ATI Catalyst 7.12 - 9.3 graphics performance extremely bad

Having a new ATI card the priority of an issue SuezanneC brought up before has suddenly increased for me :). Please see /111/ec/229433/1.html for reported font rendering issues.

In fact all current viewers 1.18 - 1.23 are affected by these font rendering problems but worse, extremely bad graphics performance in general. I get about 1/3 lower FPS on a very powerful HD4870 than on my old Nvidia 8600GT. As reported all Catalyst drivers including ATI's OpenGL 2.1 implementation have these problems, including the latest 9.3 but only in Secondlife. Going back to 7.11 as many did is not an option, 48xx cards are only supported from 8.7 onwards.

There are 3 related Jira tickets for this.
http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-3947
http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-4335
http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-11874

The latter two of them are marked Critical but are still unassigned?!

If you are an ATI user, please have a look at these and vote for a fix. Lindens, please assign someone to these tickets. They are showstoppers for ATI users! Thanks.

Since updating cause I was way behind with updates for my card, I'm getting insanely weird nearly program stopping graphic glitches. My performance has been alright, but now at random I get what I can only figure are graphical explosions of polygons that explode from my character and cause my view to be obstructed. I tried both the regular SL view and the Release Candidate one with no difference between the two. It doesn't happen every time, but if it's half an hour or just 10 minutes, it'll start doing the weird graphic glitch.

Hopefully this can be fixed soon cause I can barely play right now.

@Maxon

Yes, I get the artifacts too. Thats another problem with another Jira ticket ;)
http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-3258

Try to disable VBO in Graphics / Hardware Options (lower checkbox).

There are a lot of unresolved ATI graphic issues with SL. Hope they get a higher priority to be fixed.

I made the mistake to buy an ATI card again after I had problems with a X800 card earlier that led me to buy Nvidia. If anyone asks me what card to buy for SL, there is only one answer now. And thats certainly not ATI ;)

I've had no problems with ATI for a long time now, but since the update, it's gone funky. It seems alright now turning off VOB.

I haven't tried the new 9.3 drivers yet; I'm still using the 7.11 version. I find the inability to display the main menu correctly pretty much intolerable. I've had a problem with gray textures for the longest time, during which I've used a number of post 7.11 versions of catalyst.

It would be nice to get some more votes for http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-3947 "Ugly font rendering in menu bar after upgrading to ATI drivers 7.12"

What I'm wondering is if this also happens in Vista. Seems all reports are about WinXP and Linux.

Update: No difference with Vista64. Sub par performance compared with old NVidia card.

i just installed the new 9.3 it seems very good disable to the opengl vertex buffers in hardware options, it was using the 8.7 before this cause no other drivers came close to being stable as that one till the 9.3 i get more fps and it seems rather steady, using the 4850

@JJames

That's a misperception. As I wrote earlier the performance is seriously impacted (in SL only). You may not see this if you have only one card and no chance to compare but a much older and slower NVidia 8600GT card performs about 1/3 faster in the same machine as a brand new 4870. That's not acceptable. Besides the broken font rendering since 7.12...

There is a incompatibility with ATI's OpenGL 2.1 implementation that was introduced with Catalyst 7.12 and all Secondlife releases. Nvidia's OpenGL 2.1 however works fine. The question to ask is where does this incompatibility originate from and how to fix it.

I went to the store, played all my charm and got the 4870 card exchanged to a Nvidia 260GTX 216 for a top up. Thanks god. And all is just working fine again.

I honestly do not recommend an ATI card to anyone for SL, these problems exist forever and were the reason for me to change to Nvidia before (X800 => 8600GT). I made the mistake not to check the current situation and bought ATI again but obviously nothing has improved. Luckily I could exchange the card but it came at a price. For SL there is only one choice and that is Nvidia. Period.

Sorry to jump in but I'd like to ask a question related. My graphics are having this same problem after I did something and had to reinstall the driver. Of course it installed the latest driver on the Radeon 9550 series. I did have, (I think) before everything went downhill one of the older versions of the driver catalyst 7.11.

Now going back to the website for ATI it only offers options as far back as 8.1. How can I find the older driver that I used to have? I tried google of course. Without knowing what I'm doing though, I'm afraid I won't download the right driver or download a virus.

There are a number of 3rd party websites hosting older driver versions. One is guru3d.com. A Catalyst 7.11 package is here:

I've just uploaded a test build (otherwise identical with Cool Viewer 1.22.11.0 R3) that incorporates the fixes of http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-12540. It includes updated OpenGL headers and detection routines. Hopefully this helps the ATI users out there that are suffering from bad performance of their graphic cards with SL. Please give it a try, perhaps it works for you. I can not test it myself as I returned my 4870 for a GTX260 due to the problems with SL.

So far mixed results, 100% increase in FPS for ATi but Antialiasing doesn't seem to work anymore. No impact for Nvidia cards. All working there.

I need more people testing :).
Thanks!

I'm giving R3c a try. It doesn't seem to have made a whole lot of difference so far, though I hadn't done any FPS testing previously and haven't with the test yet. I hadn't actually realized there was a problem with ATI cards and SL. I'd certainly never had one before, though after a while inworld things would occasionally start to grind to a fitful halt, which I had thought was what everyone experienced.

My previous card as an X1950 pro and it had the same problems. My upgrade to a 4850 didn't seem to help performance at all. I've always updated drivers at least once every few months.

The rest of my system is about two years old, but runs games like Fallout 3 VERY well.

I was getting those graphic glitches too, so thank you for the VBO tip. :)

Boy Lane - I just installed your R3c viewer yesterday. It's my first time trying any alternate SL Viewer and I'm very glad I did. Here's some feedback.

My machine:
AMD 9500 Quad-Core 2.20GHz
2 ATI Radeon 3870 video cards
2 widescreen LCD monitors
Catalyst 9.3
8 Gig ram
32 bit Windows Vista

I can turn anti-aliasing on for the first time in Catalyst. No more jaggies :) Otherwise everything is the same. I still can't turn on Water Reflections without lagging so bad I can't walk very well.

I have a laptop with a much lesser nvidia card and it runs SL better than my smokin' desktop. The desktop outperforms it in everything but SL. However, I can run SL on one monitor and have PhotoShop CS4 doing it's 3D painting thing on the other monitor with now obvious affects in SL. The ATI cards really only have a problem in SL.

Heads up people....there was a recent Jira posting from Zen Linden in http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-12139: "Talked to ATI. Looks like it was a problem in the driver of confusing accessing compressed textures vs. uncompressed textures and has been fixed internally by ATI, but probably will not go out by 9.3. 9.4 will most likely clear it up."

Updated to R3e, this one is now really SSE, I made a mistake earlier. Sorry :). If you could not get it running before please try this new version.

I see a report that support for older ATI cards will be reduced in Catalyst 9.3.

From: someone
ATI R300-R500 moving to legacy support status

ATI has announced that Catalyst 9.3 will be the last driver to support R300-R500 GPUs. This means that cards ranging from the Radeon 9000 series all the way up to the Radeon X1900 XTX will no longer receive monthly Catalyst driver updates, instead quarterly updates will be provided for these cards.

This move will free up resources for ATI's Catalyst driver team, as they'll no longer have to validate and test these cards with each Catalyst driver drop. Hopefully this should allow ATI to focus their resources on CrossFire profiles, driver optimizations for upcoming and current games, Windows 7 tuning, and other items (R8xx GPUs) going forward. Here's the statement from ATI:

The upcoming release of ATI Catalyst 9.3 will be the last driver to provide a monthly driver update for graphics products predating the R6xx series. What that means is all R300, R400 and R500 series products will be moved to legacy support status - meaning they will be removed from the core Catalyst update and QA testing will be reduced. Moving forward, these products will receive critical fixes if needed as well as updates on a quarterly schedule rather than the monthly schedule adhered to for current products.

Legacy support status is typically reserved for non-current products that have reached a point at which existing drivers optimize performance of the graphics product in question and further driver updates will yield little to no performance improvement. We continue to support non-current products well after drivers have reached this optimal state in order to ensure support for new applications and games.

By moving pre6xx products to legacy support status, we will be able to focus more of our software engineering resources on current and future products, operating systems and applications.

The following is a complete list of products moving to legacy support status:

Dynamic benchmarking done for the OpenGL fixed CV. For both ATI and Nvidia cards there is a measurable performance gain of 35% compared to the official viewer.

Test results (60s train ride in Koh Kut, measured with fraps):
R3: Standard Viewer, R3c OpenGL fix, SSE2, R3e, OpenGL fix, SSE, Shadow just for comparison)
ATi (HD4830, 1400x900, Thanks Trashe Vyper!)
R3) 1785 Frames, 19 min, 44 max, 29.750 Avg
R3c) 2178 Frames, 25 min, 46 max, 36.300 Avg
R3e) 2224 Frames, 21 min, 54 max, 37.067 Avg

SL 1.22) 1554 Frames, 12 min, 39 max, 25.900 Avg

Nvidia (GTX260, 1680x1050):
R3) 3924 Frames, 42 min, 86 max, 65.400 Avg
R3c) 4617 Frames, 64 min, 91 max, 76.950 Avg
R3e) 4463 Frames, 63 min, 89 max, 74.383 Avg

Shadow) 2615 Frames, 36 min, 53 max, 43.583 Avg
SL 1.22) 3436 Frames, 42 min, 85 max, 57.267 Avg

ATI just released new Catalyst 9.4 drivers. Would be great if someone could give them a try and report if they do anything to improve performance and/or fix the rendering issues. Thanks!

HD4850 with Vista64

I have an ATI HD4850 withVista64 core i7 processor and 6gb RAM.
No renderning problems found except for performances very very poor.
It was much better with an old pc (winxp+nvdia 7600).
I hope I wont be constrained to change my video card!

edit: I forgot, catalyst 9.3

I just tried the 9.4 drivers and NOW I have the corrupted graphics, the explosions and such.
Have been getting slow performance for awhile now on an ATI 4850 as opposed to my old 8800GT which had the funky black texturing thing.

With 9.3 it worked but was still slow and also could not enable the water reflections at all.

Will try the VBO thing and your viewer to see if it helps.

:)

update: I disabled VBO in the ATI CC, in my case triple buffering, no effect at all.
How ever, unchecking use openGL vertex buffers in the SL client works wonders.

I can now run in ultra with full reflections on and have no problems.
In my house I get about 25 FPS, but my house is very well decorated unlike most peoples houses for what ever reason, just the house, 155 prims and interior decorations are around 750 prims total.

Flying in a blank sky I am over 80 FPS which is what I would expect, normal seems to run about 30 to 40 which I have no problems with especially as I am running ultra with draw distance down a bit to 192 and particles to 2048.

As far as the Cool Viewer client, it seems to be a very nice client and runs very well so far, have not had time to check out the "Cool" features yet though.
