Login hang on wireless, "Waiting for region handshake"

Title says it all. The Login zips through very fast until it reaches about half way and gets to "Waiting for region handshake". It then hangs for a bit and drops me back to the login screen with this message:

"Unable to connect. Login packet never recived by login server.

Please try again in a few minutes, or click Help for advice and a link to the system status webpage."

I've done this more then a few times and still the same thing...help please?

I've got two computers both have the same problem and I did a route trace to find out where it was going wrong. It turned out not to be anything to do with my firewall but it was failing half-way between here and the server. I also found that my log with Peer Guardian was adding a new location on everytime I tried to connect. I disabled Peer Guardian and could get on straight away. One of the links must be a blocked link with Peer Guardian (and quite possibly other adware blockers). Try disabling these and see if you can get on.

The problem is the same problem I had at my job or so it sounds. Sounds like if you have DSL and using a router that you have the modem doing the login to your internet and not making the router do the login to the ISP. Change that and it should work fine.

Hey Dewi Cardiff,

I'm on NTL - it was peer guardian that caused the freeze at region handshake for me too, I guess it's Time Warner Telecom it's flagging.

Cheers.

Same thing happens to me but I'm not on wireless. I've tried uninstalling, rebooting and reinstalling to no avail.

I've also had the client crash on me a few times after it fails the region handshake.

Anyone able to log in or have a quick fix?

This is an old thread, but seems like many people are coming across it now as this problem has become common again.

Firstly, to correct Dartavia's comment "Being an ISP tech, i knew what you meant by "wireless"." - Dartavia had no idea what Jacob meant by wireless.

Jacob clearly stated that has LAN was wired - from the modem/router to his PC was cabled, but that his modem is a wireless modem - whatever your ISP calls it - Mobile Broadband, Unwired, Novatel Wireless, whatever. But Dartavia's comments went on to query Jacob about his Windows XP WiFi Control Panel item to "repair" (recreate - LOL!) his WiFi connection to his ADSL/Cable/satellite modem - when Jacob had made it perfectly clear he does not have a WiFi connection, nor does he have a ADSL/Cable/Satellite conenction. He has a cabled (Ethernet or USB) conenction to his Mobile Broadband modem.

Dartavia, don't say "Being an ISP tech, i knew what you meant by "wireless"." when you clearly did not, otherwise you would not have followed that statement with the next sentence "You can recreate your wireless connection from your PC to the modem." when Jacob just said he does not have "wireless from his PC to the modem".

Jacob never posted back saying whether he has a resolution or not. Has anyone else had and solved this problem? If most people having this problem have wireless connections, maybe the MTU needs to be lowered? The default MTU is 1492 - but wireless has overheads that can cause some protocols to fail, so suggest lowering MTU to 1400.

I am having the same problem - but not on wireless - I'm on ADSL2+ set to G.DMT, wondering if I need to lower my MTU too - I saw some other posts saying they're having the same problem and not on wireless...

Same here - and mind you, it is been three different connections through 3 different providers and systems (and two continents).

The supposed help button does not load anything, so there is no way in telling what might be the problem. And sorry no, I never heard the term 'recreate' in this context ever.

And additionally, this is as well a problem going through a WIRED connection.

I'm wired. 2Ghz CPU, 1 Gb Ram, fresh windows install, only firefox and SL installed. No AV, no firewall. I get Unable to connect to simulator

SOLUTION TO "Unable to connect to simulator"

Ok, most of you will be kicking yourselves for not thinking of this sooner.

We have all cleared our cash, killed our AV and firewalls. But, none of us thought to check the modems firewall. Mine was set to not respond to ping request and to hide from computers on the wan (Medium setting). i lowered the setting to low, which allows everything but known attacks, and all is working well.

Good luck and you can thank me in game if it works for you.
