and the world might end. Please. _____________________

when I was in high school, my friend paitned this amazing statue for the king and I. simply, it was amazing.. especially for her age and level of "trained" experience.
The administration made her paint over the nipples.. censor her hard work.. it was terrible. she quit artwork all together. anyways, posted this on my myspace bulletin.. ya'll should do the same (or wherever else you post stuff) |

Even as I find myself, very much to my dismay, affected in my reactions to these very things by the influence of the "culture" I grew up in, I realize intellectually how sick and depraved it really is, this love of violence and hatred of the body.

Sexuality and sexual desire are universal which makes it a very convenient human emotion to exploit. Making people ashamed of their sexuality is just as sexually exploitative as using scantily clad teens to market your wares. It's easy to convince people that they're bad and need to atone (by subjugating to some outside influence, or perhaps buying indulgances) if you criminalize the most innate human desire. Once they're subjugated you're going to want to use them to smite your enemies so it'd be a good idea to desensitize them to violence (like say, hanging witches in the town square, or showing a lot of crime dramas - bonus points if you make them afraid of "others" at the same time). _____________________

I remember an incident last year, my daughter was 13 at the time. One weekend she spent the night at a friend's house where they were allowed to sit up all night and watch a couple of old Nightmare on Elmstreet movies (remember Freddy Krueger). My daughter had a little trouble sleeping for a couple of nights but I hadn't ever told the woman she couldn't watch them so I couldn't really get upset at her for allowing it.
About two weeks later the same girl came to our house to spend the night and I took them out to rent movies too. It's easy entertainment, keeps the kids out of my hair.  The girls decided to rent Titanic because neither of them had seen it (among a few other girly comedies).The next day this woman calls me and just goes ballistic at me over the phone, yelling about how irresponsible it was for me to let them watch that movie with "that nude scene"! Having not actually seen the movie in ages myself it took me awhile to figure out the nude scene she was referring to was where the male character draws a sketch of the female character posing nude showing her from the waist up. Anyway in the end this woman who apparantly thought slasher movies are just fine for 13 yr olds decided that I was a terrible mother for allowing them to see a pair of naked breasts and that her daughter would never again be allowed to spend time in my home. I was completely flabergasted, I had no idea what to say. I honestly didn't know whether to laugh or yell back. I think I just ended up hanging up stunned. Of course a month later when she got tired of listening to her daughter complain she had no problem with sending her over to my house again, but this time with a written list of "rules". I just read something today that really really disturbed me. I'm sure many of you have seen the picture of the Vietnamese children running away from their village after a napalm attack. One little girl is naked. She had taken her clothes off because they were on fire. The guy who took the picture took her to the hospital immediately after taking the picture. Anyway... there is a warning at Wikipedia - with a footnote as to why:

Wow. I was an art student for a while (before I switched to engineering and yes that did do a number on my brain thank you very much) and I took oogobs of life drawing classes that involved nude models. There was nothing sexy or sensual about it. Frankly I was trying so hard to get everything right and to draw whatever in the allotted time that there was no room for anything sexual at all.

She is very cool, I've met her in Thunder Bay when she was doing a speech there. Very awesome lady. Deserves every merit she's earned since '96.
