The forums will be gone soon. In July 2004 I started a thread about this at sluniverse. Philip responded in the third post. It's been a long time coming.

I'm not the least bit bothered really. General Topics and The Sandbox have become little more than a parade ground for flag-wrapped US militarists and their Pro-Israeli handlers. Shutting down those forums will help to drive them back to the Free Republic echo chambers from whence they came. Land and Economy forum became a similar parade ground for hardball libertarian capitalists. I never even bothered to poke my head into In-world Political Science. I rather suspect that it's little more than another gutter of reactionary american bigotry. There is a posse who seem to have overtaken some the the soon-to-be-closed forums who love to dish out their hardball politix but run to the resmods when challenged. Also, I have noticed a mean-spirited streak of laissez-faire hardheartedness running through the aforementioned forums. I feel Linden Labs is wise to close them.

We're not all americans here in SL and we're not all gonna fall for the WOT BS.

this has to be the dumbest fucking thing LL has EVER done. Their reasons are rather shitty and just hint at them being lazy.

I don't have to explain and/or justify anything I say or do to you. Don't like anything I have to say? Tough.

Yes...that is the exact reason why...Islamic extremists have taken over LL (and SoL as well but that's hush-hush) and are freeing of us of the Capitalist Swill.

To lose the forums is to lose our town commons

The forums will be gone soon. In July 2004 I started a thread about this at sluniverse. Philip responded in the third post. It's been a long time coming.

I very much regret the loss of the forums. They are easy for new users to find, and they have a centrality that no private blog could possibly provide. To lose the forums as they are now is to lose our town commons. Will anything really be able to replace them?

It is true the forums have been full of flamage, pro-right-wing hogwash, and other forms of B.S. It's even true that a small number of posters do most of the posting. This doesn't mean the concept is hopelessly flawed, and it is the nature of any really public space to be this way. You just have to read with your brain still on.

I will search to find a good cheap source to set up a town commons and welcome any feedback from anyone; email me at brenda_archer_1@yahoo.com. Midbies such as myself and newbies especially welcome!

Still, anything I or anyone else can do is merely another shard of fragmentation compared to the centrality of something like The Sandbox here in the forums.

Someone will have to build a village of bridges in-world for all the displaced trolls. Truly, an in-world forum would be fun--maybe model it after the Roman Senate.

Blogs suck anyway. Who wants to wade through pages of opinionated drivel just to find that one interesting fact?

We all know what the official LL company line is already, why would we waste our time reading their propaganda blogs?

no LL just got lazy and didn't want to have to "moderate" the forums anymore and when the resmod program didn't help alieviate their "burden" they decided to close them down. Blogs are useless pieces of shit compared to forums. Don't expect to see me actually read anything posted on the LL blog.

I for one will miss the forums terribly. They were actually a place where I could chat freely with my other Second Lifers, outside of SL...In fact, I probably have more contact with friends here than I do in Second Life. :(

Will there be a replacement to the forums for me? Unlikely...it will be highly unlikely that there will be one forum that will have the traffic and amount of friendship I've experienced on the official board. Not to mention the fact that when I talk to someone on the SL board, I know I'm talking to the actual player for this SL avi.

Forums are a unique mode of communication. You have the time and thought to place into what you say. Communicating on Second Life is akin to a massive IRC chatroom...a totally different enviroment. And I will admit, I prefer the time to express my thoughts that a post allows, rather then the rushed typing of sending a line of 'spoken' message in-world.

As to flames and other ego bruising things...I think it's a terrible excuse to use for shutting down the forums. So we have immaturity, or rampant opinionism...this isn't intolerable for a lot of us. Posts can be ignored, regulated, deleted, and locked. Shutting down the forums because offlamers and trolls is like throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

I would urge Linden Labs to reconsider this move. I do not see the forums being that much of a burden, and they are a boon to many of our residents.

How does one silence those who argue successfully against ones ideals? Closing the forums is one way I can think of.

Bah, I'm just whining. I like Philip, and the moderation has been very fair. :)

Well, considering I have spent more time, a LOT more time, in the forums than I actually have in the SL world, this is a big disappointment. I've never really found anywhere in the SL world where there are a lot of people having conversations, it's usually one-liners or filled with so many abbreviations that it might as well be an IRC chat room that most of the conversations are private, and 9/10 of people's statements are "LOL" or "OMG". (now that I clicked "preview post" I see that someone else has posted virtually the same thing)

They offer no in-game tools for finding out where a lot of people are CURRENTLY, so it's just a hit and miss as far as trying to find somewhere that has a lot of people at it currently and a place that's fun to hang out based on PEOPLE (plenty of places based on cool builds)--even my favorite hangouts are a hit and miss as far as it being a time where people are discussing things. This form has been really great and it's a shame to see it go. I enjoy the discussions here, even though they sometimes get heated.

Since they're going to get rid of the forums, I hope they work with some good web developers to make looking for information on their web page a little easier--maybe offer more than just one way to get to the info one is looking for.

This forum has been more active than any forum I've ever been to. It has been fun.

Considering the abuse that LL takes here on their own forums,
I can't fault them for this decision.

I'll miss the more colorful personalities on the select forums that are going away.

But that doesn't justify keeping something with so much noise and so little signal.

Anyone else think it's pretty teling how much Philip thinks of the SL community when looking at the last time he actually logged into SL Universe?

Well, I just joined the SecondCitizen forums, and they seem to be really active. I'm very thankful.

I can't fault the Lindens either for their decision either--they have a lot more important things to focus on, and I think it will make SL a better place in the end. :)
