well i got into the beta and its all good, downloaded the newest client the 11meg one and i couldnt play earlier because it was down, told me i have to try between 14:00-23:00 Pacific Time or something like that, so now its 4:36 Easter Time so im like hell ill give the beta a try, so its about to load right and its 5% loading and says there is some new update to download so i click ok and this so called patch or whatever just turns into some little DOS programing with the cursor going CRAZY and the printer starts just spitting out blank sheets of paper :(

something simular here
04-10-2003 14:00
hi I am having a simular situation going on. I logged on then hit the connect button and I got a message box asking if I wanted to upday. Then a DOS box pops up. Right now the cursor is just popping all over that window and nothing is realy happening. I don't think this a hacking problem but perhaps something more to do with the coding of the patch.
Please let me know if this is suppose to be doing this or if I need end the patch and just log on as usual.
Thanks :)

hmm.. well 5.2 is up today, maybe (?) thats what you got.
Login server opens at 2pm PST, sounds like you tried at 1:36 PST since Eastern time (not to be confused with Easter time) is 3 hrs later.
No clue about the printer... gremilins?

Wow. Did it really make your printer spew out sheets of paper?

The automatic updater is supposed to open a small window that displays how much of the new version has been downloaded. When it's done, it should automatically launch the installer. Since that isn't what happened to you, it sounds like we've got some bugs. :)

If possible, can those of you who are having problems with the auto updater please mail the following information to support@lindenlab.com?

Operating system.
Free space on your hard disks.
Size of your hard disks.
Amount of RAM.
The title of the mysterious DOS window that pops up, if it has one.

That would be a big help for us.

I forgot to mention before that (as a workaround) you can always download the current version from secondlife.com if the automatic downloader breaks.

This happened to me too, start, "yes" to download new version, DOS window. I closed all other applications and looked at my network status, I was downloading something very slowly, on the order of 100-50 bytes /sec.

It is not a hacked file, scan comes out clean so don't worry there.

Here is some more info about the "bug", and what it actually does. When everyone downloads the update file (thru autoupdater), and runs the update file automatically (file "7E7.exe";), it set the cursor at random locations on the DOS screen, over and over again. It is like someone forgot to end a Loop statement in the updater. Check this executable on the server or the source code of this updater for bugs.

If the server exe cleans out fine, I can send u a copy of the file that is stored in my temp folder. Too bad my hex editor does not work casue I would try and find the problem out myself between this updater file and past ones....uh u did not hear that from me. *cough* *cough* :D

well i wasnt worried if id get a virus or what cuz damn only god knows how many times i have been virused...and i mean i if i get hacked i get hacked no way to prevent and awesome hacker from doing what he wants anyways...ill just go and cry like a little girl :o

you said its in your temp file but i couldnt locate mine it kept changing names also for some reason. plus i just downloaded the 11meg client today so i was surprised that an update was up and about before i even got a chance to test this one, although since servers are down at those times they prolly working on new bugs 24/7 so it shouldnt be that much of a surprise

thanks for the help everyone

I think this was supposed to go here:

(Amazingly, Windows apparently lets you pretend that HTML is a program, and merrily tries to run it, causing all sorts of wierd behavior).

Anyway, we've fixed the typo, and are going to add some checks to the updater to make sure that this particular problem won't happen again.

If you still are having problems with the automatic update, please mail support@lindenlab.com and let us know.

A more in depth description of 'totally screwed' could be helpful. Is it on fire? Constantly spewing out pages and pages of cuss words? All the lights on it constantly blink? Is it dripping ink on the floor as we type?

:) I know its frustrating, but when trying to get help the more information you give, the more better help you will get. If that's not the case.... my car is making a funny noise, what can you do to fix it?! I've tried restarting it and filling it with gas. I even got the oil changed!

I'm not sure in what way the printer is screwed, but before you reformat your hard drive, you might try uninstalling and reinstalling your printer driver.

Just a thought,
Aaron
