I'm not thrilled with Vista either, but it is more likely your video driver. Check the make and model of your video card and see if you can get updated drivers from the manufacturer's web site.

Update your video driver, turn off all that fancy Aero stuff, give us some more computer specs so we can help a little better.

Nothing wrong with Vista here. It's prolly your video card (driver).

Instead of updating video drivers you need to use an older one.

That depends on the card...........which no one knows anything about.

Go to your control panel. Find the "Hardware and Sound" section and open your device manager. In the device manager window expand the "Display Adapter. Right click on your nVidia card that is listed and click "properties". In that window open the "Driver" tab. Your driver is listed next to "Driver Version" You'll see a number similar to:
7.15.11.6925. The most used part of that number for identifying which version you have is the last 5 digits..........which in this case is 169.25. That is the number that will tell you if you are using the most current driver available. If your number is lower than one (or more of the current drivers listed) you are not using the most currect.....if it is the same then you have the most current.

Now I will tell you that the example I gave is the driver I use on this Vista machine with my nVidia 8600GT. It works without a flaw and it is several versions older than the most current for my card. The most current driver usually is the best to use.....but that is not always the case (me, for example.......I tried the latest driver a few months ago it did not work worth a flip so I stepped back until I found the one that works). It appears that you do, in fact, need to update your driver for your problem.......so I would go ahead to do it. But, just to update your driver because the driver is newer often causes problems. If you have no problems with the driver you are using then leave it alone.

Read nVidia's tips on installing drivers on the website....it's important to install drivers correctly. Any driver for any hardware...but most especially video.

Consider switching to Linux. I routinely run SL with voice just fine in Debian. http://www.goodbye-microsoft.com/

If the problem is caused by a driver then it does not matter what OS you use.....you will have the problem. Linux (any distro), Mac, Windows or any other OS you might choose to use.

I'm aware of that. My experience over the years has been that dealing with drivers under Linux tends to be a lot easier, as it's an all-or-nothing deal. You don't get the half-assed, quasi-working situation you get with a lot of drivers when they don't install right in Windows.

One day sooner or later your XP will not do what you want or need it to do ......or you will have to replace your computer. And you will probably have to get another OS.........or deal with an unsupported system. I loved my XP.......but I've learned Vista is not bad at all. In fact once I turned off all the eye candy in Vista is really quite a bit better............and much faster.

But, now we all have to look forward to Windows 7...........due late 2009. Then we can look forward to all the "Windows 7 is crap...........I"m sticking with Vista" comments. :)

It appears the OP has got his/hers problem resolved.......so all this is moot. :)

Because I, personally, have tried Linux................I didn't like it. Simple enough. But you don't see me dissing it.

So, my question to you...........why is it necessary to taut your OS and dis mine? To each there own. Plus the problem wound up not being a Vista problem at all (as is the case in almost every thread like this).............it was a driver issue. And that driver issue would have been present with any OS (including your Linux).

Keep your Linux. I'll keep my Windows. We'll both be happy.

Hmmm I wonder if I can stretch this XP machine one more year.......

For your information, I do run Vista, as well. However, it's overwhelming problems with graphics and drivers makes it plain unsuitable for the home desktop where gaming stability is a priority. I dunno about that, the drivers for Linux have open review. Many eyeballs make bugs shallow.

Educate yourself before speaking on topics where you either are unaware of, or intentionally ignorant of, the subject at hand.

Because I don't like Linux, I'm ignorant?

Okay, if you say so.

But the issue is that a Windows Vista user was having a driver problem. It's resolved now (I assume from the last post by the OP). My suggestion helped.......your suggestion to use Linux didn't. Not everyone wants to deal with learning a new operating system. Especially one that only attracts a minute percentage of the computer users in the world today (compared to all the other OS's available). Regular, everyday, software (including games) is very limited when compared to Windows. I don't care who uses Linux. If the OS suits them I'm happy for them. However, when a Windows user asks for help the "solution" is NOT changing to Linux. Now, how about you going off and being happy with your Linux? And I'll continue to go and be happy with my Windows.

No, you could love Linux, have said the same thing, and still come off just as ignorant about Linux. You really would have to make some serious logical contortions to come to the conclusion you did.

You probably want to start a new thread instead of hijacking an existing one.

Also sounds like driver issues. Are you using the correct nVidia drivers? The latest ones aren't always the ones that work with SL in Windows. Have you tried to reproduce the bug in Linux?

Nvidia 8500 GT Drivers
10-19-2008 00:05
Hi All

I posted a thread elsewhere but have just seen this which is on the same lines.

My computer is only a month or so old and comes with Vista Home Basic and a rather basic graphics card that would not support SL. We replaced the graphics card to Nvidia 8500GT and unfortunately since then my computer has increased in its crash time.

It initially started to come up with just SL crashing stating device driver conflict but then of late has actually started to crash the entire computer.

We have tried to install updates and latest version but I was already pretty much on that, so we have had a go and installing an older version but again still crashing.

My initial thought is that either the video card was not installed correctly or we should have installed the video card and then reinstalled vista so that is recognised the video card.

Does anyone have any suggestions.

Check with you computer manual or tech support to see how to disable your onboard graphics accelerator. You generally have to do that in CMOS or BIOS by hitting a certain key durring the boot up process.

It sounds as if you have two graphics trying to do their stuff and your computer doesn't know which to use.
