Since 1.4 is up i was in Game for about 10 to 15 minutes right after installation (and some crashes right after connecting to sim). I was flying a distance of about 200 meters and then crashed to desktop (which is buggin me since 1.3 but i am addicted to this game so i didnt payed too much attention to the crashes i already had every 10 to 15 minutes).

Since then i never was able to connect again.

I have tried every possible graphicsetting the nvidias nview lets me set. I installed latest drivers, upgraded bios etc.
All in all i spent about 6 or 7 hours tryin out all kinds of things (incl. Voodoo) to get back into the grid.
But no chance.

LINDENS!!!!! DO SOMETHING! DOWNGRADE OR FIX IT!!!!!!

dunno where ya live but summers' definately upon many of us... couldn't hurt to check your thermals... or try running with all the graphical settings off.

Also a full uninstall/reinstall generally doesn't hurt... im sure ya've tried one or two of these but sometimes its the one ya skip over that gets ya.

On PCs: Program Files\Second Life\Cache

On Macs: ~/Library/Application Support/Second Life/Cache

Deleting this directory seems to be a magic fix for many people. I've been suggesting it left and right, and you should too. :)

Just uninstalling and reinstalling SL will do the same. It's usually easier to explain to people how to do, as well.

no cache folder?!
06-17-2004 18:01
Hi,

I'm on a PC, and went to try and find/delete this cache folder. It doesn't exist. I thought it might be a hidden folder, so I adjusted folder options to view all. Still nothing.

I'll list the folders I have inside program files/second life:

app_settings
cg
character
dlls
fonts
help
trial

I've been inside all of them as well, and all of their sub folders, and still can't find a cache folder.

What's going on here?

Well i personally have spent 2 days now trying to get SL to run without random crashes to desktop i can be online for 30 seconds or 10 minutes and seems pretty random so far have tried changing all my drivers mobo and GFX card, have tried several releases of BIOS and even reformated HD and tried that approach to no end i STILL CDT max i managed to stay in game is 12 minutes.

Evrything was fine before 1.4 and 1.4.1 so i ran outta things to try now and am hoping its some client/server problem thats gonna get fixed soon.

For all thos looking for "cache" in SL folder u wont find it as it dont exist the only thing cached for SL is in the prefetch folder in windows folder. Only Mac versions have this cache directory i beleive. Sys specs for those interested are below any advice helpful as im outta ideas :(

Asus A7N8X-E-Deluxe mobo with latest BIOS and nforce drivers from nvidia (also tried Asus drivers)
AMD 2400xp "Thoroughbred" CPU
GForce 5700XT 256 meg latest drivers installed
512 DDR Sys ram
120 Gig Western digital HDD/8meg cache
Win XP with full service pack installed
Tt case with insane cooling

Must add pc runs the most graphic intense games fine like Theif3 and City of Heroes and doesnt get above 43-45degrees with the vid card staying nice and cool (also stays this cool running SL for the 10 or so minutes i canstay ingame)

on my windows xp machine the SL cache is in the following
directory:

"C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\SecondLife\cache

i have a shortcut to this directory on the start menu to ease deletion.

one might as well write an oldfashioned batch file with

del d "C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\SecondLife\cache

in it and put a shortcut to that on one's start menu.

Thanks for the replies.

Still no luck. Running XP too, so I'm surprised I couldn't find it in the folder listed above.

Did a search for 'second life' and 'cache' seperately too. Nothing turned up.

Not sure if this is the same occurance, but I get logged out of SL at random intervals. No apparant reason, just "SL has logged you out." Pffft.

My System Specs are:

AMD Athlon XP 3000+ 2.16 GHz
512 MB DDR RAM
NVidia GeForce FX 5900
Win XP Pro

I have done everything I possibly could do besides upgrading my BIOS and reformatting my HD.
I have uninstalled SL, ran anti-virus and spyware detection programs, rebooted and clean installed SL. Still the same problems. :( Hopefully they release a fix for this in 1.4.2 and soon.

Ok this is getting out of hand....I've crashed 43 times today and I cleared the "cache" and it had no effect...I've also heard of plenty of similar occurences all over SL....something needs to be done...:(

But of course, I'm sure their working their hardest to get out a update to fix this problem, I just hope it comes soon....

The 1.4.2 update should fix many of your problems.

If you get logged out of SL at random intervals, it's probably your networking. It's definitely your network if you've got a wireless LAN.

Mine still crashes very very regularly. I'm on a newer 15" powerbook g4. Tried removing the cache, no dice. It seems to happen MOSTLY when i'm building stuff. I've been experimenting with making fur out of layered prims with alpha textures on them but I keep running into that stupid alpha sort bug and I've been trying to find a visual work-around.

*sigh* I hope both of these issues get fixed soon because I have a couple of really neat projects planned! Can't build when it keeps crashing! Not only does it crash, but it takes down my entire computer, even when I have no other apps running. This is the ONLY application that I've ever seen completely take down Mac OS X in a very long time. Good luck developers. :)

Same here was hoping 1.4.2 would fix these problems but still get random CDT at anytime from 30 seconds to 30 mins of being ingame and with no seemingly common factor in them :(

Omen, the Application Data folder is a hidden folder. If you don't have your system set up to show "hidden" files and folders, you won't see it, and the search features will ignore it.

By default, Windows XP does NOT display hidden files and folders. Otherwise there'd be no point.

oh I found it, if you go into search type in cache, and then advanced, then show hidden folders...

anyone know how to take this feature off of XP?
