Poor birdie It was very good of you to try and help it. Birds do not often recover from cat bites, even with immediate veterinary care. For everyone's future reference should you need to nurse an injured bird: Birds are flock creatures and tend to hide their illnesses and injuries. Therefore, if you ever have a bird that looks and/or acts sick or hurt...it will probably need professional care immediately and even then may not survive. Because if it has gotten to a point where it is showing illness or injury, it is very, very ill indeed.

From: Ekim Bienenstich Should of just let the cat finish the job! Like what I have been reading it is natural instinct for cats to pounce birds. Honestly I think you did more harm to the bird not letting the cat finish the job and letting the bird suffer through the night in pain until it died! At least the cat would of most likey killed it quicker! I just hope that you're not the only person around if I ever get attacked by a lion!

Oddly enough, part of my dream house (if I win the lottery or whatever) will be a birdbath in the backyard, very low to the ground, surrounded by shrubbery and plenty of birdfeed. Sort of a cat toy for my kitties.

Cats kill a lot more birds than people realize. Despite their "dosmestic" persona, they are quite efficient hunters, even when they do not need the food. http://chicagowildernessmag.org/issues/spring2005/catsandbirds.html

From: Zuzu Fassbinder They leave fewer remains? My dogs leave remains all over the place "for later". It's disgusting, just like avie sex and robots (but not robot avie sex).

Robot avie sex, on the other hand is rather mechanically dull. I had a cat that would wait for the catbirds (bluejays for those not raised in the southern US) to swoop for his fur (black and white cat, but fluffier than a persian) and he would jump up, twist around and try to pull them down. He usually caught 2 or 3 a week until they (mostly) learned which yards to avoid. Then it was 2 or 3 a month. Only brought me a 'present' once though. I let him finish it off and gave him some tuna. Really sweet cat for the most part.. even still nursed since he lost his mother at a young age.

My cat isnt allowed outside. So she sits at the patio door & "chirps" at the birds that land outside. She chatters like a lil' squirrel when the chipmunk is outside too!

From: Zapoteth Zaius Most sites seem to say that if the bird is badly injured to pick it up with a cloth or towel, put it in a dark box somewhere warm and not to attempt to give it food or water. And then to get in touch with a nearby animal/bird charity of some sort. This link might help. Best of luck! Well, I wish I knew that before my cat attacked a dove. We kept it in an open box in the house. The bird had a wound near the base of its throat, and it lived for about a day, but died right after having a drink of water. Cats got some free food shortly thereafter.

From: April Firefly I'm sorry for your bad experience. And I understand the whole thing cats need to go outside.
Go easy on me on this one. This is something that I've agonized over when I've seen friends let their cats out, particularly in the city.
Incident 1: Cat crossing the street, my sister driving me and her newborn daughter. She swerves and almost hits another car head on.
Incident 2: Walking my dogs, cat laying on the sidewalk. Big cat. I take them across the street before they have a chance to see the cat.
Incident 3: Dead cat in road. Well we know what happened there.
I have to have my animal on a leash at all times and I am always with them. Why are cats allowed to roam and cause inconveniences? Does the benefit outweigh the potential for harm? Don't you worry about what your cat could get into? I hear there was even AIDS spreading in the cat community, although I find this hard to believe, anyone verify this?
Just my thoughts. Hope the bird gets better. Uhm, have you ever tried to put a cat on a leash?

From: Devlin Gallant Uhm, have you ever tried to put a cat on a leash? They have special cat harnesses (don't put it around their neck, they'll hang themselves trying to get away). And you have to train them to use it, although I've never had the patience to do that. My cats are strictly indoors. Not because of what they might eat, but because of what might eat them (and me) namely fleas, ticks & etc.

No, but probably one of the many reasons I don't have a cat. If I had anything that was my responsibility, be it cat, dog, lion, alligator, child or whatever, I would want to make sure it was not loose on the world causing any type of harm. Why are cat owners absolved of this responsibility? If you obtain something for yourself, you should not expect the rest of the world to take responsibility or suffer the consequences of your actions. Just my thought. From: Devlin Gallant Uhm, have you ever tried to put a cat on a leash?

WOT?! Five pages and no religion or political flamefest about cats and their relevance to those topics? On topic - our cat is an indoors cat. There is a busy busy road about 75m out back, and I see way too many dead animals on it. So he is kept in. He gets out now and again to get his fix, and usually brings us a present of a corpse of some sort when he does, but normally, he is content with mousing in the house, which he is quite skilled at.
