Was just about to say Tomato juice doesn't work. Hydrogen Peroxide does. It breaks down the chemicals in the skunk smell without harming the pet and collars. The tomato juice thing doesn't seem to actually kill the smell forever.

Well, actually I find that I have grown rather resentful that we don't have them in SE England. I am really curious as to how they smell. Is it a smell like cat pee? I can't imagine a smell so powerful and pungent that it would take so much effort to remove.

Let me tell you.. when our little dog was sprayed and came into the house, the smell lingered in the house for over a week and she didn't even transfer the spray to the floor or anything. It was so insanely powerful, it almost didn't smell like skunk anymore, but it did make it very hard to breathe.

Imagine the worst human body odor you can imagine. Now, multiply it by 100. You can smell a skunk that isn't even near you.

You are making me *really* want to experience it. Once, anyway,

My dog was sprayed last night by a skunk when we were out for our run. I smell... he smells worse. I gave him a bath but that's just not enough. He spent last night out on the balcony. And my fellow employes are keeping their distance from me this morning.

Anyone know of a shampoo or product that really works to get out skunk smell?

  1. 1 quart (or liter) of 3% Hydrogen Peroxide, H2O2.
Use fresh (unopened) hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Hydrogen peroxide eventually turns into water (H2O).

  2. 1/4 cup (50 ml.) of Baking Soda
  3. 1 teaspoon (5 ml.) of Liquid Soap
  4. 1 pair of plastic or latex gloves
Nature's Miracle also makes a good solution for helping to get rid of the smell.

What Juro said...this is even what we mix up at the animal hospital I work at for stinky, skunky dogs. One important note though...you can not make this mixture ahead of time to keep on hand, you should apply it as soon as mixed together. I don't know why, probably just loses its effectiveness.

Take some really stinky green bud and magnify it to sickining levels. :) There is a reason they call it skunk-weed. Oh, wait. There is none of that naughty stuff anywhere in europe except Amsterdam. ;)

You are making me *really* want to experience it. Once, anyway,

Do not bathe for one week
Do not change your underwear or even take them off all week
Do not wear any deodorant
Run one mile every day during the hottest part of the day
At the end of the week,
Take off your underwear
Rub them all over the most sweaty crevices of your body, don't forget the armpits
Place the underwear in a sealed plastic baggy
Go take a shower...right away because your family already hates you and you have no more friends
Place the plastic baggy in a spot where it will get lots of heat and sunlight and leave it there for one week or until you see something growing inside it.
At the end of that week,
Open the baggy and hold it directly against your nose
Now inhale deeply.
When you regain conciousness you will know what skunk smell is.
You will never forget.

P.S. If you actually do this, never tell anyone.

Heh, I'll ship ya one. ;)

OR possibly, if this stuff is available in Europe, pick up a bottle of Skunk Lure, the stuff used for hunters.

I've heard they make great pets. I don't know anyone who has a skunk as a pet, but that's what I hear.

You can get them deskunked just like you do a ferret, removes the gland that ferments that wonderful smell.

Yep, they do - I had a friend how had ne as a pet. They are intelligent and curious animals, and are smarter than dogs. Their fur is really nice too. A vet can "De-Skunk" one for you, but you have to get them very young.

That takes the "Hands up, this Skunk is armed" away when you face some burglars, skunky on your arm, tail end to them...

Fart in a closed elevator the day after eating pickled eggs and drinking beer...that will give you about 1/10th of an idea of what a skunk smells like!

Only problem with skunks as pets- they're succeptable to rabies. They're quite the carriers/contractors along with racoons.
